As sad as it is, I guess I'm kind of glad to see it tank.

For one, I don't really want to see it watered down by bad sequels (like say, The Matrix).  I mean, they pretty much did everything they could with this movie -- anything more would be superfluous.

And also I hope this will put a damper on Hollywood's attempts to make stupid revivals of trash cartoons based on nostalgia value.

I think it was the combination of Iron Man hype, Speed Racer trailers not looking particularly good, and bad reviews from the critics. I had already committed myself to seeing it before all the awful reviews came in, and I'd already seen Iron Man the week before, but still my expectations very low going in.

There is nothing wrong with a good cocktease every once in a while since it makes the outcome something far more anticipated.  An example would be Batman Begins and that massive hard on you should have had walking out of the theater after that ending.

I expect Speed Racer to do better at selling DVDs/Blurays than it did in theaters.

I don't understand what you are trying to say. This box-office is for week 16-18 May. Today is 19 May. How could you know a week ago (9-11 May) that it will bomb the next week?

It already bombed!  It can't bomb again.  It will not recoup a significant amount of its costs.

There is nothing wrong with a good cocktease every once in a while since it makes the outcome something far more anticipated.  An example would be Batman Begins and that massive hard on you should have had walking out of the theater after that ending.

Another great example would be how X-Men 2 alluded to the Phoenix saga. I'm glad that was well worth the wait. Anyways I'm sure Speed Racer will eventually get a sequel no matter how hard it bombed. It will be direct to DVD, directed by Brian Levant, and will stand proud amongst the ranks of Secret of NIMH 2, Neverending Story 3, and Sandlot 2.

Marketed correctly, ANYTHING can make money, especially when it's for kids. Talking about dead franchises with limited pop culture appeal, just look at Alvin & the Chipmunks.
