Right, so I'm watching Rambo, the latest one, and it's real hot. Pure, unadulterated rage, and a proper amount of visceral violence. Fucking beautiful movie, really. Now, looking at games, right, they just can't touch this. Why in the hell is this? Even a game like COD4, which prides itself on if not realistic then at least very graphic death animations, can't compare to this. It lacks the gore, the blood and, most of all, the rage. Which makes sense as it's not about a renegade killing machine, but this is true for those games too.
So what's stopping developers from reaching this glorious level of justified violence? The ratings board? Most of these games receive "M" ratings anyway, so what's a few extra chunks and giblets, right? Audience disapproval? That doesn't sound right; people like to kill humans, gorily. So what is it? Hell, the only game in recent memory that has at least tried to provide something beyond the baseline farty violence was Killzone with its thud-gurgle knife throw, and Rambo would do that on a first date.
