My recent adventures with RMTs
« on: August 04, 2006, 04:36:01 AM »
Basically, anyone who has ever touched an MMORPG knows what RMTs are, but in case you don't, I'll explain it.

RMT = Real Money Traders. People who farm the in-game money, whatever that may be, and sell it to people in real life, for real cash. Basically it shouldn't need to be said that they screw the game up for people who play legitimately, like me. A lot of the people who do it for a "career" are from China and they work in cramped spaces and spend pretty much all day trying to gather game money to turn into real cash.

Well anyway, I'm currently trying to get a certain piece of armour for my character. It's rare/exclusive coat (for people who don't play FFXI, that basically means it cannot be bought/sold in the game and therefore has no monetary value). Unfortunately, it drops off of a monster that also happens to drop an item that's worth a lot of in-game currency. So you can understand why the RMTs are all over this guy. He is damn near impossible to claim because there are so many RMTs and they regularly cheat.

Well, I heard a strategy from someone that if you ask the RMTs nicely, sometimes they will let you have the coat after they kill the monster, since they usually throw it away anyway. They're only interested in money.

The only problem is, communicating with them is usually a longshot because they don't usually speak much english, if any.

So, I went to where the monster spawns to check it out, and I see 4 RMTs there. So I basically said a really dumbed down version of "Hey, if you guys happen to get the coat, could I have it" and they were like, "Sure." Next thing I know I get a party invite from them. Which I thought was weird since these guys are usually pretty apprehensive toward letting random people in their party. So, Oooookay... I joined.

So anyway, as it turns out, these guys thought I was an RMT too for some reason. Weird. I tried to get the point across to them that no, I'm not, I'm just helping you guys out for the coat, I don't give a shit what you do. They thought it was hilarious and proceeded to ask me questions like "Are you girl? Are you from US? How old? You cute girl? What's US like?"

Actually, they were pretty fun to talk to and they even said they shouldn't be talking to me but they were having fun so fuck it.

Actually, we killed the monster 3 times together, but it never dropped what either of us wanted.

So, this is my second night hanging out with these 2 guys and 2 girls, and they're still super nice and considerate. I almost feel really bad for liking them as people because pretty much everyone hates them and would like to see them gone from the game forever. But at the same time, getting their help is like a "I'll scratch your back, you scratch mine" type of deal. We're both getting what we want out of it in the end, and having fun just talking about shit along the way.

Wow, that was a super long and nerdy post, but I thought maybe some people who play MMORPGs would get a kick out of my dumb little story.

So if anyone here happens to play FFXI on Fairy server, watch out I'm a gilseller now lolz.  :o

haha i buy gil and i'm on fairy =P actually i need power leveling or something cause being so low leveled sucks ass. Crazy that you got to actually talk to them and that they were nice. a few years ago i used to do fish botting and omg when that was in its great day there were wars with those damn freaking gil farmers.

I havent seen any on fairy but thats cause i'm level 11 right now.

If you get some good gear for War, or Whm let me know hehe i'm trying to have a fun time with my friend playing the game again after a long vacation. Fairy is nice though.

Actually, I've been given a party invite as well. When I use to play WoW, my guildies all abused the farmers and power leveling services.  One of them had a low level alt listed in the guild and I saw that alt on late at night.  They didn't recognize me or respond, and they weren't online either(not on vent). So I realized they were getting power leveled and watched how they did it.  The plvler was taking a lot of damage, because it was a mage and he basically was running through enemies, grabbing a parade of zombies and nuking them all at once. He also had to take a lot of downtime, so I started healing himif had trouble and then they added me to the party.  We plvled for like 3 hours and he would randomly type GO but not kick me from the party.  I don't know if it was his english or what and why if he wanted me to go he didn't just simply kick me.  GO and GOOD was the only english he seemed to know.

I never used that stuff, because.. well if you have to do that in a game, then fuck that game.  But my friends were constantly spending money to buy gold and get powerleveled/  Then they'd find stuff stolen from their inventory or huge chunks of money missing and I wonder why they would put up with it.

Powerleveling sounds quite a bit different from what they do in XI. People actually pay for it in WoW? That's interesting. Powerleveling in XI is rediculously easy, all you need is a friend who has a mage job, bard, hell even paladin over 60 and you can make chains and fight stuff that would normally be way too hard for you, while they hang back and just cure you every so often. Of course this method isn't very common past around level 40, since if you have a good party setup you shouldn't need anyone powerleveling you anyway.

I was totally convinced that these RMTs were going to kick me from the party at some point, like, their boss would walk in and be all "who the fuck is that, kick them." But in reality even if the big ticket item did drop, I can't do shit unless I'm party leader, so basically to them it's free help and all they're losing out on is a worthless item that they would toss away anyhow.

Yah, I just did a google look and power leveling 1-60 is $300. Gold varies a lot, if you shop around or whatever. Like anywhere between $10-$30 for 100 gold I'd guess.

That's just way too much money being put into a game.

I just found the service my friends used, checked how much it would cost for my warlock to reach top level (60) from it's last level (48): $125.  Now I know why one of them was having wife troubles.  She must have been reading the bills.

ya i need to find me a few friends on fairy. Right no i'm in the gaf ls which is full of 75 characters but all they are doing is focusing on completing COP. Which is cool and all but yeah kind of sucks for me and my friend. They are supportive and all i just want my damn subjob so i can start working on new jobs i didnt have the last time i played FFXI.

And gil is resonable. I was gonna buy a $300 dollar character a few weeks ago but until i see my friend is devoted to playing i'm not putting much more into the game. Sadly both wow and ffxi have strengths and weaknesses and i'm drawn to FFXI cause i can play it on 360 (wireless gamepad owns all)

I wanna start doing quests and stuff i hate leveling in Valkrum dunes and Yato Jungle (whatever the fuck its called) sad thing is even after a 2 year vacation i know how to get everywhere in the game that i went to previously. No looking at the map just tell me where to go and i know how to get there. Is this sad or what?

Interesting that they'd show any kind of consideration. Most of my experience with RMTs involves them either botting NMs or partying directly on top of my exp. party. Perhaps some of them are eager to show that, if it doesn't interfere with their job, they don't mind being nice every now and then.
