Basically a rip of the GAF thread but its all good. This thread will probably get few replies though but I would like to get a little momentum going on Evilbore when it comes to Photography  :-*

Here are a couple I took yesterday...

Those are the product of me trying to mess with a White Screen (which stems from me failing at making a Lightbox). Ultimately I want to try and make a large Lightbox. Big enough that I can stuff my 4 day old niece into and take some professional looking pictures. This will require 2 500w worklights :lol.

Would be cute to get a blue backdrop and dab white paint with a sponge on it to give it a puffy cloud look. Get all creative like that.

some oldies i took.  the camera is a canon rebel XT DSLR -- some of the shots were taken with a 50mm lens.  the rest, the stock lens that came with the camera.

And nice shot CG. Branch patterns when underexposed like that usually look cool.

Currently just the stock and the Canon 50mm f/1.4 Prime Lens (which is what I used to take the Hulk shots).

Ok, since the rest of you are going to be all artsy fartsy B/W emo, I won't post my artsy fartsy bloodstained stuff, and instead stick with the family friendly, proper stuff. These are also the only "natural" shots I could find, meaning they haven't been retouched/retooled to hell and back like every other photo I take. Professional habit, eh.

This is all from a trip back home two years ago

What's a good camera?

I've always favored Nikon cameras, but I think any known brand is going to give you what you need these days. It's all in the lens, anyway. Tamron  :heartbeat

Lightbox v1.0 created!

Messed up the White Balance on the above shot. I also think the lamp wasn't positioned correctly (adjusted said lamp in next pictures)

Came out better. The lightbox is very small so I had to make the shot real tight (need to create a larger lightbox)

Love this shot. If anything, the controled lighting in the lightbox allows you to get really detailed shots which is why its perfect for Macro Photography. All these shots were handheld @ iso100 too, the power of 1.4 Aperture baby! :D

Heres the ghetto box...

Very nice. I had to build a makeshift lightbox for some product shots for the shop a while ago, and while it was a pain in the ass to get it to work for all objects, the results made it worthwhile.

Yup, fast film + fast lens. I was using 1600 and an f/1.4, though I'm not sure if I shot that first picture wide open.

I took those in Manhattan when I was visiting my GF. I don't think night scenes here in Yootah would be as interesting, unless we some rain or a nice misty night like that. :hyper

Right now I'm using a DSLR camera (Canon 350D). Its one of the least expensive Canon DSLRs but the shots you can take with it are fantastic (I also got a different lens on it, Canon 50mm f/1.4 Prime lens).

When it comes to taking picture, be it some $4,000 Behemoth or any lower end camera, you definitely want to use optimal lighting. Flash should be a "No no" unless you absolutely have too (using direct Flash makes the lighting harsh in pictures, which is why natural lighting is prefered).

Try it out. If your ever at some outing (say a cookout), take some pictures when the sun is setting. Thats generally when the suns light is much softer. You can get some phenomenal shots at that time.

Then theres composition! Won't go deep into it but I generally use the "Rule of Thirds" which is essentially you placing your subject off center. When you place your subject off center, it generally makes the picture more intersting. Also, if your subject is looking left or right, try and move the camera so that you not only pick up the subject but the general direction their looking etc etc.

Two days ago I realized there was a rose bush in front of my apartment, shots ensued! This is using morning lighting.

These are some shots I took at The Hull in Massachusetts. The Hull is literally the point on the end of the little curvature coast side. Its a very pretty place and with very expensive houses :lol

Testing out angles. I really need to work on lighting. Camera flashes seem to be waaayyyy to harsh. Natural lighting is nice, but w/ out it you have to dink around w/ lights around the area or use a nasty harsh flash. :(

any suggestions on lighting/flash/etc?

What camera are you using? The white balance is off in those, and the shutter speed seems too long. You probably need a lens with a bigger aperture

I'm using a simple Canon Powershot S400. I didn't have much for $$ to get much more than this, but it does take decent pictures for what it is. I was just curious w/ what I have, if there is a way help adjust a few of these things.

Indoor lighting (as in Lamps) aren't really good at helping the camera. With that Powershot, you'll probably need bright indoor lighting or a nice bit of sunlight on your subject. Even my XT with 1.4 Aperture Lens (ie can shoot at low light) would probably have trouble in the lighting you seem to be shooting in.

The Blurriness that seems to be in the pictures is due to camera shake from your hands (which is due to low lighting which causes the camera to shoot at a longer exposure which causes said camera shake). Also, look at what ISO your shooting at (if your able to on that camera). The higher the ISO the more "noise" you'll see in the picture (this is if you want that super clean looking picture).

The reason for the noise is due to the CCD (chip that takes in the light and gives you your picture). The higher the ISO the more of the CCD is used and the hotter it gets (causing the artifacts or noise).

I tried to get fireworks shots tonight, but between Bellevue being covered in trees, the thousands of people there, and me not having a tripod, and being unexperienced with photographing fireworks (metering does not apply, basically!), I don't think anything came out well.  I think I got some good shots at dusk, though.

I hate Bellevue, filled with white people with asian girlfriends, and the rich bastard children of other rich bastards.  Most of them are asian, too.

I think I may have gotten some more HDR photo material, though, which would be nice.  I was using 1/30 sec shutter speed in a crowd of people though, so who knows.

I haven't looked at them yet but I also took some Fireworks shots (handheld this time, last year I used a Tripod). I was also shooting at around 1/30. Try to get a good shot of some fireworks feels like a magical technique or something. It seems like you need to time around after the blast, lest your picture of it will be overexposed where it exploded. Also, longer exposures tend to give you that dramatic trail effect from the rockets where a quicker exposure won't look as nice.

Well, I kind of gave up after I realized that I had picked an absolute shit spot when they began.  I moved around and took other pics and stuff, but being in a gigantic crowd of people really pisses me off and puts me on edge, so I probably had some camera shake going on.  I also wasn't sure what ISO to be shooting at.  I think I used 800 most of the night.  800 is still pretty good for the 40D.

It looks like the HDR photo might not work.  There was a bit of movement between frames, most notably from this incredibly ugly woman.  I'm going to see if I can't work around her, but doing that sort of thing isn't really my forte.

I was shooting at ISO400 on my XT. Higher ISOs tend to make the lit up sky look kind of bad.

Also, have you tried you hand at stitching, TVC? I was recently messing around with PTGui and it freakin rocks.
