Mass Effect was incredible
« on: May 08, 2008, 11:53:23 PM »
So I just finished this shit today and am completely blown away by every facet of it.  The plot is easily one of the best videogame plots I've ever experienced.  I feel emotionally attached to the characters.  It was so epic and grande in scale.  Maybe that's because I prefer epic plots like this (trying to save the galaxy / world) over smaller ones but even so, it was so expertly crafted... like a Hollywood movie.  The dialog was incredible.  They've gotta have tens of thousands of lines in the game... the ability to be a male or female meaning they had to record the entire game in both vocals, plus all the different characters and dialog choices.  This is unprecedented stuff.

The gameplay itself was a lot better than expected.  The combat felt really satisfying, both the gunplay and biotics.  I made a Vanguard who specialized in pistols, shotguns and had very high biotic skills (lift, warp, throw) and also totally maxed charm (Paragon).

The last few hours were insane.  The ending was awesome and I can't wait for the sequel.  Yes, the game has a lot of technical issues but unless you're really anal about that stuff it's not a big deal.  I didn't even care because I was enveloped in the atmosphere of the game.  Overall, though, the visuals look awesome.  The textures are some of the best we've seen this gen... amazing texture work.  The art and environments look great as well.  The Citadel and many other areas are stunning.  Character models are awesome.

FYI, according to an interview with one of the lead devs, you should keep your save file because it's going to carry over to the sequel and have lots of ramifications to the plot.

Ending spoilers, don't read:

I'm keeping two files, one where I save the council and one where I don't.

It's a good game but it really needed better sidequests and more polish.

the sidequests planets are just barren wastelands with a small shitty building filled with boxes, SMH.

Despite all the bitching I"ve heard about ME, I'm sure it's at least a 7.5 to 8.0.  I'll be picking up the superior PC version on day 1.

Agreed, the side quests seems to be the biggest complaint.  With that said, my save file ended up being 25 hours and I only did like 2 or 3 side quests, so the game was still a really good length... especially compared to most next-gen games these days which seem to be short as hell.

Usually the first game in a series is always the shortest because they gotta deal with all the engine creation and optimization but with sequels they have all that engine stuff taken care of and can concentrate on content.  I imagine ME2 is gonna be monstrous.

i did most of the sidequests, the conversation and choices you get to make is pretty neat, it's just the goddamn barren planets.

maybe EA can help them with ME2, really need proper optimization, i didn't mind the tearing and slowdown but texture pop-in really pissed me off in cutscenes.

Select it, then go to "view friends' and you can see all EBers who added it to their friend list.

That way you can get a few dozen EBers without it taking up a huge chunk of your buddy list.

Mass Effect was my GOTY last year. Totally fucking amazing game. The ending was sorta lackluster, however.

I just loved that the game made you make tough tactical decisions that affected the plot. I sat at some dialogue choices for up to ten minutes, trying to make the right decision.

You even got to dictate who lives or dies. Whoa

Plus the gay/interracial relationship story arcs as well as other game choices that really pushed some social issues. Great stuff.

Oh yeah, and the fact the game looks FUCKING AMAZING. HOLY SHIT. The grain filter was fucking kickass as well.

shitty begining, shitty ai, useless stores

but godamn it gets so good at virimire. Love the ending (Though the last boss was pointless, would have loved to have ended the game before that with the cutscene)

Then he should've just reprimanded that poster instead of killing the whole thread.  That was really lame.

The whole thread was devolving into GAF bashing - that's not what this forum is about.  We're not too strict about stuff, but I don't like it to become a bitchfest about another gaming forum altogether.  You want to make fun of the Year of PS3, by all means, go ahead.  I don't think anyone will confuse this place with the SDF, but just keep it to that - please.

I liked Mass Effect, but I felt like the plot was pretty well worn territory. Also, the gameplay was just a means to join together cut scenes. It was my GOTY, but I have a lot of awful things to say about.

Mass Effect was probably my second favorite game of last year. I've beat it twice and am close to beating it a third time, putting in well over 100 hours. I agree with GilloD that the story is pretty conventional, but the world that they crafted is so well thought out and fully realized that I could not help but to be sucked in. The DLC was probably one of the best so far this gen and I hope that they continue to put those out a few times a year with the same scope and gameplay length.

I'm big on sci-fi and this game pushed so many of my geek buttons. So many times it felt like pure geeking out. Deciding wether that queen lives or dies, when you're in the citadel looking out into space and seeing all the traffic with the synth music. The way they directed the conversations was one of the best thing. I also liked how I was able to make a really pretty character, nice to look at.

Yep, there were definately some stuff in the plot that felt too familiar with the reapers. I do have a bad taste in my mounth from the last vehicle run to the citadel which I kept fucking up  causing me to see that epic cutscene where the reaper comes crashing in on the citadel over and over. Didn't like the final boss fight either which I had to meticulously grind and exploit my way through for tens of minutes. Jesus christ, that guy had so much health and was so fast. Kind of taints the experience.

They need some gameplay fixes, like everywhere. And how bout dialogue trees that match what is said in text AND context, oh the list goes on, but everyone gets all bonerfied by music and visuals lulz
