Know Your 2008 Candidates: Post-Election 2006 Edition
« on: November 09, 2006, 03:09:58 PM »
The 2006 election is over.  I did one of these early in the year(at gaf lol) but a lot has happened since then. Here is a list of the major candidates who have either declared they will run or have officially gone on record saying they might run. Their political stance is taken from ontheissues which is a site that compiles how people cast votes in congress, bills they sign..etc to show their political stance.

I removed some since about 8 months ago. Such as Mark Warner(ended his run), George Allen(lost the senate), John Kerry(botched joke led to him likely not running and just run for senate) and so on. I also added some such as Obama who has gone on record saying he will consider running in 2008 as of a few weeks ago on Meet The Press(and is nearly ahead of Hillary in the polls already). I rank major and minor based on how they do in various 2008 primary polls that have been going on for the last year or so.

Democrats:

Major Candidates:
Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York
Moderate Liberal

Senator Barack Obama of Illinois
Populist-Leaning Liberal

Former Senator John Edwards of North Carolina
Populist-Leaning Liberal

Minor Candidates
Senator Joe Biden of Delaware
Populist-Leaning Liberal

Former Governor Tom Vilsack of Iowa
Moderate Populist Conservative

Senator/Former Governer Evan Bayh of Indiana
Moderate Liberal Populist

Retired General Wesley Clark of Arkansas
Populist-Leaning Liberal

Senator Russ Feingold of Wisconsin
Populist-Leaning Liberal

Governor Bill Richardson of New Mexico
Moderate Liberal Populist

Senator Chris Dodd of Connecticut
Libertarian-Leaning Liberal

Republicans:

Major Candidates:
Senator John McCain of Arizona
Moderate Conservative

Former Governor Mitt Romney of Massachusetts
Moderate Populist Conservative

Former Mayor Rudy Giuliani of New York City
Liberal-Leaning Moderate

Minor Candidates:
Senator Sam Brownback of Kansas
Libertarian-Leaning Conservative

Former Senator Bill Frist of Tennessee
Libertarian-Leaning Conservative

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich of Georgia
Moderate Conservative

Senator Chuck Hagel of Nebraska
Libertarian-Leaning Conservative

Former Governor Mike Huckabee of Arkansas
Centrist

Former Governor George Pataki of New York
Moderate Populist Conservative

Obama won't run, because he's not stupid.  Hilary won't run, because she doesn't really want to and the Democrats will cut her a deal.  And John Edwards bombed last time for the same reasons as Obama.

None of them are major players.

They have all said they are "considering" running and polls currently show them leading. That's why they are in there. The day after the 2006 elections Obama sent out a letter to supporters more or less saying "get ready, I'm going to need all the support I can get."

For NOW they are running and are leading polls. Will they in the future? Who knows. When I do another one of these in 4-5 months will see. But this is major players as of Nov. 2006, not 2007. ;)

Why is everyone acting  like these views and rankings are my personal statements?  :lol I grouped them by polling and put their "stances" based on how their various votes add up to be on ontheissues2000.org!

If I were to predict today it would be hmm.... Evan Bayh(MAYBE Edwards) vs. Mitt Romeny

FUCK YOU CHEEBs
:( I dont think Obama or Hillary will get nominated.  :-*

Evan Bayh gives me the vibe of winning this thing now that Warner is out of the way. Indiana is a red state yet he was gov. and a senator and due to his strong campaigning this year he got the state legislator there to turn democrat and got a lot of democrats elected in the house.

For the record, Fiengold should be classified as Liberaly-Liberal Wacky Liberal

Smart guy, and I agree with him on many issues (except impeachment), but he has no chance in hell of winning or getting out of the primaries. I don't think he'll run either.

And it saddens me that Wes Clark has fallen off the map or something, because I don't remember the last time I saw him. He'd be a great VP candidate for someone young/inexperienced like Edwards or Obama. He would also be a very good choice as a cabinet member, like Sec of Defense or something

Wes Clark will probably be Sec. of Defense if Hillary wins as president. Clark and the Clintons are buddies.

2000 taught me that money trumps all.

Hillary is a fundraising BEAST. She already has 50 million in the bank and NY/California LOVE her. Done deal.

I mean, you might see Bayh/Feingold make a Dean-type run in the primaries, but that will be it.

--- ---

Every Republican I have backed (Buchanan, Bradley, McCain) has not won the nomination. So I won't even venture a guess. It's hard to tell with this 2006 debacle which direction the party will go.

I'm hoping that Pataki wins ... but it will probably be some tool like Frist.

Frist? Maybe if the GOP held onto the senate. 2006 was a kick in the balls to the GOP and they'll be desperate to win I think. Not desperate enough to nominate a Democrat[Guilliani] though, but desperate.

Democrats might be a bit more cocky in who the pick coming off their 2006 sweep.

Money doesn't buy you true respect from the American voter though. Hillary doesn't have that, at least not in any high numbers. People don't like her, and they don't like her speaking style.

Harpers predicted as of last week that the senate and the house would remain under the GOP because they had more money.

Oops?

Oops?

EXACTLY. Money doesn't buy you the American people's trust. The republican's didn't have that this year, and I doubt Hillary will have it.

We must remember that a Hillary nomination would unify the Republican party in a way not seen since 1994. Putting Hillary in the White House puts Bill Clinton in the White House too, and no Republican would stand back and watch that happen.

Talk to ANY democrat. 4/5 of them will likely not want Hillary as the nomination. She ain't got a chance. Dem's hate her for being hawkish on the Iraq War as well.

I always thought Bill's problem is that he had no really standards, and fucked women in general.  That's his problem.  Like his predecessors, he should've known that the hotter a chick is, the more likely she is to keep her mouth shut.  The uglier the chick is, her self-esteem is probably ridiculously low, so she has no option to brag about how she boned the President to make herself feel better.  The hot chick just puts another notch on her belt.

It was a case of him being stupid. Clinton brought that same southern "I can fuck you in the ass and bury you in my barn and no one will know" attitude to the White House, and it backfired all over a piece of clothing and onto the American flag. Bad aim Bil

Bring back the Gore beard!

I think, especially if Hillary or Bayh leads the pack and my boy Edwards can't get any traction, that I'm going to forego issue-by-issue nitpicking, and jump straight to irrational hero worship for Gore.  I'm not talking ToxicAdam-McCain hero worship, or Drinky Crow-Annie Proulx hero worship, or even Willco-Bruce Campbell worship.

I'm talking thorough, mindless, image-spamming DMczaf-Shawn Michaels hero worship.  I'm going to be writing fanfics with me and Gore fighting intergalactic ninjas.  It's going to be awesome.

Don't hold your breathe. Al Gore has yet to show any real interest in running. He might change his mind but that window of opportunity to start getting those donations is going to quickly go away.
