Viva Pinata: Fun for 3 hours...
« on: May 14, 2008, 04:51:09 AM »
Because everyone loves the original and the sequel is currently being hyped, I decided to take Viva Pinata for a test spin.  It really is fun... for three hours.  The game lacks focus and stays too "small" for too long.  I'm sure the garden and stuff expands, but everything feels so forced.  This game doesn't really have freedom and fun of other "sim" titles.  It has charm and everything, though.  The sequel could really be great.

Also, I hate Comics Sans.

I couldn't get into it. I played it for about an hour and all I had were a few butterflies and birds and stuff in my garden and I wasn't really sure what I should do next, so I just kinda got bored and never came back to it.

That's not really a valid excuse.

I like plenty of games that folks of all ages can play.  I'm about to buy Ninja Gaiden II in a few weeks, but Little Big Planet and Banjo Kazooie will get my hard earned dollars as well.  Gameplay mechanics don't need to be dumbed down to appeal to gamers of a younger demographic and I'll never be lenient on a game that uses it's E-rating as a handicap.

I love playing this game for a few hours a day everyday.

Willco: I like the freedom more because it makes you think of what you haven't planted or created to attract new pinatas.  It's so awesome.

Every so often I clear out and sell my garden completely and start over with plants and stuff that I have never built before to see what comes out to my garden.

Sounds like it's not dumbed down enough if you need clearer goals to even play it.

3 hours?  wtf man, did you breed anything besides worms?

i've sunk way too many hours into this game.  apparently, VP2 is more objective based and goal oriented so it may be better for you.  VP was all about dicking around and experimentation imo.

As much as I wanted to like Viva Pinata, due to its cool concept and creative art style, I couldn't get into it because I felt like the first few hours constantly bombarded and overwhelmed you with new information instead of gradually introducing you to it, and then the time after that was a lot of waiting around for stuff to happen (i.e. births, new pinatas to visit, etc). Not to mention, the area you can terraform is relatively small. And how many times can you play the boring mating games?

Also, I never quite understood how to stop fights between 2 pinatas.

I think you have to fence them in? I had the same problems you had. Anyway I got sick of rebuilding stuff in the small area to get new pinatas and stopped playing it. I should really go back.

We've already established that I'm good at the game.  I even got all these dumb pinatas Mupepe wants to fornicate with.  So what do you got now, Mr. Slayers Propoganda?

Yeah, a videogame's life expectancy is pretty short in your DVD drive.  Maybe I need to adopt that pick up 'n play mentality too.

Here is something to chew on.

I just hit level 32.  I thought the game was over at 30.  You stop leveling at 50.

The game just keeps throwing awesome shit at me.

I kinda agree with groo. The game throws so much at you at first and then just sort of dies, and yet every time I play it I find myself looking at the clock and wondering where all the hours went.
