new cell phone, yay!
« on: May 19, 2008, 11:51:22 PM »
So I've had this old cell phone for a while.

It was old when I got it almost two years ago. I loved it, but it had been giving me hell for the past month or so and it finally just kicked the dust.

Because my daddy is so fuck awesome, he ordered me a new cell phone today!

I'm getting the LJ enV2 in maroon.

I really wanted something with a full keyboard. James's dad is extremely hard of hearing, so I think it will be easier if, when we're trying to tell him something and he doesn't get it after a couple of times, I can just whip out my phone and type the message in .5 seconds.

I'm excited. It should come in a few days. Yay!

I'm also getting a new TV as my graduation present. My dad wants it to be an HD or whatever since there's no point anymore in buying a new TV that isn't HD. I don't really care if it's lower quality, I just prefer a bigger screen. Any recommendations?

I knew you had bad taste, but come on. LG is one of the worst phone companies out there, right next to Motorola. The kind of shit LG is pulling is exactly what Motorola was doing when the general population didn't know better.

Verizon?  :-\

i'm so tempted to get this off of eBay, even though i swore off of Motos after my SLVR:

i'll probably get tired of the lack of MP3s playback, camera, bluetooth, internet, etc. in a few days, but the minimalist aspect of it is so sexy.

I was thinking of getting the Blackberry Bold, but then I realized how much shit I'd have to give up that the iPhone has me used to, so I've decided against it.

I've never had anything but good experiences with LG phones. Besides my 5200 being effed up right now--and it's an old model--the rest have been great. And my first phone was a Motorola and that thing probably still works.

Besides, the enV2 was really the only one in our price range with a full keyboard. My mom is due for an upgrade so we're actually getting it for her, and it's then being transferred to me because she still loves her crappy RAZR lol. (We're all on one plan: my mom, my dad, myself, and my brother.)

what's this "because my daddy is awesome" i thought you were an independent strong woman?

Not really. I'm living with my parents again, as of like 2 months ago (was living with my maternal grandparents before that, I moved in with them in 04). I drive their cars. I don't pay rent. I do dishes and laundry and run whatever errands they need me to. I cart my brother's ass around because he doesn't have a license yet. And my awesome dad and I go to lunch whenever we're both home in the afternoon.

It's really a nice setup, and it's ideal for me to stay here and save. Ecro has money put away for us to buy a house together, but I don't really have any savings, so I'd like to build up a cushion.

For what it's worth, I asked my mom if she wanted me to start paying rent and she said that would be crazy of me. So. :)

Verizon?  :-\

It has, without a doubt, the very best service around here. My parents have had a cell phone plan with them since like 1999.

For all you guys hating on LG, what cell companies are you loyal to?

None. You have to shop around when it comes to phones because all of them have the tendency to do things wrong in every phone. You have to get a phone based on what you want exactly.

Sony Ericsson, for instance, has the best screens for phones, period. They also happen to have really good cameras.
Nokia for the most part makes phones with very fast processors, but everything else is sort of barren.
Samsung is okay, but their design quality has been declining.
LG is absolute shit in pretty much every department, just like Motorola.

Really, the number one best way to find out if a phone is good for you is put it in your damn hands and play with it a good 30 minutes. Inspect every feature, know what you're looking for. Before getting my hands on one, I thought the iPhone was absurdly priced at 600 dollars. As soon as I had touched it, it wasn't a month before I dropped the full 600 on the 8GB I own now. After having to replace it four times, I still love the iPhone more than any phone I've come into the ownership of, and it's gonna be a hard time to let go, whenever that day comes along.

See the thing is, I don't care if it has the best screen or a good camera. I carry my digital camera with me everywhere I go, so I don't really use my cell to take pictures, and as long as I can see the screen it's good enough for me.

My brother has the first enV and I really like it. I was actually going to get that one, but they only had it in green or white. The green is like the forest green, which I wasn't fond of, and I didn't really care for the white. So I paid like 20 bucks more to get the enV2 in maroon.

Besides, I really wanted the full keyboard, and the *in* thing right now is slide phones, so full keyboards are harder to find.

I'd never buy an iPhone. It's just too expensive for my taste, no matter how much I like the touch screen. (If I could have, I would have gotten the LG Voyager instead--basically an enV with a touch screen on the outside.)

See, that's what I'm saying, just buy what you like. I was simply saying that LG makes really really really bad phones. But if you were restricted by cost and a full QWERTY was a big issue to you, then it makes all the sense in the world to have gotten the phone you did.

i hate on Verizon because of they rape their phones. They take out features that are standard and fill them with Verizon services to squeeze more money out of you. i'd hate to live in an area where they had the best coverage simply because of this. i've never used them but most of what i've read regarding call quality is positive. Frankly, i hope i never have to switch to a non-GSM provider. Slipping a SIM into an unlocked phone of my choice is quite nice for those of us that care about that sort of thing.

Regarding preferred brands, i find cells to be kinda fickle between models regardless of brand. Still, Sony-Ericsson and Nokia are easy, safe choices. They're the Canon/Nikon/Sony of the cell world IMO. You can buy a phone from them and generally be safe in terms of features and quality of pretty much everything. HTC would be my close third, they actually make a lot of the smartphones for carriers. Samsung would be contender with me if they had a phone i actually wanted. Their designs tend to be clunky and they haven't done anything in the smartphone space that's caught my eye, but their phones are overall solid and durable in my limited experience.

LG and Motorola are the only two brands off the top of my head that i'd stay away from. Very average overall, and Motos in general tend to have issues crop up after time, particularly with the RAZR/SLVR/ROKR/FCKR/etc. The only reason i'm seriously tempted to get the F3 (pictured above) after problems with my SLVR is that i can get it for ~$40. It seems to be pretty durable from reviews, but if it falls apart after a few months it's only forty bucks wasted.

I dunno how much money is saved by going smaller, and HDTV on smaller screens is such a waste. The 32 inch Samsung I have now goes for like 700-800 but then there's tax.

Still, if her dad can find one of the older CRT HDTV's he may be able to get something pretty big, literally haw haw :/

Haha I know. I told him I'd rather a bigger screen than a better TV, though. We'll see.

What is a CRT? The kind of TV with the big back part? I have one of those now. They honestly don't bother me.

For what it's worth, I hate the Motorola RAZR.

the RAZR is the worst phone i've ever owned.  ugh

and yeah, CRT's are the ones with the huge backs.  But they also have great black levels and picture qualities and they don't tend to really have native resolutions so scaling rocks in them and jaggies won't bother you too much because I know you'll be playing the sega on it and you'll be like "OH MY GOD" if it was an LCD or something.

My mom's RAZR freezes sometimes, and it has battery problems. I also can never really hear well on it, even when it's turned up all the way.

My new phone should come tomorrow, so I'm excited!

Wtf, that's supposed to be an awesome deal? You can get a 720p 42" Panasonic plasma for only $100 more at Sears right now.

I have a Razr also and it's a piece of shit.
