Where did all the ultraviolence go?
« on: May 04, 2008, 10:34:42 PM »
Right, so I'm watching Rambo, the latest one, and it's real hot. Pure, unadulterated rage, and a proper amount of visceral violence. Fucking beautiful movie, really. Now, looking at games, right, they just can't touch this. Why in the hell is this? Even a game like COD4, which prides itself on if not realistic then at least very graphic death animations, can't compare to this. It lacks the gore, the blood and, most of all, the rage. Which makes sense as it's not about a renegade killing machine, but this is true for those games too.

So what's stopping developers from reaching this glorious level of justified violence? The ratings board? Most of these games receive "M" ratings anyway, so what's a few extra chunks and giblets, right? Audience disapproval? That doesn't sound right; people like to kill humans, gorily. So what is it? Hell, the only game in recent memory that has at least tried to provide something beyond the baseline farty violence was Killzone with its thud-gurgle knife throw, and Rambo would do that on a first date.

Halo.

It's called gibbing, like when chunks of meaty bits fly off a dude when you pulverize his body with a shotgun at close range. When Halo came out, not only did devs copy many many completely stupid things that game fucked up about the genre, but they also copied the fact that apparently, copious amounts of blood can replace gibbing. Complete bullshit, but chalk it up to the most popular shit FPS.

Well, that's true, although I'm not even seeing the copious amounts of blood these days. And the general mood in games these days, it just doesn't seem personal enough, does it? It's always about some greater purpose, a world saving campaign, as opposed to about something more tangible, like your family being kidnapped (or killed, even) by fascists or some such. Combine a deeply personal vendetta with buckets of blood and enemies being knocked out by hands and legs from their exploded buddies, right? That'd be hot.

Gears, NG2

Monsters and demons, though. While I appreciate both (the splish splash of Gears was a great experience, simply because every other developer seems mostly interested in toning the gibbing down), the whole alien/demonic aspect really cushions and dampens the impact of the violence.

Dark Messiah of Might and Magic seems pretty chunky so far (saw a dude stab a cyclops in the eye and, like, a waterfall of blood gushed out), but oh the graffix  :(

Doesn't Activision make some budget game with gore and shit? I know I played one on the 360...

SOF? That doesn't count. Well, that one doesn't count.

Raven's Soldier of Fortune was pretty gory, even by today's standards. They're working on the next Wolfenstein game, so maybe we'll see the return of gore when that hits.

I have to say, even though GTA IV isn't the most gory game in the world, a lot of the violence is effective in setting the mood. When I headshotted a guy through a windshield and saw the bloodspat for the first time, I was awestruck. Same goes for the scorching and bloodpools that form on the ground. The models, however, don't have detailed skeletal systems like those found in SoF.

seems like there are lots of human ninjas in NG2 (as opposed to the first few chapters, like in 1.)

you can't ask for much more than this:

safe to say this will be the goriest game ever, unless I'm forgetting something.

There's a game based on the Saw films coming out eventually, you gotta know that's gonna be nasty.

But there's no fleshy bits, it's just limbs flopping around. I want chunks and shards of bone and flesh to be flying everywhere. That just looks like you're cutting ragdolls filled with Kool-Aid open.

The video doesn't do it justice but there's a lot of over the top violence in Viking.

When you Izuna drop someone their lungs fly out of their chest.  Respect.

Well, have you seen the latest Rambo? That, complete with a genuinely bastard enemy to justify the violence, but in a video game.

I'm really not into ultragore.  I love Ninja Gaiden, but I think they went over the top with the sequel.

Violence isn't justifiable - but yeah, give me some giblets  :D

Something like Soldier of Fortune, but with more bits and pieces would do it for me. That, and NG2's blood would be icing on the cake.

I like Izuna dropping headless dudes in NG1.

I was just joking around with Raban, but I do need to see the newest rambo.

How about Rise of the Triad?  I remember that game having the most fucked up gibs of those early FPS games.
