Home security: ways to stop burglars?
« on: May 06, 2008, 08:29:54 PM »
I'm kinda paranoid lately about where I'm staying being burglarized. I'm usually here during the day, but at night I'm not around. There's nothing of real worth inside the house, except my DVD's and XBox 360, which I'm worried about. The only reason I'm worried is the garage and basement got broke into last month, and next door neighbor's house got broken into (he's never there though) recently.

There's really no way to get in through the doors because its a deadlock security door through bars, but there's a couple windows that could be broke. I'm pretty paranoid that stuff will be taken when I'm gone, I've put in a few lights, including a flood light that illuminates the entire back yard. If someone breaks in, I hope its when I'm here, because I would love to put this 15 pound crowbar through their skull.

Anyone have any ideas how to make it more safe? I was thinking of trying to find some things to block the window from being open, like putting pieces of wood in each window, or if there's a product thats available that will do it. This would keep them from just breaking part of the window and opening the lock. The glass still could be broken and get in, but I'm guessing its not going to be fun for people trying to break a bunch of glass to climb in and out that way.

Also I think leaving the lights on in the house would be a deterrant, and maybe have a radio playing or something. Also any TV stands that are made of metal or something that have a lock on them, though that might be expensive.

Any ideas? I fucking hate burglars.  :maf

A home security system?

A mean-sounding dog?

A "trespassers will be shot on sight" sign?

Did they take anything from your garage and basement before?  If there was nothing of any real value, they probably won't bother coming back.

I'm drunk. I hid my xbox 360 under the couch before i left. The house wasn't burglarized, they just took some tools from the garage and kicked in the basement doors, both were locked with just a padlock although the basement door had a deadlock too that was kicked in and broke the wooden frame. I think i'm going to get some lumber to use as a block for the windows (put them in each corner, even if they break open part of it to open the lock, the lumber budged in the corners won't let them open it, they would have to go through the glass). Also I can set the TV to go off at a certain time, so I can leave it and the lights on. I'm not sure I can do anything about the window glass itself though besides putting bars in the window. People can tell when I'm not there because of the car being there, maybe i'll get a crappy bike to chain to the canopy post to look like I'm there more often. The fake camara's sound cool too, where do i get them?
