super mario world!
« on: May 08, 2008, 04:24:10 AM »
So I've been playing the SNES emulator a lot lately, Super Mario World especially. I forgot how awesome Bowser looked in this game until I got to him. And please tell me I'm not the only one who thinks that happy face thingy he's flying in is hilarious? It's like, "oh hey, look at me, big evil demon, SMILE!"

(I didn't beat him yet. I'm trying to get all the levels, including all the secrets and everything, first. I've got most of them. :-D)

Already done. It was one of my favorite parts of the game when I played it with my gram on her SNES back in like August of 95. (My grandfather was in the hospital for a long long time then, so I stayed with her a lot to keep her company. And we'd play the game until like 2am.) I never got all the switch palaces when I played as a kid though, and I actually have them now. :D

My favorite 2D platformer still has to be Sonic 3.

Awesome platformer.

Finished it on the first day.

Played through it again the next day to get 100%.

Played through it again the third day to see what were the least amount of levels needed to pass the game.

Several years passed.

Then I saw this:

One of the best games ever made!! Sonic 3 also kicks so much ass... nothing quite like a good 2-D platformer IMO. "Awesome" being my favorite of the Special Stages, one of the most challenging Mario levels ever. But man, fuck the Special Stage where you have to use Balloon Mario through the whole thing.

Agreed.  I find SMW the superior version of SM3.  Although SM3 gets credit for being mindblowingly big at the time, SMW does nearly everything better.

Sentimentally I much prefer SM2 to SM3 but I'm weird like that.

hey nikki I don't know if you're using a controller to play on emulators, but if you do you should download JoyToKey. It lets you map keyboard keys on your controller. You can use this to map the 'load' and 'save' keys on the buttons you don't use. Makes for very fast and easy playing without having to reach for your keyboard all the time :)

Choosing between Super Mario World and Mario Bros. 3 is like choosing between which of my children to kill.

Both are fucking amazing, and I have days where I prefer one over the other, but both games are the definition of platforming perfection.

No, the definition of platform perfection is SMW sequel, Yoshi's Island.  It destroys SMW as much as SMW destroys SM3, if not more.

I really like SM3, but I like SMW more. Probably because I have all these great memories of playing it with my gram, and I didn't have SM3 for a while after that. Plus, Yoshi rules.

Blasphemer!

YI is a brilliant game. Never felt like it belonged in the SMB series, though.  Mechanics are pretty different throughout, Mario's not the main character, and crying baby mario makes baby jesus cry.  It's different and awesome enough to warrant being it's own series.

That's the most rational argument I've heard against Yoshi's Island, for that I give you credit.

Mostly it's "I can't stand Baby Mario crying so sucky game is sucky."

It's definitely not a 'Mario' game I'll give you that.  But I merely called it platform perfection, regardless of the series which it most definitely belongs to.

If you look at the US box though, it's definitely more Yoshi's Island as opposed to Super Mario World 2, which is the headline it carries.

Super Mario World is the best Mario game in the series.

Yeah, that includes Yoshi's Island.  The level design and difficulty are nice but I hate its artistic direction, which got old after a while.

YI was probably labelled SMW2 for marketing purposes.

Awesome thread, Nikki! Super Mario World is my favorite platformer. I don't think I've played any game more than this.

I never do Star Road, then you end up with the distinguished mentally-challenged "human" koopas and shit and that's gay.

:lol I thought I was the only one that did this. Though I do go all the way to Funky but then just purposely kill myself so the transformation wouldn't occur.

Yep, it was. I believe it's simply called Yoshi's Island or something in Japan.

I can concede that YI probably had the best level design in the series (whether you want to consider YI a 'true' Mario game or not), but it didn't feel like a Mario game, and I just had way more enjoyment playing SMW.

I didn't know about those special levels until I watched that speed demon thing.

You reach them from the middle of Star Road, and they look like this:

And it makes all the levels on the world map look liike this:

Except Chocolate World, which looks green.

And it makes the enemies different:

So I think I'm going to do those special worlds, at least until the Funky one like Oblivion said, last so I don't have to see too many of those weirdo enemies.

I remember playing this game and finishing the star road.  I was so proud of my save file where I'd finished every level.  Then my little brother invited a really bratty friend over and he deleted my save file just to annoy me.  I seriously wanted to beat the crap out of that little jerk.

When I was around 9 or 10 years old, we got our NES.  My older brother liked Final Fantasy, but it was a bit too much for me.  I had no idea that saving the game would overwrite a previous save file.  So my brother gets to the end of the game.  I decide to try it out the next day.  I saved at the inn in the very first town.  My brother comes home and I hear "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH  :maf :maf :maf :maf" from the basement.  He was all pissed and told me not to save.  So he starts over, gets halfway through, and I did it again, not thinking about it.  He never touched the game again.   :lol

 :o :o :o :o :o :o :o

Those levels were pretty fun to play, although one or two were a little frustrating as a kid.  I just loved how the game had so many secrets, though...secret levels on the map from alternate exits, star road, and then special levels.  AND FUCK YOU DEMI, changing the visuals was cool as hell back then!

If you leave Mario on the special level map screen for a while (at least a few minutes), it will start playing a remix of the original SMB theme.   :)

My copy of SMW had a glitch that I've never heard of, not that I researched it a lot online.

But I could only get 94 of the 96 worlds to appear.  I'm absolutely positive I know all the secret exits and got all the paths on Star Road open, but over the countless times I played that game through that's all I ever saw on my copy.  I even borrowed a friend's copy and completed all 96 worlds/exits just to make sure.  Not sure what was up with my copy.

I think I played SMW way too much to the point that I have actually gotten sick of it. :( I still enjoy a good game of SMB3, though. I also think SMB2 (SMB USA) is a tad underrated. Come to think of it, if I were to make analogies to the 3D titles:

SMB1 :: Super Mario 64
SMB2 :: Super Mario Sunshine
SMB3 :: Super Mario Galaxy

The next 3D Mario game will probably be comparable to Super Mario World in terms of scope and design. :)

It's kinda scary how accurate that is, actually. :lol

If the next Mario is indeed like SMW it's gonna be fricken amazing. Though it's gonna be tough topping Galaxy.
