Should Triumph get an actual job or stick with his lazy freelance work?

Go be a call center manager for Verizon Wireless.  I get my own office shut away from the plebes and don't have to answer phones.

Keep doing freelance video editing work.  While not nearly as lucrative, it's pretty awesome getting up at 11 to work for maybe four hours in my own house.

So, I knew volunteering for Obama would be a mistake.  Not because I haven't helped him hopefully win big in NC, but because it would involve something I'd studiously avoided since my arrival here:  interacting with the locals.

Well, one of the people I've been volunteering with is the wife of the head of the local Verizon Wireless Call Center.  These are the people you call when you have an issue with your cell phone/billing/shit like that.  The ones that don't speak with an Indian accent, anyway.  It's a pretty big employer here in Wilmington and they recently announced plans to expand by about 30% over the next year.  I've worked with this lady and her husband a little bit, he's pretty busy and can only volunteer like once a week whereas she's a bored 40 something year old woman with lots of spare time.  Anyway, they both liked me a whole lot and he basically offered me the job point blank the other day while we eating dinner at the campaign office.

I know I probably SHOULD take the job, as it would pay me more than 50k a year and have great benefits.  Plus I'd know my boss and I'm pretty comfortable with him.  HOWEVER, I really like the ability to be lazy and not have to work for a week or two if I don't want to.  Getting up at 11 and working for a couple of hours at my place is pretty much the ideal work day if you ask me.  But if I take this job I can actually buy a house finally.  Then again, if I take this job I won't be going back to school, which I had planned to do in the fall and can still do freelance video editing work while I'm in school.

WHAT DO I DO, EB?  Note that your opinions probably won't make a difference in the end, but it's fun putting the question up to you dudes.

Do what you want to do. Keep in mind that getting a job now will mean you get to keep doing what you want to do when youre older if you save up like you did for this last no-job thing.

Personally, I'd keep leeching off the hedonistic bourgeoisie.

Seriously, I'd take the job.  If you're in good with the boss, that means you probably eliminated a good portion of the stress that most people gripe about when it comes to their jobs.  Plus, you might get a little more wiggle room than others.

Just take the job and bail if you don't like it.

The job would be a means to an end. You would be doing something you don't enjoy, while sacrificing your academic aspirations simply for money. If you really don't need the money, you should go to school and do video editing on the side. Though like MAF suggested, you could do it for a short period of time, delaying your schooling for just a little while.

I feel like this is the way to go, honestly.  Looking over my books I could probably make about 30k a year doing video editing, which isn't great but for not having to deal with an actual WORKPLACE is pretty awesome, imo.  Plus it will neatly finance my schooling for a couple years, after which I will have better earning potential.  At least in theory.

But taking the job is tempting.  Getting up at 7:30 is not.

I don't see why you can work here for 12-18 months (making almost twice the wage you are used to) and then bank as much as you can.

You could leave the job with a nice little cushion of cash and then begin to do the thing you love without having to worry about slow spells or unexpected downturns.

Eh, that's partially true.  I personally feel that I've put off getting my degree for so long (10 years or so) that it's just time to suck it up and finish the last couple of years on it and be done with the whole thing.  Also, the work I do in editing is the kind where I'm rewarded by having a constant flow of repeat customers.  If I turn away from that I lose the 5 or 6 clients that are mainly keeping me afloat and there's no guarantee that they'll be there if I need them in the future.  In fact, I can probably guarantee that they wouldn't.

The most enticing part of the whole deal is the benefits, to be honest.  I need to get some dental work done and don't feel like paying thousands of dollars for it.  It would be covered after I think six months or so at the job.

Unless it pays equal to what I'm scraping by on now I'm no longer interested!  Plus I refuse to wear cravats.  Just bring Arvie down, let him breathe the sweet air of freedom and then while he's light in the head chain him up in your boiler room.  Problem solved.

Work to live, not the other way around.

Fuck it, freelance if you're happy and it keeps you in food and shelter

I went option 2.  If you enjoy the job and it pays enough that's the best option.  A high paying job that is crap is an awful option.

I think doing what Toxic Adam said would be best, that way you'd never feel trapped. Though now you seem to be living the dream (work wise).

Whenever you need money, all it takes is 15-20 more pounds, hit me up.

Duke, you're like 2.5 hours east of me. Some time in the far future we should hang out and drink ludicrous amounts of alcohol. i doubt i'll be able to drink as much as you though.

And no, that's not an invitation for bro rape.

Edit: And definitely become a corporate cocksucker for Verizon. Make a reasonable budget that you can live off of while still squirrelling money away, yet live as close as possible to your current standard of living as possible. When that gets tired, live off the budget.

You will certainly hate working at the call center, and life in general, but the money's worth it for the short term.
