Hip-hop officially dead and discredited

Quote
A teenage rap duo in Chicago has recorded a track, aptly called "The Economist," that extols the British publication's breadth and brevity and samples podcast commentary by correspondents Edward Lucas and Anthony Gottlieb.

"The style in which they write is simple and concise, how do they get their sentences so precise?" the rappers wonder. [UPDATE: Matt Yglesias quips, "The answer, of course, is 'heavy-handed editing' facilitated by lack of bylines."]

And the chorus is a gem, too: "He reads the Economist so he can get the gist, its solid competence gives him confidence that his intelligence is correct."

The rappers also weigh in on accusations that the Economist pushes a particular line: "Yes, they have a bias; it's pro-democratic. And pro-free trade; they are very emphatic."

Good thing I never got into rap!  I intuited its true bourgeois counter-revolutionary nature from the beginning.  Don't all the rest of you suckers feel stupid now though!

To be fair, they're from Chicago, so it could be a regional thing.

Like how Brother Ali, who grew up in northern Midwest plains states with deep progressive roots, calls himself "a mix of Howard Stern and Howard Zinn."

of all the things you choose to proclaim the death of hip hop with...well, let me give you a list of legit things to choose from: unrelenting promotion of violence, extreme misogyny, overabundance of ridiculous egos, exploitation of just about every stereotype about black men, exploitation of ghetto life, famous rappers not doing a damn thing to help out the hoods they started in, etc. etc. etc. (you could name a million.)

but OH FUCK, SOME EDUCATED KIDS FROM CHICAGO MADE UP A FUNNY RAP ABOUT THE ECONOMIST--THE SOCIALIST DREAM IS DEAD, RAP HAS JUST NOW BECOME STRICTLY FOR THE BOURGEOISIE.  Never mind that the overwhelming majority of listeners has been white suburban kids since the early 90s.

edit: jeex, finals have me pent up.  i need to go masturbate.

Depends on your definition of "complexity." In terms of substance there is tons of hip hop out there that is artistically credible. I hate when people base their negative opinions on hip hop off of what they hear on television, or some other limited venue

Madlib (in terms of production), The Roots, Common (his first album, Resurrection), Mos Def (Black on Both Sides), A Tribe Called Quest (everything), De La Soul (early stuff), Nas (Illmatic), Black Star, Blackalicious, Jurassic 5 (first two albums), and many others offer great works of substance.

And I would argue that there are many of the more street oriented, "gangsta" albums/artists which also feature substance, not glorification. Wu Tang Clan (Enter the 36 Chambers), Ice Cube (Amerikkka's Most Wanted), and even Mobb Deep (The Infamous) come to mind

:bow

it's always interested me that many of the middle/late 80s pioneers have better catalogs than many early/middle 90s artists, who often never surpassed the greatness of their first albums (Nas, Jay-Z, Biggie, Wu, etc). The exceptions being Tribe (well, they're late 80s...) and Gangstarr

what is "musically complex"?  You want some dude rapping over prog rock or beethoven?

The whole idea of hip hop is to have a solid, repetitive beat as a foundation.  Sometimes the melodies and stuff are complex, sometimes the beats are in a weird time signature, but you're not going to get some dude rhyming over contrapuntal fugues or some shit.

er, wait, what am i saying-- this is probably the most "complex" hip hop song I've heard though:

Busdriver kicks ass.
