For the GTA fan: A+- You'll like what's here if you've come to expect a lot of the idiosyncrasies of Grand Theft Auto- Floaty cars, occasionally buggy game play, bad taste.

For the newb: B-- You'll like the package, enjoy the world, but probably have trouble coping with the fact that the core gameplay is stuck back in 2001.

B+ for both single player and multiplayer. I think this is going to be the first GTA game I play to completion. Multiplayer is awesome- I'll be rocking the Ellen Page lookalike, constantly getting run over and shot at.  :-*

Singplayer - B-. Awesome world let down by shitty driving, horrible mission design and a lack of interesting side missions. No taxi/ambulance/fire truck? EPID FAIL. The story is ok but nothing ground breaking. It's a 2008 looking game with 1998 gameplay.

Multiplayer: N/A, haven't tried it yet.

What is it about the driving that sucks so badly for some of you?  Are you just holding down the R button and going wild at maximum speed?  I don't get it, the driving controls are fine.

EDIT: I'd give it a B+ right now, possibly an A, even despite its flaws.  It's the first GTA game I think I may actually FINISH; the missions haven't been frustrating, the controls have been improved, and the story is decent enough.  I find hanging out with the NPCs and such to be boring though; after you play the mini games once or twice, that's enough.  And is there even any point to dating or getting thumbs up from your buddies?

Tried multiplayer once; it was better than I expected.  The map was too large, however.

Most of us are almost done with the game, the controls are workable. But they aren't very fun and they aren't at all realistic.

B for single player at about halfway through (I think).  The problem with the steering controls isn't that they aren't realistic -- I would prefer them to be totally unrealistic and go-cart-esque as they have been in past incarnations.  It's that they're stuck somewhere in between, with realistic limitations of turning at high speeds and totally unrealistic floaty physics, and the combination is something of a disaster.  They're workable, but a serious distraction.

?? for multiplayer seeing as how I haven't tried it yet.

I'd say it's either an A- or a B+....probably B+.  I miss the overall scope of San Andreas and imo the story isn't anywhere near as good as some are making it out to be plus the controls are still pretty clunky, especially in a heavy firefight.  I don't know how many times I've died (or come close to dying) because Niko wouldn't get out of cover mode when an enemy was right next to him no matter if I pressed LB or not.  And the less said about the radio stations this time around the better.  But GTA4 is still a lot of fun in spite of all that.  Hell, that bank heist mission itself was worth the price of the game - I just wish it wasn't so scripted.....and the scripting is REALLY bad in GTA4.  It's like the Call of Duty of sandbox games.

Imo, the game has one of the most impressive lighting engines I've ever seen.  It's really amazing to watch the shadows move and change intensity throughout the day.  One of the coolest things I've seen this generation.

Quote from: Professor Prole, circa 1998
Taken altogether, Zelda: OoT is perhaps the best game released this year. Featuring unparalleled 3D environments, a deep and involved quest, brilliant and intuitive play controls, and a well-developed cinematic quality that enhances rather than overwhelms the whole game experience, Miyamoto's latest soon-to-be-classic title deserves to be played by each and every person who might deign to consider themselves a fan of great games. Forget the hype and over-the-top phraseology of the erstwhile bleeding-edge pundits; Zelda: OoT needs to be experienced in order to truly appreciate how intelligent and comprehensive a work of game design it is.

B.

Only the 3rd GTA IV expansion pak (Hopefully GTA IV: London 2010) will take what they have now for the core GTA IV game and refine it enough to be an a+ title.

I liked a bit of Zelda TOOT (great acronym, sounds like a fart) when I first got it, but once the game changed to adult Link, where people say it got GOOD, I lost interest.  Really I just like the SNES and original GB Zelda games and that's it.  Never liked the NES games much.

1998 versus 2008, go!

Quote
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is certainly not the videogame equivalent of a Hanson album or a James Cameron epic; Zelda: OoT is videogaming at its most excellent, where it stands out as a work of quality art rather than a successful demographic venture. Zelda spans mere demographics and delivers, in powerful form, an eminently playable experience that will draw the gamer, regardless of tastes, into a fully-realized world.

A-  for single player.  I can't rate it for everyone though...apparently I have super-human driving skills and a magic copy of the game that isn't glitchy.  Gets a knock for the PS3 graphics, framerate, and occasionally awkward aiming.

B+. The story is the most interesting in a GTA game and the combat is the the best its ever been, but the controls still hold the game back and the driving is frustrating. Also, having to maintain the different friend relationships gets tedious. And the missions are repetetive.

On foot controls suck and there should've been some missions with checkpoints, but overall this game has hit all the right notes for me, completely love it. I have tried to get into other 3D gta's, but this is the first one I've really loved and want to finish.

The most impressive thing for me is the level of detail in the character interactions.  Particularly on the dates, where I'm frequently engaged in conversations that are directly related to story events happening at that very moment.  Hearing other characters stances on pertinent in-game issues rather than being bombarded with generic and overly vauge responses does wonders for the storytelling.

Yeah. From hanging out with Kate and Packie you get a pretty good idea of the McGreary family and their stories. For example the stories about Francis they keep telling make you see even more what kind of petty little man he is

The character interaction is shit.

Take Dwayne. We have this guy who just got out of jail, has me shoot his partner or whoever, and when I'm on a man date, he goes on about how his dad beat him and his mom. Boo fucking hoo.

How do you care about these characters? They are one-dimensional.

They should have tightened up the story and made a bunch of these people optional. He's supposedly hunting this guy down but he's doing 2001-era hit missions for nobodies "for money" when he's got almost half a million in the bank.

They also leave the Bulgarin angle unanswered. We meet him for the last time during that Packie mission with the Diamonds, and that's it, he vanishes. He meets (and optionally kills) Darko, he kills Dimitri, but what about Bulgarin? Was he not that important after all?

Look at this horseshit:

http://www.destructoid.com/bye-bye-lead-foot-a-gta-iv-driving-guide-84579.phtml

Just look at how long the fucking guide to using the busted-ass control is.  Look at how many times the author writes "I got used to it."  Seriously, fuck this game.

If I have to fucking learn the controls to your game for an hour and "get used to it" just to be able to play it, your goddamned game is broken.

GTA in 3d has never risen above it's faulty gameplay. Always been an average game that sometimes has good parts.  The 2d ones were better just because the gameplay worked.

And don't mention Zelda in the same breath here. At least Nintendo has always done 3d gameplay at a clip above the rest.

Finished tonight, I give it a 9.75 out of 10. I have a couple of problems though that can get annoying in how you play the game technical wise and some design stuff.

Technical wise, it bothers me there is a lot of delays and babysitting for relatively meaningless things. Like if you screw up a mission and you have to start over, you might have to drive a car 5 minutes to get to the bulk of what the mission actually is. They need to implement checkpoints where you can go back to the part where you fucked up, or near it, instead of doing long ass drives. Also it gets old calling a taxi or driving to get around the city, setting a checkpoint, or so on. Yeah, its more "Realistic" that someone is in the back of the taxi, or you have to call someone first to get you to take you somewhere, but why can't you just simply goto the map, pick the point where you want to go, then you're there? Less realistic? Sure. But also much less of a pain in the ass. They need to implement better ways of traversing the map and traveling instead of constantly setting checkpoints and getting taxis or driving.

Design wise, you don't feel much connection with some of the people around you, or the city around you. Like for example, the empire state building, statue of liberty, metlife building, times square, etc, etc ... I've never even interacted with these places. The only I even came across in the game I noticed was Times Square, and that was just zooming across to get somewhere. You have all these landmarks and cool places in the games you've been showing all over previews, and they're not even interacted with. You can look at them, that's basically it. And you have to go out of your way to even look at them, you don't come across them in missions or anything. Why not design a mission where you run a turret in the middle of times square taking out a huge mob war and are shooting out the stock ticker and shit? Or chase after a guy as the New Years Ball drops or something? There's no connection the the places in this game. Same with most of the people, you tend to just do missions with them and that's it. The rest of the time you're babysitting to make sure they don't get pissed at you to get relatively worthless benefits.

Maybe too much griping for a game I thought was really good, and was hell of a lot addicted to for almost the past two weeks its been out, its minor mostly but its things that would seem to be really easy to fix in the future.

Where is "all the shit" they crammed into it? It's lacking more than GTA3 did

Just of the top of my head it's missing:

Taxi missions
Ambulance Missions
Firefighter missions
Killing Sprees

Evens:
Vigilante missions/police computer
hidden packages/tags/shitty pigeons

Everything they added made the world seem bigger but nothing was done to make the gameplay seem bigger/better
