Don't get me wrong, I'm actually loving GTA IV a lot. But Uncharted managed to pull me away. When it gets going, it's so much fun. The gameplay is actually really awesome I think. And there haven't been any dull parts so far. I heard it's short, but if it can keep up the action this way, then it's totally justified. I'd rather have a short, thoroughly fun game than a long one with lots of meh.

Yup! Love Portal for the same reason!

Uncharted is pure awesome so far. It outputs at 720p. It has to change resolution every time I start the game. That's one of the things that pisses me off about the PS3. It changes resolution and every time I do something.

Uncharted is a fun adventure game. Anyone familiar with The Phantom? Used to read those comics as a kid, and this felt like a homage to those types of adventure comics. Great entertainment.

yeah, it seems it relies so much on scripting now. in chase missions, even the traffic is scripted. if you replay the mission, you will see the same damn gigantic trucks blocking your way.

Has it ever been true to the sandbox principle though? Honest question, I didn't play much of Vice City or San Andreas. I remember GTA III was unparalleled in its freedom at that time, but it still felt very "set". And as I was driving around in GTA IV, I felt as if the game relied pretty heavily on artificial limitations in exploration. Which, after playing Crackdown, feels really weird.

it was scripted in the old ones, but not this badly.

Yeah, the jetski sections weren't great. The jeep section right before the first jetski romp was fucking awesome, though.

yeah, the jetski controls were terrible. but it looked gorgeous. and all the explosions in this game are shit. if you shoot the smoke plumes, sparks come off of them

It's shockingly scripted, if you die you can just learn where the enemies spawn from and where they go.

The jeep section was my favourite part too though.

I didn't mind it though. I thought it worked well for the game. And I think they did a good job offsetting the scripted feel by giving enemies and other characters more "life" to their movement. Like the pirates jumping out from behind cover in total action movie style, and dying in ways that were just as exaggerated. It was a charming game. Not the groundbreaking masterpiece certain cods would claim that it is, but an enjoyable and well made game with some old school charm.

yeah, i ultimately liked the game, although i did backlash pretty hard against it on gaf. my only REAL complaints are the lack of enemy/encounter variety, the godawful writing and facial animation, and the explosions. oh god, the explosions. on the other hand, all the environments are beautifully laid out and dropdead gorgeous, and the in-game animation was great. it was a legitimately good exercise that really only failed when it tried to be a third-rate clive cussler movie instead of a pretty pretty stop-and-popper.

I don't get where they were going with the explosions. Unrealistic is fine, but then the next stop really should be heavily stylized, in a familiar way. And in my years of reading adventure comics or watching action movies, I've never seen explosions that looked like that. Honeycombs, that's what they resembled.

the barrel explosions had this creepy pyroclastic quality, like mini-volcanos that emitted no light. the bigger explosions were crappy factor five bitmap affairs that made the pyromaniacal baby drinky crow cry.

i'd like to see some more unorthodox graphics programming approaches on the 360, ala rare, instead of the majority of devs relying on ue3 or generic directx pipeline setup and postprocessing. the one thing the ps3 has is a stable of superior devs that cut their teeth on the ps2 and know how to really approach hardware, whereas the 360 has a bunch of ex-pc devs (like valve) that let the apis limit them. if we got a bit of the naughty dog/insomniac hustle, there would be some serious sony fanboy tears.

I'm not seeing much of a leap with Gears 2 over Gears. Not that it didn't look good to begin with, but it's not exactly a second revolution coming. And I refuse to even look at promotional images of UE3 games these days; not even the PC version of Gears, running at highest quality settings, measured up to the promotional shots. Same thing with UT3, and seemingly every other UE3 powered game.

Banjo will probably be real impressive though, but Rare has in the past years failed to deliver anything that hasn't been a cluttered and largely unbalanced mess. Technological savvy in all honor, but there needs to be an artistic quality there that Rare just seems incapable of delivering.

Right now, the only developer I'm seeing that might be able to "shock and awe" on the 360 would be Lionhead. Other than that, there just doesn't seem to be enough talent available in Microsoft's by now rather barren stable.

I hope so. That's something we just haven't seen enough of this generation, presumably because developers are dazzled by the lure of delivering something excruciatingly detailed, and "real". Well, fuck "real". I think Crackdown is one of the prettiest games of this generation, and that was a distinctly stylized game. Clean, colorful, yet somehow still managed to feel tangible, and have some of the nicest looking explosions around. And I guess VP looked sort of cool, so hey, here's to hoping that Rare will actually deliver this time around.

As for Gears 2, I'm not at all saying that it looks bad, only that Epic is unlikely to push the envelope very far this time around. I expect to see a much greater leap between Uncharted and ND's next game than I expect to see between Gears 1 and 2. Which makes sense, as Epic isn't actually an exclusive developer. Not sure what that leaves Microsoft with though.

Amped 2 was the god ~~damned~~ blessed pinnacle of XBL at the time. The free ride chill out sessions were awesome. Just casually riding down the mountains in an endless "playlist", mountain after mountain. It made the whole voice chat thing an awesome experience. And then amazingly, XBL wasn't even really a part of Amped 3. I cried real tears over that.

Yeah, Evilbore gave this game way too much shit. Uncharted is what the Tomb Raider franchise should be.
