I think I'm correct in thinking that most media folks had to actually play GTA4 with Rockstar present, which is not uncalled for big "AAA" titles to prevent folks breaking street date or copies moving hands or what have you.  But you've got to wonder by having the publisher and developer in the room with the people, if the media is susceptible to the double talk that explains away the faults of the game.  I can't really fathom how else the game got perfect scores - and I really like it.

I'd believe that.  It takes a dedicated journalist to deliver the truth above all else, regardless of whose feelings get hurt, and I can't think of a single gaming journalist.

Uh, I can.  Media is bought and paid for.

Credibility of reviews is null and void, it's kind of a sad day.

You can't buy every media outlet, but I do think that overgrown fanboys that get to work near their idols are susceptible to publisher and/or developer double talk ("This appointment system doesn't quit-"  "The key is that we're trying to cultivate relationships and push the genre into a new frontier of relationship building, which is a dynamic you haven't seen in videogames.  We're trying to elevate it to art."  "... yeah.  YEAH!  I can see that...").

I just got a vision of me playing Fable 2 with Peter Molyneux behind me.

GTAIV revealed the flaws of the gaming "media," who are an extension of each company's PR department 90% of the time, and actually reporting, providing decent criticism, and analyzing issues surrounding the industry with the leftover 10%.   maybe it's more like 95% to 5%...or less.  Sure, some easy targets get shitty reviews, some not-so-easy targets will get 7s, 8s, but could GTAIV get a 7 or 8 from any of the big sites?  I doubt it. it would probably end up in another Gerstmann gate.

Other outlets who aren't fueled by publisher dollars should take up reviews.  It's the whole problem, lets face it.  The writers for the big gaming sites and mags are gamers at heart and are trying to make a living, so they have to play by the publisher's rules to continue getting access to these companies and their games.  The A/V Club, local newspapers, Wired, and other sources should hire the better writers from these gaming sites and provide a viable alternative to the current set up.

At the end of the day though, nobody really takes gaming seriously enough to care.

at the time the 8 was EXTREMELY controversial, and was even towards the low end of review scores.

myself, I felt it was it a 7.0, but then, I had better playing conditions than he did.

I would agree with this, especially since Edge gave it a 10. NFI how that happened.

It wasnt 3 - They had to go and buy their own copy, it ended up being printed with a 6/10 (later corrected to 8/10). Vice City got an 8 and San Andreas got a 9 I think, which is probably the one you're thinking of.

You could tell that something was happening since the last 3-4 months had previews of GTA, which never happens. I cant remember any game getting consecutive previews in Edge.

It's strange though because the text actually fits any score from a 6-8.
