I'm not an expert on the man, but I've gotten really into his big movies over the past couple of months.  I see nothing in his biography that would indicate the apparent drop off in his public presence/film quality.  From the early 70s to the early 80s he was the motherfucking shit.  Since then, he's still been working, but nothing noteworthy.  Did he piss people off?  Is it because they don't make many gritty 70s-y scripts anymore?

I watched Network for the first time since the rise of lowest common denominator Fox news-inspired punditry, and it's motherfucking scary how prophetic that movie is.  And I thought it was pretty prophetic watching it in the mid-to-late 90s.  It's funny reading about how people thought the script was too ridiculous back in the day, when now I wouldn't bat an eye if many of the events portrayed in it actually happened.

Did he stop doing coke? You know, like Chevy Chase and Robin Williams among other people who were funny but then stopped doing coke and became lame.

I should start snotting some of that shit.

He made a lot of shitty movies in the '80s and he's not really an auteur, just a classy director.  Lots of critics still shit all over him - Armand White constantly insults him.

he ran hot & cold in the 80's and 90's.  Kind of like a used to be awesome ballplayer with a declining batting average.

There's a lot of his later, hell, earlier work that I haven't seen so I can't comment on it.  Some of those are only hazily remembered viewings from HBO ten years ago (I remembered liking a Don Johnson movie?).  But up until the 90's his films were consistently feted by the Academy Awards.  He didn't really drop off in the 80's, more like he just wasn't the on the hot streak anymore that he hit in the 70's.

ps
Deathtrap is effing great.

There are two kinds of men in this world.  Those that love 70s boobs, and those that hate 70s boobs.  Everyone knows what side I am on.  I muttered the words "70s boobs" while purchasing Logan's Run.  And it was like a pinata garden of 70s boobs.  It was wonderful.
