I am looking for trip-hop recommendations
« on: May 17, 2008, 10:20:29 PM »
I really like Portishead's first two albums and now I'm looking for some other trip hop to get into. Where should I start to get into the genre, and also are there any other bands/artists similar to Portishead (sparse female vocals over bass/keyboard/drums and vintage samples) that I should look into

so far, so good on the suggestions

but trip-hop is more a media label than an actual movement

check out Goldie's first album "Timeless"

Actually I have it. I've listened to it a couple times and I'm still figuring it out; I didn't like it at all on the first listen. Perhaps because I listened to it at 3AM after staying out all night. Second listen I like it more, but I'm a bit bummed it's such a departure from their first two albums. I didn't want a rehash (like their second album to a certain degree) but Third kinda lacks the dark melodies and instrumental stuff I liked about Dummy and most of their second album.

yes, however from a production standpoint, it touches on many of the same thematic elements covered by massive attack and by portishead, though not so much portishead

Yeah, Hooverphonic have a real serious funk sound and varying sound throughout their album.

As far as Zero 7 goes, start from the first on up. Their sound is sort of evolving with each release.

Sia and Tina Dico, both of them are amazing. "Home" (and the remixed version) are my absolutely favorite Zero 7 tracks (vocals are by Tina Dico). Also, Sia's voice is absolutely phenomenal when she goes over the top with it.

doesn't most of his later stuff bore you though? i couldn't find anything remotely as good as Maxinquaye in his catalog. Unless you count the Massive Attack stuff he worked on.

I liked Nearly God a lot; it's not nearly as good as Maxinquayem, but there are a few gems in there.  I haven't listened to anything he did after Pre-Millennium Tension, which I did find pretty dull.

They were playing that song (The Heart's A Lonely Hunter) in the Japanese restaurant I went to over the weekend, for some reason.

Oh and another :bow for Groo's Mono recomendation (Formica Blues). The Single "Life in Mono" is so fantastic, its ingrained in my memory from a mixtape my uncle had made in the 90's using the same track.
