I just have two movies.  Ratatouille and Memento.  I usually rent.  Netflix takes forever with HD releases.

I'm more of a renter, Mupepe, since I usually watch movies once.  I only bought the Bluray films because I wanted some showcase discs.

Impressive collection, though.

Nah, I don't really care for many animated movies actually.  I probably own like 2 of them.  So I don't blind buy those.

we have only spider-man 3, assassination of jesse james, and now 2001: a space odyssey. blu ray is like twice as expensive here :-\

i picked up 2001 for jarosh's birthday and we watched it tonight. i can confirm it looks amazing as hell, especially for a 40 year old movie!

I own three movies, Apocalypto, Pan's Labyrinth and some anime that I still haven't watched. Tekkonkinkrit I think it's called. I hesitated in buying DVDs when that was new too; I always worry when I'm buying something that requires a relatively expensive player. I'm definitely getting the Pixar movies, and I want Blue Planet, and Planet Earth. Basically, unless the HD imagery is an important factor, I'll just stick with DVD. I'd never buy a comedy series on Blu Ray.

Crap, crimsondynamics reminded me, I really need to get Blood Diamond on Blu Ray.

Does Sony even care about Bluray in Japan?  It's dumb that pricing would be so off compared to North American releases.

DVDs cost a lot more in Japan, too. It's crazy.

Paprika is awesome! I'm hoping Millennium Actress will be released on BD soon too.

Sony cares about BD in Japan, definitely. The DVD prices are also extortionate here, though, so the tradition is just continuing.

One thing that pisses me off though - a lot of anime that already has English subs overseas is not getting the subtitle work done on the BD version. I guess it's because the subtitling was usually done by an external company hired by whoever published the anime in the States, but it's massively annoying, esp. for really old stuff like Akira, Ghost in the Shell, etc.

Ghost in the Shell has English subtitles.

I really wish the Blu-ray version of Gundam Char's Counterattack and Gundam F91 had subs.  :'(

Paprika's really good. Definitely worth a viewing.

I thought about buying Blu-ray only where visual quality really mattered (I watched Superbad yesterday, and at one point in the movie I asked myself, "man, would you be missing out on anything if this were a DVD?") but if I only bought movies I didn't have, and only those where visual quality mattered, I'd hardly buy any movies at all.  :-\

Blu-ray prices in Japan must be insane. Second-hand Japanese Blu-rays cost double the price of a brand-new US Blu-ray here.

Keep in mind US Blu-rays have to be imported as well, not to mention Japan is about a four hour flight away, and the US is a 16-hour flight...

Ghost in the Shell has English subtitles.

Have you got it? How is the transfer?
All the reviews on Japan Amazon are slating it because they include the DVD and both discs are in tall DVD cases. Might hold on for the American release. It's one I'd like to own, but I'm not paying the JP price, definitely.

http://www.animeondvd.com/reviews2/disc_reviews/6449.php

I don't have it, but I've heard the transfer isn't that great.
