I don't think MS is done with Yahoo yet. "Walking away" is just a tactic to drive down their stock price.  I still think going after Yahoo is basically an incomprehensible mistake, but I don't think Ballmer's play is done for it yet.

I think if Microsoft is still interested, it would be via hostile takeover.

If I were a Yahoo shareholder, I'd be pretty pissed off right now, especially given Yahoo is nowhere near hitting their growth targets therefore unlikely to significantly raise share prices any time soon.

I'd definitely go for it if Microsoft started courting me directly instead.

And what better way to start a hostile takeover than to walk away and say they are no longer interested, making their stock tank?  This move could be as calculated as any other tactic.  MS was just saying a few days ago that the hostile takeover would go ahead if there was no agreement reached by Friday.  I remain unconvinced that walking away is actually walking away.
