That would have been true for the earliest footage, but I don't agree at this point. The recent footage has shown pretty good texture work. Not perfect, but miles better than what they showed at E3 2007, especially when you consider how close the perspective takes you to the texture surfaces.

Not that it'd really matter; the game is a wonder of atmosphere and grit, and only a complete idiot (or someone unbalanced tool) would criticize its audiovisual presentation. Gears 2 is quite pretty too, albeit in a different way.

This game looks the be the culmination of some of the sharpest guys in the buisiness. They know their shit, bigtime.

The depth of feild look amazzing. I dont know what they did to get it to look this good and run this smooth, but keep everything as is. I would take a 640p Gears 2 to play a game that looks this great.

probably because of the models but the scale, lighting and textures is omg, and all at a smooth framerate.

After Gears I was thinking of this scene where you'd be riding through this environment and you'd have Brumack(s) running along, which you'd have to take down.

The lighting looks leaps and bounds better than Gears 1. I like how the sparks from the chainsaw battle are casting shadows on the characters.

I cannot wait for this game to be released. Video looked awesome...just home the mp is better this time around. I couldn't get into the multiplayer at all in Gears.

This looks like the game I wanted the first Gears to be. I never finished the first game. I played a little co-op with a friend and enjoyed that, but the janky AI of your partner was frustrating in single player. If they've fixed that, and the "sticky cover" system, then I'll certainly check this out.

I don't see too much of a difference based on the video, just looks like the original with more - higher framerate, more onscreen enemies, etc. And it still has that kind of low-contrast graphic style that was in the first game. Not that that's a problem for me, I enjoyed the first game for what it's worth (though I'd hardly call it a "10/10") and would definitely play a sequel, especially if they fix the first game's niggling flaws.

In doors and in the caves (the best looking parts of Gears 1 imo) it's going to look even better.
They're showing Gears 2 in an environment and lighting conditions that are not its strength (open, bright daylight) and it looks damn good.

The GI article talked how a lot of the game will take place underground as you'll be taking it to the locust. You can do some crazy shit with that.

I was actually really impressed with this footage, knowing it's of the actual game. I can only hope that the rest of the levels have this amount of scripting detail and such. I honestly didn't expect to see gameplay like this in this hardware gen.

I just started playing Gears SP again and damn, it's still so good looking. Hosted a co-op game and wihin half a minute someone joined and we were playing. I wish Halo 3 had co-op matchmaking, it's so hard and rare to get a co-op session going in that game. If it had that, I'd be playing more Halo co-op than MP.
Still plays very smooth. Favourite weapon is the shotgun, shooting it from the hip and blindfiring is great to master. Also has the coolest 'perfect' reload animation.
