I've been playing Saga Frontier lately and it's actually fun to me.

So FF7 probably wouldn't bother me too much.

Yeah..I downloaded the PC version from a torrent a few months back. It had small fixes (smoother graphics, updated translation) and it wasn't too bad. I even patched the block hands to look like real hands, lol.

Suppose nostalgia could be blinding me though. Saga Frontier is something I would like to replay; I haven't even seen that game in years.

Replay Legend of Legaia - confirmed better than FF7 in the year 2008

Legend of Legaia! I was just reminiscing about that not too long ago. I played it some back in the Dark Ages [1999 or so], although I don't think that I ever got too far in it. It was yet another game that never got as much love as it should have because it wasn't called "Final Fantasy" or "Xenogears".

I really wish I could play it again, but my copy appears to have been lost somewhere in the sands of time and a used one off Amazon is nearly $40. Bleh.

I tried to play FF7 a few months ago, but I couldn't make it more than a few hours in. Same with the Lunar games, they were both pretty rough. Suikoden II stands up to the test of time, though. I played that too, and it was still pretty sweet.

Haven't played Legaia since the 90's though, but I liked it back then.

I loved FF7, it was my favourite game for a long long time (it was my first rpg and I was 12), but I could imagine that it sucks ass now. Wheres all the e-love for Vagrant Story? No one ever talks about that game :(

FF8 and 9 are fucking amazing, better games probably. X and XII are turds

if FF7 is unplayable, it has nothing to do with the year being 2008.  games don't age like people do, if it was bad now it was bad then.  the problems with the game were perfectly evident when it first came out.  personally I found it full of cool stuff, but unsatisfying overall (then and now).  5/10

and FF8 has cool system concepts, visual design and music, but is ridiculously unbalanced and ridiculously slow.  also 5/10.

FF9, however, is bumped up to a 6/10 given PS2 fast loading.

The people clamouring for a remake are probably just after a game that has a similar tone or mood. I'll admit it was my first rpg but I havent played it in 6-7 years and it probably wouldnt be worth revisiting now. It's a disservice to other rpgs to insist on a remake because there are probably heaps of other better rpgs that dont carry brand name recognition with the weight that ff7 does.

Why Final Fantasy VII is Complete

by Andrew Vestal

Many have written me, concerned:

Aerith dies. You can't bring her back.

You ask that I start a petition--after all, my first one worked! Square rushed the game, you say, and released it before it was finished. Originally, you could bring her back! Make Square give us the TRUE Final Fantasy VII!

And I smile and politely go about my day's business. But, lately, I have received too many of these letters to ignore them, and I must I make my views known.

Some insist the game is unfinished, that I should start a petition to demand the game be "fixed." These people misunderstand the power of the petition.

The Final Fantasy VII Translation Petition asked for fair and equitable treatment. It asked that the game not be censored or cut; that it remain in its original form; that Americans receive, finally, a Final Fantasy game the way it was written. The petition was succesful, and I am proud to have supported it, because it asked for justice.

A petition to demand the insertion of Aerith's ressurection, however, would ask for preferencial treatment. It would selfishly demand more than others have already received. It would ask Square to retouch a finished product at gamers' whims. It would demand the artists tamper with a finished and coherent storyline. It would ask for these things out of greed, and I cannot support it.

Square offers you the Venus de Milo, and you would send it back because it has no arms.

There are rumors that an alternative, superior ending exists, unaccessible because of Aerith's permanent death. Those rumors are nothing but lies. The ending you see is the ending Square originally intended: the largest movie file on the third disc. The ending, as well, is perfectly satisfactory; there's nothing "lackluster" about it. A "better" ending (with Aerith ressurected) is an impossibility. Aerith knew her death was absolutely necessary. Do not presume to know more than she.

And most importantly . . . Aerith should stay dead.

A dying man needs to die, as a sleepy man needs to sleep, and
there comes a time when it is wrong, as well as useless, to resist.
    - Steward Alsop

Aerith's death is a tragedy. I truly do believe this. So was Tellah's. So was General Leo's. So was the death of every person who ever sacrificed themselves for a greater cause.
But unlike deaths in previous Square games, Aerith's death carries long-lasting repercussions that echo long after her passing. For Aerith did not die senselessly. Aerith meant to die.

Some people are so afraid to die that they never begin to live.
    - Henry Van Dyke

Aerith knew her actions would mean her end. But she faced death anyway, aware that only in death could she avert the coming disaster and save her world. She gave her life intentionally, purposefully, and with full knowledge of the consequences. No one ever, EVER forgets that; the tragedy of her loss is what keeps the small party together.

Do not go gentle into that good night
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
    - Dylan Thomas

Even in death her presence is felt. Her memory guides and leads the party on its quest. Her spirit appears in silent reminder of her selfless act. Aerith died. She died! And she died honorably.

Dear, beauteous death, the jewel of the just!
    - Henry Vaughan

If Prince Hamlet came back from the dead, would his indecision be meaningful? If King Lear recovered, would we learn from his folly? And if Aerith were disinterred mere hours after her death, would her sacrifice have any importance? Square should be honored that the death of a character brings about this outcry. It is touching testament to the games' power: the characters are truly loved. And grief is a natural reaction to the death of a loved one. As is denial. Now, Square fans must proceed to the next stage: acceptance.

Do not stand at my grave and weep. I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond glint on snow.
I am the sun on ripened grain. I am the soothing, gentle rain.
When you awake in morning hush, I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry. I am not there. I did not die.

I played it on my PSP a few months ago. It doesn't look too bad for a handheld RPG. The muddled translation is the worst thing about it, some of the more intricate plot points are nigh-on incomrehensible without reading up on it online or something but I still think there is a lot of charm in the world.

Hmm, seems I'm alone on EB for vastly preferring FF7 to 8... yeah the game had a ton of flaws, but god damn I hated the characters, hated the Junction system, hated the story, hated the balance, in FF8. It was definitely my least favorite FF upon release but that's been overtaken by X2 and 12. But I liked the setting a lot. I haven't tried going back and replaying FF7 but I'd imagine I wouldn't be that turned off or disgusted by it, flaws like the crappy character models and bad translation would probably end up being overlooked.

worse than FFX?

Indeed.  Play FFX and suddenly FF7 will look like one of the greatest gaming experiences of all time.

Shit thread.

I haven't had a chance to comment on your new avatar so it's happening now.

    - Anonymous

Aerith Gainsborough gave her life so that the world might live. May she rest in peace.

. . . she smiled, in the end.

Yes, that part was pretty bad. Shouldn't dictate the entire game's quality, however. Tidus matures as the game goes on.
