Blu and Exile - Below the Heavens

Underground/backpack hip hop fans have a knack for over hyping decent albums as the second coming but I think they're right with this one. The entire album is amazing: the production is great, and Blu's flow is going to really impress you; one of the hungriest sounding MCs I've heard in some time. I hate jumping on bandwagons but this album really, really reminds me of Common's Resurrection.

Zero 7 - Simple Things

Blue Tsunami omg. Liked it on first listen, loved in on the second listen. Really digging the mix of dark keys and bass with strings

Portishead - Third

Didn't like it on the first listen but I'm warming up to it now. I miss the hard drums and dark melodies from their first two albums. There's some very good stuff here (The Rip, Nylon Smile, Plastic) and nearly all the songs feature some part I like. Some stuff leaves me cold though (what's up with the odd horns out of nowhere in Magic Doors  :'()

Madvillain - Madvillainy

Rarely goes out of my playlist. I find myself listening to Fancy Clown on repeat all the time lol

Judas Priest - Screaming for Vengeance

Evile - Enter the Grave

Two albums, nearly a quarter century apart. The former, a classic and one of the must influential heavy metal albums ever created. The latter, a tribute to the gods of metal and the best pure thrash album in many years.

10 Years - Division (Hard Rock/Alt Metal)

I give it a 10 out of 10, Just do yourselves a favor and pick this up. Don't walk, run, to the nearest store.

My fav songs on album:
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Beautiful - first single from the album, it reminds me of Wasteland the single from their last album

Actions and Motives - intro song, and a kickass way to start off...

Russian Roulette -  song about being controlled by drugs, as seen from the drugs perspective

11:00AM (Daydreamer) - 3rdsong on the album about living life to the fullest, has the best interlude on the album too

All Your Lies - one of the heavier songs. has the best refrain in any song imo

Alabama - semi-political song about the war (Your failure to find, compromise/the walls are coming down/will you survive sacrifice, or tumble to the ground?)

Proud Of You - Lots of sad piano in this one, one of the best.

jel - soft money (instrumental hiphop):

probably one of the most slept on hiphop producers ever.  no one rocks the SP-1200 like jel, and his drums not only bang but are probably the most natural sounding i've ever heard.

portishead - third (trip hop):

still feeling this one out.  was a big fan of their older albums but the lack of percussions is a letdown for me.  nonetheless, there are some awesome soundscapes to be heard in this release.

controller 7 - left handed straw
(instrumental hiphop):

yet another under the radar hiphop beat album with production that is simply unparalleled.  controller 7 samples some of the most obscure sounding records and flips them into a thing of beauty.

PD, i wasn't aware that exile produced blu's album.  if you're into those beats you owe it to yourself to check out the old emanon joints (PSI, acid nine ep, anon & on, steps through, the waiting room).  emanon is basically aloe blacc on exile's production, pure butter.  exile's been at it for a while, it's just that no one knows how dope he is -- hopefully blu is getting him some recognition.

lots of BBC radio broadcasts.  today i wrapped up The Spy Who Came in From the Cold.  Absolutely wonderful adaptation.

I've also been listening to a lot of smaller bands.  My most recent find is Hot Lava from Richmond, Va.  Absolutely wonderful.  Sadly I had to miss them last monday in DC because of other obligations, but I'm hoping that we can get them back up north.

I avoided Little Brother for a very long time, mainly because Phonte is an asshole. There's no doubt in my mind that the best of the underground hip hop movement is superior to the mainstream movement but I hate hearing people get all high n mighty over it. Plus while I agreed with him concerning the Lupe/Tribe fuck up I felt he was once again trying to be a pretentious ass.

Well anyway I got the album yesterday and on first listen I'm impressed. I certainly don't remember the last time I smiled and laughed so much while listening to a hip hop record. That same social commentary that annoyed me about Phonte's public persona are here but it's done in a funny yet intelligent way: this is like Bill Cosby rap, sexual assaults and all. There are a couple weak tracks here but overall the album is easy to listen to in full because of the underlining concept: it's basically a parody of the stereotypical modern urban radio station with skits featuring obnoxious DJs, quiet storm R&B vixens, and some hilarious callers. It really ties the album together well

9th Wonder is a great producer. The thing I really like about him is that while he's big on the soul sample movement he still uses hard ass drums and basslines that complement the beat - two things Kanye never learned. And of course, his vocal sampling is great

I should give this a spin. I listened to them on and off in the early 90s and have So Tough stowed away some place. Thanks for the tip!

As for me, I popped in some old high-school era Catherine Wheel and Belly at work today. Very nice way to end the day.
