I'm still wrangling the D90's excellent night shooting, but this a killer shot given the absolute lack of light (Except from the lantern) and a lack of any kind of tripod or stablizing device:

I like the setting sun, because it's just pretty.

And I like the next pic, which has a interesting composition. I also felt the need to outline some of the lines   :dur

(Image removed from quote.)

Id go out to make pictures if It wasnt always raining when I wasnt working.

Thanks man! And yeah, that's what hit me about the scene (the lines). I love images of 2D planes that are square with the frame. Just a lot of lines and geometry that flows the image.

Here are three new ones from yesterday

Is that a 1.4 or 1.8?  How close can you get with it?  I don't have a 50mm prime but I've often thought about picking up one of the cheap but awesome Canon ones.

Its the 1.4 version

I can get fairly close but to be exact its 1.5 Feet. Though I often feel the need to get even closer than this lens allows... which is why I'm considering the Zeiss 50/2 Makro (allows for 1:2 Magnification, where the Canon 50/1.4 allows 1:8 I believe).

The 50/1.8 is supposed to be damn good for the price. The only supposed downsides are build quality and only have 5 Aperture blades.

I didn't know the 1.8 has fewer aperture blades - I'll check it out as smooth bokeh is a big plus.  I'll also have a look at the Zeiss.  Thanks a lot for that info.

I used to have a fast 50mm prime on a Nikon film camera, but the fastest I have for the 350D is an f4.  I've got more used to it over time but it can be extremely limiting.  And now that I think of it, if I remember right compared to a film camera the 350D needs to be opened wider (eg use f8 on the 350 on a sunny day instead of f16 or something like that) so that probably makes it even worse.  Dunno if that's a function of the cropped sensor or what, I never investigated it much.

The images produced by the Zeiss are amazing but it is an expensive lens ($1000). Tamron makes an amazing 90mm Macro lens )one of the best) for $400. I just personally have this thing for how Zeiss renders an image (Neutral to Cool colors, very contrasty, bokeh is defined a bit... which gives it a unique look). I think I've been afflicted with whatever a photographer is if he were an audiophile in this field.

Same pic with the I DISCOVERED FILTERS feature:

This one is okay, but I feel like it's a bad version of a better picture:

This one could use some work to improve the concept:

I love this one, not sure why. I've cropped it 800 different ways, I can't tell what the real picture is:

Maybe?:

Bought some Christmas gifts from this guy:

My friend eating a live octopus. I pushed the colors too hard here:

Bad version of a good picture:

Plenty more later. I have like 200 at home I need so sort through. These are kind of old,  I've really gotten better!

Experimenting with 3D! Here's a preliminary shot...

Original Link (since Evilbore makes you scroll horizontally): http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4033/4291667689_9ec3e51530_o.jpg

Its a simple two plane 3D effect but I've really enjoyed some of the other test shots I've taken (where more interesting layering). I'll definitely be playing with this more (its so, soooo simple and only requires you to take another off center image (off from the first)).

Here's a link to my Flickr page with some more info:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/bluetsunami/4291667689/

Here's a link to the article I used to create the image: http://www.neilcreek.com/blog/2008/03/21/how-to-take-3d-photos/

On the setup, I just used my water ornament and a simple grass image as a backdrop on my LCD monitor.

Nope, that's actually the basement to my apartment (that's all stuff that the landlord stores there). There's was something about the lighting and the clutter that had caught my eye at the time.

Do you think the first one is HDR? I'm pretty sure he didnt take it but this guy who was climbing Mount Kinambalu with him.

It does have that HDR look but it could just be that the lighting is diffused or something (overcast weather?). There seems to be a lack of darker shadows.

Here's some new stuff from my new lens...

I posted it in the WDYB thread but here's the lens I got...

Its a Super Takumar 135 f/3.5, got it for $50 (was made in the 1960's)

I updated with the Buddha photographs on my Facebook but I figured I'd throw them here too (this is a copy paste from my post in the GAF Q2 Photo thread)...

There's a large Jade Budda (made of pure jade, a subset that is translucent and found in Canada which they have dubbed "Polar Pride"). It weighs in at 4 Tons and is 8 feet high (valued at 4 Million dollars).

Here's a link to the fact sheet on the Buddha Statue:
http://www.jadebuddha.org.au/docs/jade-buddha-fact-sheet.pdf

And here's a link to the webpage (where you can see the tour dates):
http://www.jadebuddha.org.au/en/

Two photographs of it...

And here are some photographs I took at a local cemetery after I visited the Buddha statue...

Kind of my first try to shoot this kind of stuff, all taken with Sony's 55-200 on a K-M Dynax 7D. Taken at ISO800 to get decent speeds, which is a bit much for this old sensor/processor so there is a lot of noise :/

I also have dust on my sensor but have never cleaned it (for the 3 years that I've owned it). Cleaning it depends on the camera though. I have a DSLR so its as simple as taking off the lens, having the camera move the shutter open and blowing out (with air, not compressed air, there's actually a product that looks like a fat turkey baster thats sole purpose is to blow dust off the sensor glass) the dust. If its not coming off there are wet methods and other products to clean it. There's also sending it to Canon (or Nikon, Pentax etc) so they can clean it but that cost money.

As far as Point and Shoots and larger cameras without removable lenses, I'm not sure. Since the sensor and sensor glass aren't easily accessible, I'm thinking it needs to be sent in to the manufacture for cleaning.

Just a note, Sensor dust is usually seen due to stopping down a lens beyond a certain point where sensor dust become illuminated (I believe is the case). In regards to my DSLR, sensor dust really isn't apparent until I stop my lens down to f/11 which is an aperture I rarely shoot at (even with landscapes. Since I own a APS-C camera, I get enough Depth of Field at f/8). The more you close down the aperture (f/16, f22 and beyond) the more apparent the sensor dust becomes.

I bought a Copper Hill cleaning kit a few years ago and it works really well on SLRs.  I don't think compacts can really be cleaned though.

http://www.copperhillimages.com/
http://www.copperhillimages.com/shopping/pgm-more_information.php?id=3&=SID#MOREINFO

A little bulb blower gets some of the dust but then there's a lot of stuff that won't move.  The wet swabbing method does the trick.

To see how my cleaning is going I close the aperture as much as possible (say f22) and take a normally exposed picture of a clear blue sky or a white computer screen.  This will show the bigger dust spots but if you apply Auto Levels in photoshop and haven't cleaned the sensor it'll probably look like a dust storm came through.  It's usually pretty shocking. :lol

Thats one of my favs too. Right when I reviewed the shot after I had taken it there was something about it (even in color). There's a lushness to the photo that seems to be attainable under specific lighting and other circumstances.

And my setup is pretty low end for whats out now. In that particular shot all I had used was a Rebel XT (that should go for around $300 used), a Zeiss 50/1.7 (got that for $160) and my newly acquired set of tubes ($10).

Thats actually an interesting point about the "film" look from a lens. There's definitely something about this particular Zeiss and the way it handles tones and contrast in general. I've also felt this from my Nikkor 28/2, an example...

For lack of a better word the contrast and tones feel a bit "organic". I've also read that certain lenses tend to fare better at representing curved shapes and said lenses tend to provide that "organic" feel. Just another one of the myriad of characteristics one can see in a lens I guess.

Anyway, I don't want to spam the thread, but I've been posting a lot of my photos from around NYC here:

Lovely work in there, Jiji. Shooting wide in a major metropolitan area seems like it would provide an infinite amount of subjects when you consider the various lighting throughout the day and various scenarios and places and people. I really have to go out one nice day and shoot and do some street photography.
