Why exactly does EB love Children of Men so much? The cinematography is stunning, and the special effects are very impressive, but outside of that, the movie falls into pieces. The writing is filled with nonsense, and almost every scene is packed to the brim with so much painfully obvious symbolism, my eyes were rolling out of my head.

You didn't list No Country for Old Men.  Or O Brother.  Or Memento.  Or City of God.  I'd probably say Adaptation, Eternal Sunshine, and Being John Malkovich, too.  In the Mood for Love.  Moulin Rouge.  I'm probably missing a ton of foreign shit, but I am kinda oblivious to the dates when most foreign movies come out.  Oh, Amelie.

Out of all those movies I've only seen No Country and Moulin Rougue, which I like but can never watch again after seeing it 100 times on a cruise

No Country goes on the list. Unbreakable too

2003:

American Splendor
Big Fish
The Cooler
Finding Nemo
Lost in Translation
A Mighty Wind
Oldboy
Open Range

2004:

The Aviator
Collateral
Dawn of the Dead
Downfall (Der Untergang)
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Finding Neverland
The Incredibles
Man on Fire
Napoleon Dynamite
Shaun of the Dead
Sideways
Spider-Man 2

2005:

The Great Raid
Jarhead
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
Sky High
Walk The Line
The World's Fastest Indian

2006:

Apocalypto
Crank
For Your Consideration
Hollywoodland
Pan's Labyrinth
The Prestige
United 93

2007:

28 Weeks Later
3:10 to Yuma
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
No Country For Old Men
Sunshine
Zodiac

Note that I haven't seen a lot of films that make the "Best of" lists for these years.

If I had to choose a most favorite it would split 50/50 between O Brother and Almost Famous.  I find them both to be endlessly watchable for different reasons.

No seriously, I'm not trolling. I own Children of Men, it's a great movie in many respects, but in terms of writing, it's so bad I have to force myself to watch it.
