PGR3 is like Pringles
« on: May 17, 2008, 10:54:15 PM »
Once you pop you can't stop.

I bought this used over a year ago and never really played it, but I put it in today and it's mad fun. I really like the career interface, it makes me want to keep on going. And the gameplay is fun too, obv.

I've never played the PGR games, but that's how I feel about Burnout Paradise right now. :-[

If I had to get one, should I get for PGR3 or PGR4?

If I actually beat this I think I'll actually buy PGR4, is it a major improvement or just more goodness?

graphics are a major improvement and well worth the extra $.  You can find it really cheap if you look hard enough.  Like 20 bucks cheap

You know the cone challenges in PGR3? In PGR4 you're supposed to run INTO the cones.

The structure of the career mode changes alot, and for the better.

Soundtrack rapes PGR3's.

Car selection is greater.

So you played it only today and mark it as "once you pop you can t stop" already, not knowing whether you'll still be playing it in the coming days or weeks? I don't know but don't look at me when you get bored of the game and stop playing it, cause your "you can't stop" argument is just gonna end up looking silly and you will be the laughing stock of EB.

I am eating Pringles right now.  I doubt highly PGR3's similarity to their Sour Cream & Onion goodness.

Let's be fair here, he's talking about PGR3.  He's probably posting here while waiting for one of the overly lengthy loading screens to finish up.

That was my only real complaint with it.  It's one of my favorite racers this gen, but the loading absolutely destroyed it for me.  Retries are important in a game like this and having to wait for each one drove me crazy.  You literally had to wait for EVERYTHING.  I couldn't deal with it.

I had hoped PGR4 would be better in this regard, but based on the demo, it's not.

here: PGR4 load time

and surprisingly I just saw your video in youtube playlist (PGR loading times)
let's compare
PGR3 load time

Bizzare did good work with PGR4, it's now 1280x720 2xAA before it was 1024x600, with smooth and nice framerate and yet faster load times.  :-*

Yea, retries are fucking annoying.

I did another 15 or 20 events today and I'm going to pop it in again now :hyper

It's a good game to play while you're on AIM with someone.

edit: wtf @ that 1 minute vid, it never takes that long for me. 20 seconds or so maybe?

AV, you're gonna be wowed by how much better PGR4 looks.  In terms of gameplay, PGR4 seems to be a bit more realistic and have a higher difficulty level.
If you like PGR3, you should have lots of fun with PGR4.

I find PGR4's main draw to be the great new locations and tracks, as well as the weather system.

Racing around some of the new hilly tracks with rain & thunder using the in-car view and a wheel is easily one of the best racing experiences I've ever had.  Hitting puddles and feeling its effect on the car is a great addition as well.

I just couldn't get into PGR3 at all.  Too much focus on cone/Kudos BS and not enough emphasis on actual racing, shitty image quality, borked photo mode, long loading times, etc.  Thankfully PGR4 fixed alot of that.  I still wish they would've gone in there and tweaked  the cockpit views - some are damn near impossible to play in that mode - but all in all PGR4 was the game that actually made me appreciate the series.....the series that's now dead and burried.

In car views are indeed not very good on some cars and I have to resort to bonnet cam.  But that seems to be true of all racers and I find PGR to have among the more usable in-car cameras.

If I remember correctly the in-car camera in PGR turns slightly into the corner which helps see around the A-pillars a bit.

I'm not a huge racing game guy so the missions you think are doofy are probably part of the appeal for me.

Actually, I retract my previous statement. I just saw PGR3 in Osaka Nipponbashi Den-Den Town for 380 yen.  This is actually a price that is very 'like Pringles'.

That was actually taken in a worst case scenario.  I selected one of the longest tracks in the game with a full grid of cars.  The loading times vary depending on the size of the event.  20 seconds, however, is not short (especially when retries are added).  It ranges from ~20 seconds (at best) to over 1 minute (at worst).

Didn't say 20s was short.

I played this fucking thing for hours today for some reason. Once you get the controls down drifting around and shit is zenlike. I really enjoy it. I don't notice the loads because I multitask when I play.

I looooved PGR3 but after playing Forza 2, those restart load times were hard to take.

AV - what medals are you going for? It turns into a different game on Gold or Platinum. There's a crazy amount of challenge in there.

How does it change?

I started off on Bronze because I suck at racing games, but I've been bumping it up lately. I'm sort of in the mood for the leisurely AIM-chat time drain right now so I'm not too concerned with the hardest shit. I also want to mark it Beat on my backlog. Then I'll go back for the challenges and shit.

I feel like I'm only now tapping into the real meat of the game and I want to do even more. 19 trophies.

Does the Enzo really break the game?

Well, I think the F50-GT is better still, but the SP campaign scales to what you select. If you pick your Enzo, you'll be up against other Enzos and similarly-specced beast cars. The best way to game the really hard races I found was to take your favorite car in the E class (the Evo for me). It's so much easier to drive better at non-Enzo speeds.

On Gold, you really have to strive for perfection on the cone challenges (going fast, not hitting any cones, keeping your combo alive from start to finish). On Platinum, you need to be perfect AND creative. The races of course are just much more competitive...you'll typically see one CPU car zoom ahead of everyone from the start and you'll have to really work to catch him over the course of multiple laps. I had a lot of photo finishes on those races.

Cheese and Bacon Pringles

• "Ohhhhhhh!" [Stops chewing in mid-bite and nearly spits it out.]

• "Yeah, it's not good."

• "It's a strong cheesy first bite."

• "Ooh, that is nasty."

"…But kind of addictive."

• "It's very smoky. It tastes like nitrates."

• "That's ham. That's not bacon."

• "It has a really heavy pork flavor to it, and a nasty government-cheese flavor as well."

• "Oh God, what kind of cheese is that supposed to be? Toe cheese? These are awful. They're sour and smelly. Even bacon can't make that better."
