Got the call - Ash's temperature is normal!  He's getting his motor skills back too.  She said he jumped!  They're going to hydrate him a little bit more and I can pick him up afterwards.  She said I probably saved his life.

I look at a couple today, but most are the kind you need to install through a window.  The problem is I don't have windows capable for such an AC unit and if I were to install it through a wall, I'd need my landlord's permission.  There is a gigantic mobile unit at Target for $299, but that seems pretty pricey and I don't know if I can afford that after this vet visit - which I'm sure will put me back in the range of $150 to $200.

That's so exciting!!

Why do you need a landlord's permission to put an AC in the window? You just put them in and take them out. They're not a permanent structure. :)

I was looking for this thread earlier to get the latest, but couldn't find it.  Clearly thread title changes are enough to perplex and confound me.  So glad I found it now.  :)

Can I get deleperized

I know you can't make new threads, but a serious thread like this one isn't the place to ask to be unlepered. We're all concerned about Ash here, not forum/banning/lepering issues. Maybe a post in a WDYB thread with a "by the way, can I be deleperized?" would be more appropriate.

Some good news and bad news.

I got Ash a friend - a young kit named Rocky.  Rocky is living in a separate cage until both can live together without supervision and Ash gets his strength back.  The two did have a controlled environment meet and greet session, and both communicated wonderfully with another (series of chirps and squeaks).  Rocky really likes Ash.

Ash has been rather lethargic since his return from the vet, which was to be expected, but then he started to show some disturbing symptoms.  He dragged his hind legs on more than one occasion and was leaning his head against the cage bars.  These signs really trouble me.  I fear he might have permanent brain damage from the heat stroke.  I am hoping a day or two of rest will bring him back to normal, but he is really concerning me.

Since I don't know anything about pets like that, hopw hot does it have to be for them to get heatstrokes?

If the temperature and the humidity combined exceed 150, they can have heat strokes.

It's looking more and more like brain damage.  He can't really stand anymore and he choked himself while drinking water.  The he pretty much submerged himself in the water on accident.  I had to dry him off and he's not putting up anything resembling a fight.  I am not sure he's going to make it anymore.

No, the temperature is fine now.  It's nice and cool in the part of the apartment I have relocated his cage to temporarily.  He has a constant breeze from a fan.  And he has ice packs during the day.

This is just what I can assume is brain damage.

This really doesn't sound good.

Knock on wood - hope you don't have to contemplate putting your pet down.

I've had to do so with three of my cats, and two times I've regretted my decision. It really sucks.

Keep an eye out for diarrhea. That and hind leg dragging were the last days of one of my guinea pigs.

His motor skills are seriously compromised, but he hasn't had a full day of rest.  I put out frozen water bottles in their cages to cuddle with, although the temperature is very good right now - it's not nearly as hot as yesterday or the day before (when Ash had his heat stroke).

Rocky is really feisty and he likes Ash a lot, but I don't know if Ash is really aware of his surroundings anymore.  I'll take some pictures of Rocky when I get home.  He's a lot more energetic and brave (very curious fellow) than Ash was pre-heat stroke, even.  But he's also a kit and like, a third the size of Ash.  I was hoping they'd be good pals, but Rocky is just too much for Ash at the moment, so they'll stay separated.

I rescued Rocky last night; the chinchilla colony he belonged to was starting to show serious signs of overheating and possible heat strokes.  He was the only alert one and tried to nudge everyone awake.  The pet store had no real air conditioner and they were stuck in an aquarium-like viewing tank, which is hardly cool.  So I rescued the kit.  He's loved every second of his new home and is very playful.  Surprisingly social for an untamed chinchilla.

i'm glad to hear that ash pulled through and that he has an awesome playmate now. even if he does have brain damage and it takes a while for him to get back to his old self, at least he won't be lonely!

i hope that he gets all better soon :)

Ash is hospitalized again.  CrystalGemini came over and he really started to deteroriate before our eyes.  She was kind enough to take him to 24-hour vetinary clinic in Concord, where he will stay overnight - hopefully to stay hydrated and get a heavy dosage of anti-biotics.  The doctor believes he is having a secondary reaction to the heat complications, and possibly in his kidney and bladder.\\

I use my PS3 more, simply because I'm much more of a film geek than a videogame enthusiast.  More importantly, I can get a better return on my investment with the Elite than a 40GB PS3.

Ash's secondary complications from his heat-related illness are too much for him now - his organs are shutting down.  My options are euthanasia or life support at this point, the latter will be even more of a financial hardship.  If they give him an I.V. there's a less than 10% chance that'll come back. :(

try to remember all the fun you had with him... you did a wonderful thing by giving an animal a happy life, no matter how long or short that life is. nothing can prepare you for the loss, but you have to look back on the good times and realize that he's probably very thankful to have been happy in all his days with you.

my condolences, i hope it gets easier for you soon :(

Maybe you should just live alone for the next few years. This is what happens when you rely on companionship. Being a hermit isn't so bad now, is it.
