O SHIT! O SHIT! APARTMENT DRAMA IS GOING DOWN!
« on: May 15, 2008, 03:46:26 AM »
The son of the downstairs neighbor (we have four units on my building - three on top, one on bottom) crashed his father's BMW into one of the load bearing support beams of the building and caved in part of the downstairs wall.  We agreed to help cover his ass with the landlord, because that's going to be a huge monetary issue, but he is going to tell his father.

Well his father just got home and it sounds like a fucking beatdown!

The lesbians are in the unit across the way ('bout 20 yards really).  There was a big debate between my immediate neighbor and the downstairs kid as whether or not we would completely lie and claim a hit and run.

But the lesbians aren't a fan of us dudes across the way and they actually saw him hit the wall, so we opted against that in case the police interviewed them.

Looks like he came clean and told his father everything.  They're going to call the landlord and 'fess up in the morning.  I don't even want to know what the bill for that will look like - we're talking thousands.

I don't think car insurance covers damage to the apartment building, does it?

I had a teacher who lived on a curve in a road, and her front porch was driven into many times. Her homeowner's insurance paid.

The issue is, does an apartment owner need homeowners' insurance? Since it's not a hit-and-run I think it might be the driver's car insurance.

You'll have to keep us posted. It sounds terrible now, but it'll make for a hilarious story for that kid someday.

I was taking a right and the sun got in my eye and all of a sudden I RAN INTO A BUILDING

Hes probably going to need a seriously good reason to squeeze any money out of his insurance so he doesn't pay out of pocket. Did he give you the legit reason why this happened?

No, he was just being a teenage dumbshit and sped into the parking spot - only he hit one of the support walls.  It's really fucked up.  His units storage space is totally warped; the door looks like something out of Beetlejuice now.  The concrete is cracked too.  It's like the whole concrete foundation moved back and inch and a half.  When it happened, it scared the shit out of me.  I literally thought we got hit by like a mortar shell or something.

His bumper is all fucked up and it'll need a whole need paint job.  Our landlord is going to flip out.  He freaks when he has to do normal landlord stuff, like fix a broken fridge or pipes.  Like, he'll bitch endlessly.  He had to repair an ancient refridgerator and a garbage disposal from the 70s - and he whined for months about how much of a "problem" our units are.

Now this... this he will kill us for.

HAHAHA OMG. I had no idea what the fuck you were talking about until I realized.

The van wasn't on the roof. The chimney jets out like 2 feet from the house into the driveway, like they had added it as an afterthought. I was way too close to the house when I was backing out.

When I was 12, my dad decided to teach me how to drive. I put it in reverse and backed directly into a tree. I was 15 before I got my second driving lesson.

1997

"Ready for your first driving lesson, son?"
"Yes, dad!"
"Okay, go ah- OH MY FUCKING GOD! NO, NOT RIGHT INTO THAT TREE!!!11"

Three years later...

"Okay, I think enough time has passed where we can start again."

Heres my first crash story

I was driving my $1000 Automatic Chevy Cavalier which I had for a month and was my first car in the middle of Winter. Was driving out of work and looked down at my $90 refurbished offbrand Radio and BAM! right into a telephone pole. Crumpled the passenger side, I'm so happy I didn't have anyone with me. Thats the day I started not driving like an oblivious teenager.

Heres my first crash story

My first crash:

While flying over a hill on a service road between Bloomsburg and Catawissa, my transmission dropped and sent me clipping into a several ton pound boulder  (I wanna say 2) on the side of the road. I moved it quite a distance. My car then rolled a bunch of times, hit a telephone poll (while rolling sideways), and landed upside down. The car was demolished.

I broke my leg in a few places, my jaw, a few ribs, and I had a serious concussion.  My head went through the windshield though I don't know if my whole body did.  I probably didn't have my seatbelt on, but the car was like, half its original size after the crash.

I can't believe you lived. A friend once smashed a Blazer into a giant pole of some sort and it split the car nearly right down the middle. 3/4s of it was separated and he ended up with a broken collar bone. Not nearly as epic as hitting a boulder and rolling though.

I can't believe you lived.

I remember being repeatedly told how lucky I was to have survived, but I think doctors pull that bullshit line on everyone to make them feel special.  The crash was on August 25-26, 2001, and I still don't remember Sept 11th.  Also, during this period I no longer remember, I came out to my parents in an attempt to make them feel bad and thus displace some of the guilt I felt (it worked).

My cousin once drove the family car into his parent's kitchen...while the rest of the family was eating dinner. Lively conversation ensued, I'm told.

Luckily, his dad is a builder by trade so they made the best of things and made a new extension to the kitchen.

you're GAY?

i thought you were an academic!

my one crash was taking an unfamiliar country road in the dark.  the road did a 90 degree turn left with no warning, i hit the breaks but the car kept going onto a gravel path where the car ran up onto a boulder.  car wasn't significantly damaged but it needed to be repaired.  thankfully it was an early 90s taurus so it wasn't like it was a nice car

My sophomore year in college I had a weekend paper route to get a little extra scratch.  I was going from one neighborhood to another in Athens at like four in the morning and this idiot dude in a black car with black tinted windows and NO HEADLIGHTS ON pulled out in front of me while I was doing like 35-40 mph.  I didn't have my seat belt on, which you're not required to if you're delivering mail or papers- very fortunate for me, I didn't even know it at the time.  :lol

Anyway, I smacked into the dude in my '89 Mercury Tracer hatchback (I loved that little p.o.s. car) and then the next thing I knew, I was crawling out of the wreckage on the other side of the four lane road, picking glass out of my forehead from where I had bashed into the damn windshield.  I had to go to physical therapy for a couple months because my knee had bashed into the steering column pretty hardcore and I couldn't walk right for a while.  But the coolest thing is that like four or five months later, I'm at a party and scratching at my scars when my fingers come away bloody.  There was a little shard of glass that had been IN MY HEAD for months and just now pushed back out.  I grossed everyone out by showing them my cool little glass shard and bleeding everywhere.

My next car, a '97 Corolla had an unfortunate tendency to get hit while not in motion by other idiot drivers, but those are stories for other threads.

I've done a few really dumb things in a car but i've never been in a really bad accident by myself...

When I was like 14 I was driving my dad's car when I was visiting him in New Mexico.  I was backing out of his driveway and he has this big brick wall surrounding his property.  I backed up too fast and went right through it.  :(  My dad laughed and told me to just keep going.

When I was like 12 I was in Tennessee and in the car with my mom and brother.  We were driving down a highway right by a mall.  The mall has an exit perpindicular to the highway and this lady tried to cut across the highway to turn left and though she could do it before we got there.  She t boned us.  We flew sideways and hit a stop sign.  We flattened and ramped over the stop sign, spun in circles a few times and landed in a ditch.  My seatbelt broke due to the collision and I slammed into the drivers side rear passenger window on impact and then due to the spinning and all that jazz, slammed into the passenger side as well.

It was this crazy old lady and her grandson that went to my school.  Bitch had beehive hair and kept talking about how messed up her car was.  Her car still ran... cunt. :'(

That was my first thought as well. The landlord might want to get a structural engineer out to take a look at the place.

A fucked up load bearing beam will put excessive forces on non-load bearing beams and columns.  Unless they overdesigned the hell out of it, I'd get that shit fixed now instead of six months later when the place falls apart.

Anyway, I had apartment drama last year.  A Mexican couple lived at the basement floor.  I guess the husband, whose name is Marcello, might have been cheating with a "Mexi-whore" (wife's words).  The wife was proud of her Puerto Rican roots, often telling people all the time about where she is from.  The husband was Mexican and had no qualms about it.  They'd often argue in the parking lot in both English and Spanish.  They'd often invite obese single moms who wore wife beaters and talked about their daughters.  The PR mom had a 14 year old daughter and a white trash mom asked if she was a virgin.  The mom said yes and said that she was surprised because when she was 14, she was "drinking, smoking, and fucking every day."  The trailer mom agreed and drank more Natty Ice.

They would argue almost daily.  At first she harangued Marcello's drinking habits at first and then the fact that he would start going to his brother's place where he might have been banging a Mexican girl.  I never got to hear the conclusion to this as their lease was up.

dude don't fuck around if your apartment has structural problems. a couple of weeks ago the plaster  on our ceiling caved in in our bathroom because of some fuckup the plaster guys made when they renovated the place:

the administration of this building is actually not bad at all and pretty nice, but we got on the landlord's ass anyway because the last thing you want is for some structural problem to totally fuck up your apartment.

I was like, "what, who's dad?" then I remembered what this thread was supposed to be about.  Yeah Willco, I'd suggest the landlord get a structural engineer to check that out.

Also Cloud... Lucky no one was in there at the time. That could have hurt a little bit.

actually it fell on me, but only on my back (i had just gotten out of the shower and had bent over to shake my hair out... lucky). i was bleeding pretty bad though.

our building was built in like 1700 or something but the apartments inside are pretty nicely renovated, never thought something like this would happen. you get surprises all the time.

Amusing: I'm actually posting this on a Mac, lolz

Anyways, I've only hit one thing ever with my car, a '91 Honda Accord with 247,000 miles on it. I hit a tree in April... more like nudged it. It was 3 AM and I was backing out of my friend's front yard, looking behind me to make sure I don't hit the tree behind me. I ended up hitting the tree in front of me, ironically enough. I just nudged it and all it did was knock out the plastic part of my headlight.

The tree was undamaged, I shit you not.

The only crash I ever did was on highway 17 towards santa cruz (very windy 40-50 mph highway).  I was talking to somebody next to me and when I looked ahead, the SUV ahead of me was braking, I braked too hard and the wheels locked.  Probably was going less than 10 mph faster than him.  Luckily there wasn't even a scratch on his car (I have no idea how) and it was his mom's car so he was happy to just let me go.

The worst near accident I've ever been in was also on the same highway going towards santa cruz.  My friend likes to drive fast around corners and decided to take one a little too fast.  Luckily, it was one of the spots on the highway where there was no center divider and it was the middle of the night so we span out onto the other side of the highway and were part-way into the emergency lane for the north-bound traffic (we were going south).  He backed out back into the right direction of the highway and not one car saw that.

But I bet it made for a good lol-story. :)

Glad you didn't get hurt!

Worst near accident I had was when I was 16 and driving 60 mph on a gravel road with my newer car.  I knew about how safe driving on gravel was at those kinds of speeds but I was young and dumb.  So I make a tight corner and obviously, the car starts sliding across the road.  A couple hundred feet away, there is a driveway where a big ass SUV is pulling out.  As dumb as I was, any idiot would know better than to get onto the road when there is a dumbass drifting and spinning out a couple hundred feet away.  Nevertheless, the SUV begins to pull out and heads in my direction.

In a stupid teenage move, I decide to overcorrect, which makes it worse.  Now the SUV is beginning to drive in my direction and seems to be hauling ass.  I start freaking out and in a moment where I briefly became religious, I went down a shoulder, avoiding the wreck.  If it was even a half second delay in that shoulder move, the vapid SUV driver would have hit me and I'd probably be drinking my meals through a straw right now.

Fortunately, I backed out with enough speed and drove away.  My car's alignment was fucked and had to get it fixed but better that than what might have happened.
