Make sure to download eeeCTL, which lets you adjust the CPU speed (900mhz, yeah!) and fan settings.  There's a crapload of useful apps in this helpful forum post (http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=17291).

Glad I didn't install MS Office yet since Open Office takes up very little space and looks like it will work just fine.  There's even an app that makes the PC recognize SDHC cards as hard drives.  There's also several different ways to change the resolution to fullscreen 800x600 or go up to 1024x768.  I think eeeCTL will also let you easily disable the webcam, which should improve the battery life a bit.

Anyway, 2gb + 900mhz mode = Portable PC Gaming Awesomeness  :hyper

I wish Apple had made the Air a cheap computer like the EEE; it just makes so much more sense.  Solid State is fucking amazing though; I love that I can pick up the PC and move it around and do whatever while it's running with no fear of anything happening to it.  This thing is definitely going to end up going everywhere with me.  I had to fight the urge to take it to work this morning.  :lol

Plus being able to rotate the screen and mouse to a vertical orientation means MAME 2D shooter tate mode goodness.

I like that I was able to free up more HD space by dumping all the Windows Live stuff.  There seems to more than enough space for all the necessary apps and I still have like 1gb of free space remaining.

I tried running some movie files yesterday using the K-Lite standard codec pack and MPC.  Nice n' smooth, even off an external hard drive.  ROCK.  Next up is to try this stuff off the SDHC card...

does upping the CPU cause any further heat issues?

eeeCTL will show the PC temperature.  When I set it to 900mhz, it only went up by two degrees.  Not sure if this makes a difference or not, but when I put it to 900mhz, I usually turn the fan setting up too.  Is 100% too much?

Personally, I'm waiting for the msi wind myself, or to see what dell cooks up.  I like the bigger keyboard and 80 gig hd on the wind.  I will be getting some mini notebook for my "Triumph Goes Back To School" adventure this fall fo sho, tho.

Prole/lyte- what kind of battery life does the lil' eee get?

Whatever Dell is going to offer is going to be more expensive, and there are some questionable elements that have been announced (it has some sort of GPU?  Why would these things need a GPU?).  Dell is likely to offer SSD though, since they already do on laptops (though it is rather expensive).  MSI Wind has no SSD, so it's immediately off the candidate list.  I'm waiting until June for the EEE 901s, personally.  Dell also has no solid timeframe for an announcement.  According to what Michael Dell said, there'd be an announcement in May (I *think* he said mid May) so his time is running out.  By all accounts, Dell got caught with their pants down here, so I'm expecting it will take at least product lifecycle before they catch up.  Dell also doesn't do much R&D, so when it comes to assembling a brand new sort of product on their own, you have to take a wait and see approach.

What the fuck is so special about SSD?  Granted I don't think I would ever cram a bunch of shit on a sub-notebook, but having the option is nice.  And the Wind uses the Atom processor, which is pretty much universally held to be better than what the eee is using.

SSD is read from significantly faster than normal hard drives--fast enough that you will notice a perf increase.  It's also immune to typical hardrive damage, which frequently comes from drives being bumped around and what not.    The only downside is that it doesn't write as quickly as normal hard drives, but you will not notice this unless you are doing like real-time media editing.

And the Atom processor is a lot of hype.  And the 901 has one anyway.  Intel is good at hyping brand names.  Figures the communist is the one that falls for marketing.  Intel is trying to break into an emerging market in a processor bracket owned by ARM and AMD and someone else I forget (EDIT:  VIA), so they have to be slick about it.

TVC (or MAF or Prole), what about the keyboard on the 900?  I assume that's the one that Prole got, I hated the keyboard on the 700.  My hands aren't honkin' huge or anything, but is the damn keyboard at least a little bit bigger than the 700s?  Also, how's the battery life?

You'll have to ask Prole.  I'm waiting until June when the 901s are available.  And although I'm not expecting much impressive, I'm curious to see what Dell brings.  New product or no, they have stepped up their quality in the past year.

I may have to consider a 901, my birthday is in late June so I guess I could justify the purchase as a joint birthday present to myself/going back to school thing.  I hate spending money.

Also worth mentioning that Apple's WWDC is in early June.  Although things have been largely quite on the non iPhone-rumor front, word has been bubbling up about a larger iPhone/tablet/MID.  I know, it's a rumor and it's vague, and it's Apple so it will be pricey, but I'm curious.

What be you going to school for?

To take over the world, of course.  I can better advance the Socialist Agenda if I have a degree.

Kidding.  I've decided to go back and get my poli-sci degree.  I was shocked to see that most of my credits from way back when actually transferred, but I'm opting to take certain classes again because I've slaughtered a lot of brain cells in the interim.  We'll see how dumb I've gotten when I have to write my first paper.  I think I'm re-taking an entry level English course, poli-sci course and taking Spanish, Algebra and Communications my first semester back.

I wanted the 7 inch EEE because I wanted something this small.  9-10 inches is approaching normal size, and I have a MacBook for that.  The keyboard is a little too small, but you get used to it.  The touchpad is okay for it does; my complaint about is the left/right mouse button feels too stiff and should be a little easier to push on, but I suspect it will get that way with time.  The EEE comes with a mini-USB mouse, BTW.  The whole thing is so small that it wouldn't be a problem bringing the notebook, mouse, and AC with you anywhere.

And the big deal about solid state, for me at least, is that the computer boots up and runs FAST, it's quiet, and I'm not worried about the hard drive breaking down.  The notebook feels like it is made to be brought all over the place.  And you just can't beat that price.  If a better model comes out within a year, I'm not going to feel burned.  I'll just get another one.

Prole/lyte- what kind of battery life does the lil' eee get?

I believe it's about 3 hours and 20+ minutes or so, but I don't know if that figure is with everything on, since turning off the webcam, wi-fi, and some other features should make it last longer.

Maybe it's because I lug around 5-gallon paint buckets all day, but I think my regular old HP laptop is pretty light.  I guess it's six pounds or so, but I can manhandle that thing all over the place without noticing the weight.  I suppose size is the biggest factor for you guys when it comes to using these eeePC things?  The keyboard would be the biggest drawback for me.  I don't think I could type comfortably on anything smaller than a standard laptop keysize.

I'm pretty sure it's only slightly bigger, since the screen fills the lid this time.

here's the image:

Quote
Looking from above, with the 900 on the right, you can immediately see it is a little deeper than the 700. The difference is around 7mm. They exactly are the same width, and, at the highest point (where the hinge is), they are also identical. However, due to the speaker repositioning and a slightly thicker screen, the front edge of the 900 stands proud of the 701 by around 3mm

Hey, thanks.  It wasn't "broken" or anything, I just couldn't figure out how to get it back to the way it was before.  Basically the app lets you use any resolution setting for the EEE.  Came in handy for an external monitor but things got weird when I started messing with the DPI settings.

The company is called E-mobile. (emobile.jp) Monthly charge is 5800 yen (no cap), but they have cheaper plans with monthly bandwidth caps. Their area coverage is expanding very rapidly. I was in Hakone the past weekend and I was surprised by the number of areas with coverage (Yamanaka-ko, Ashino-ko etc.) http://emobile.jp/area/area.html

I'm really interested, but the coverage is limited in Ishikawa-Ken.  I see that my in-laws' tiny little town is getting coverage in September...only 2mpbs, but still that is amazing.  I'd totally get this if I wasn't going to be jobless in a few months.   :lol
