Update: Ash is no longer with us - R.I.P. little buddy
« on: May 16, 2008, 02:44:33 AM »
I left the window open and had a fan on, but it looks like he's dying of a heat stroke.  He's barely alive.  I have him sitting on a frozen ice pad right now praying he can come out of this.

Oh no! Are there any vets in your area that will take him? I don't know if chins are considered exotic or not, but even a vet who really just treats dogs and cats might be able to do something. Maybe they'll give him IV fluids or something.

I hope he pulls through! Poor guy.

Edit: Everything I'm reading says to cover the ice pad with something, I imagine so they don't get cold burns. You could probably use like a pillowcase or a sock or something. (I used to do this for my cat, a water bottle covered with a sock, and she'd lie next to it.)

That's not a bad idea, if it doesn't break company policy or anything. So long as the back room is climate controlled somehow.

I'm reading all this stuff about chins and heatstroke right now, and apparently it can get dangerous once it reaches 75 degrees F. :(

No, Willco has a chinchilla. It's like, the cross between a squirrel and a bunny and is so cute and soft. You're thinking of a Japanese Chin dog, which is also cute and looks like it'd be very soft.

Only exotic vet that can take him is closed.

Right now I have him covered on a iced beef steak covered in plastic and a bunch of popsicles wrapped in plastic.  Someone told me to put him in the fridge and leave it open.  He just moved his tail - he is actually moving.  This is a great sign.  I really, really hope he pulls through.

I'm glad he's moving!

I'd take him in first thing tomorrow morning for fluids. All the sites I'm reading are saying that's a treatment used. They also suggest putting him in cool water. I'd do that, and try to get him to drink something. And pet him and talk to him and hope he pulls through.

Yeah, Japanese Chin came up in google (which I've never heard of actually).  I've never heard of a chinchilla either, although there's a town near here called Chinchilla oddly enough.

What an educational thread.

Hope he'll be alright Willco. :(

I can't believe a dog/cat hospital won't take him just to give fluids or something. Hell, at this point, if I lived near you I'd come over and give fluids myself. I can't give them intravenously but I can do subcutaneously and that's better than nothing.

Oh jeez, that's insane! The 24-hour clinic I went to with my old dog just moved closer to me, thankfully. It used to be about a 45 minute drive I think, and my mom and I went there in a snowstorm when our dog got sick.

About the subcutaneous fluids: Pretty much all mammals have some loose skin somewhere on their body. Think the scruff of the neck in cats. You can inject fluids into there. I do it with my cat once a week to clean out the toxins in her system because she's in kidney failure and has been for nearly 2 years now. It's not as invasive as it sounds.

This is an educational thread!

My gut reaction is that the fact that he didn't like it is a good sign, because he's still strong enough to care. Like if he were dying, he'd just let you manhandle him. I might just be too optimistic, but I'm still hoping for him!

How long until the vet is open? Hopefully he'll hold on long enough to get there, or maybe he'll even bounce back. You never know!

I put him on the beef steak covered with clothes in the second part of my fridge w/ water and a cardboard area made from an old pizza box.  I am sure this will kill my electricity bill, and I'm going to have to throw away all the food in the fridge as well as clean it out due to the droppings, but he is way more lively.  I'll see if I can take footage.

A few years back, I had a dog who died of overheating. It was pretty surreal; I'm taking the dog for a short walk on a mild Spring day, he starts breathing in the most fucked up way, and an hour later the vet tells me that there's really nothing that can be done, that his internal temperature is high enough to cause irreparable brain damage. Within two hours of the first symptoms, my dog is dead. That really fucking sucked. He had cancer, so I guess something just malfunctioned.

Hope it works out for you. Typically, you'd want to wrap the pet in lukewarm towels, and provide some form of breeze to slowly chill the towels down. Otherwise, supposedly it could backfire the other way, and the pet could go into a coma. At least that's what the vet told us. No idea how things work with chinchillas.

It was so scary to see him sprawled out on the top part of his cage.  It looks like he went upwards on to his flannel hammock - which did not help heating.  He was completely immobile and barely breathing.  He didn't do anything when I began to move him.  I really thought he was done for.  The signs of life he has been showing the past hour have made me optimistic, but it doesn't look like he's out of the woods yet.  I'm doing the best I can.  These animals are very high maintenance and he's my first one, so I'm kind of driving blind here.  I'm pretty scared.

It's really admirable that you went so far as to leave your fridge open to help him. :)

If you have a cooler, you can pack it with some ice and some stuff from your fridge. Maybe salvage some of your food, especially what was on the door.

I wouldn't know what was right or wrong with the footage, anyway. I'm just reading all this tonight.  I've never owned a chinchilla even though I want one.

are you sure you're supposed to put them in something as cold as a freezer?  you could just try spritzing them with water from an old empty windex bottle or something.

If you get water in their fur, their fur is so dense that they can get fungal infections.  I'm not putting him in the freezer either - I'm putting him in an open refridgerator.

He kept walking away from the cold stuff in the fridge and tried to waddle out.  He's moving on very, very weak strength but he seems uncomfortable there.  I have moved his cage to the open part of the kitchen - it's the coolest area of the house.  I moved my fan from my room.  He went right into his cage - into his plastic wheel.  I put down water on the first level and the wrapped frozen steak in front of the wheel.  My hope is that the fan is blowing hitting that frozen steak and blowing it on to him on the wheel.  He is no longer laying on his side, though.  I should take these as good signs, I guess.

I think it's really good that he's walking around! If it's an exercise wheel, I wouldn't let him run in it. Everything I'm reading says to not even let them use wheels on hot days because they can give themselves heatstroke.

I bet he makes it because of your diligence and acting quickly. :)

I have no idea where you live, but I find it hard to believe there isn't a vet available in your whereabouts (not saying you haven't tried looking).

Most vets are closed and don't have emergency hours.   Furthermore, very few vets can take chinchillas.  I've heard a lot of horror stores about inexperience vets pretty much killing chinchillas due to lack of experience, even with things like simple blood tests.  They really are not an animal you want to take to just anyone.  I even called the emergency pet clinic and they told me to pretty much try my best 'till the exotic animal vet opened.
PSP

Good luck to your chinchilla.

Do you know how much the bill may be if he needs hospitalization? I figure given how much medical is in the US, the vet may cost even more.

One of my cats was in the vet for three days; the bill came out to USD700. Ouch.

It won't be THAT much because he's so small, but I'm prepared for it if it's expensive.  It might mean things will have to wait, but he's my buddy and it's my fault he's in this position (I am pretty sure the air closed my bedroom door - it happens a lot and I forgot to prop it open... he pretty much cooked in there).  I have to try.

My cat, Melanie, is in renal failure. She was diagnosed in June of 06. I give her fluids weekly and she sees the vet every 2 months or so for bloodwork. It's common and scary, but manageable. I'm hoping she still has a few more years. :)

No.  Quite frankly, heat strokes are pretty much fatal in chinchillas.  I went to like, twelve respected chinchilla care sites and they tell you how to prevent it, but really not how to treat it.  Several said, "Heat strokes at fatal. The end."  One said don't blame a heat stroke for killing your chin, blame a poor owner.

I am kind of thinking it's a miracle he's come back this far.

No, they didn't say anything.  They were just going to have the vet techs take a look at him and take care of him before the doctor did.  With high maintenance and exotic pets like chinchillas, I'm pretty sure they don't want to set up false expectations.  I knew the moment I saw him sprawled out on his back, barely alive last night, that there was a good chance he could not recover.
