I enjoyed Doom 3 PC but not as much on the Xbox which I played first.  Though it's not a new IP Doom IV still holds plenty of potential.  I would like to see cutscenes this time around in addition to a story device like the PDA.

Already dumbed down for consoles I see... oh well, such is life.

Well, let's be fair here. Doom is already pretty dumb.

Doom III PC was awesome for what it was. Definitely underrated, at least among the enthusiast gaming community, although I can see why younger gamers may not be into it.

I'll be interested to see what this one is like, though I may wait to upgrade before playing it, just as I did with the last Doom.

I want the gameplay from the old 2.5D Doom back.

I want the setting to match the run-and-gun gameplay of old; something along the lines of Unreal Tournament with Serious Sam - but with the scary-as-hell monsters everywhere going after me.

They should really just focus on making a royally brain-dead but intense run & gun monsterkillfest. Big demonspiders, small demonspiders, other demons, monsters, splatter, big horrifying guns, lots of death. Turn off the lights, and then unleash a horde of demons right in the player's face. They tried, and failed, to pull off the slow and steady horror style, so there's really no shame in going back to the deathhouse roots.

And ditch the whole skeleton-monster angle. Skeleton-monsters just aren't scary.

Yes - replicate the gameplay of Doom II with even Doom 3 graphics and you already have a winner. Words cannot describe the disappointment I underwent playing Doom 3, encountering at most two or three monsters at a time; even their locations became predictable and screamed of camp horror movies. (It's dark here; stupid Zombieman must be around the corner!)

Where are the rooms filled with explosive barrels, Barons of Doom, Cacodemons and Imps, or wide-open spaces with a baker's dozen of Arachnotrons and Cyberdemons chasing you down?

Painkiller didn't have that dark, satanic appeal of Doom - at least, not for me.

There just was something about going into those rooms with huge, upside-down pentagrams and embossed goat's heads, impaled bodies still convulsing and limbs hanging off meat hooks that Painkiller lacked.

Painkiller's monsters even looked a bit... goofy at times. Granted, it can be scary, but in terms of originality, the monsters in Doom are hard to beat IMO.

I still have Doom, Doom 2 and Ultimate Doom (plus their myriad expansion and mod packs) installed on my wife's notebook. It hasn't weathered that well with time, but occasionally I'll still haul her notebook into the bathroom and play a level or two while I take a dump.

Serious Sam is not scary in the slightest. It is a fun romp and adrenaline-packed run-and-gun shooting, but it lacks that "Doomness". The monsters in Serious Sam can be quite funny, actually (especially those screamers with exploding heads).

Doom II with Doom 3 graphics - can't believe there isn't a mod for that yet. I'd jump on that post-haste.

Nothing will ever top the madness and speed of Doom. I recommend Hell Revealed I and II; which are pretty much the hardest doom megawads ever made that don't feel over the top distinguished mentally-challenged. They are just a blast to play.

edit: man, i remember download doom wads on ftp.cdrom.com back in the days by connecting to a local bbs that had a gateway to the internet using a door program. It was awesome.

After my own post, I decided to do some searching: surely someone has done a Doom II mod for Doom 3, and guess what?

http://doom3.filefront.com/file/;45115

Going to download this now and see if it's any good. Even being incomplete in terms of levels and its obvious modded nature raises doubts as to the overall quality of the mod, who knows? This may just be panacea.

EDIT:
