This has been "rumored" for a while. And it didn't exactly look shit hot when they demonstrated this stuff. Ubi really needs to fucking learn to perfect concepts and eliminate legacy issues, as opposed to just shove ambition at things. Ambition is admirable, but it's worth jack shit if the games are riddled with issues.

The question is if they are still going down the same path. The brunt of rumors have suggested that the whole concept was scrapped. Me, I'd really like a good sequel to Chaos Theory. Ambition and change for the sake of switching things up doesn't sit right with me, especially when Chaos Theory was as awesome as it was.

In a way, I'm kind of glad because a stealth system like AC's would be terrible in a Splinter Cell setting.

But I'd also like them to try something different.  Maybe a more realistic stealth game.

At least most of the tech is built up to a certain point so whatever revamping they need to do probably won't take too long.

I wish they would incorporate some hand to hand combat since Sam is supposed to be such a badass.

Something like that would make the series feel fresh again.

If they do decide to incorporate melee combat, I hope it'll be more exciting than the CQC system in MGS.

I'm sure a lot of the work like level design, art assets, AI/environment scripting, sound production, etc. can be used no matter what the changes made become. It's good to see that they are taking SC seriously enough to know when they might have a turd on their hands to keep the series' vibrant even into its fifth installment (which is really hard to do).

I do hope they continue forward with the more open ended ideas.  I wouldn't want something as wide open as Assassin's Creed, but a greater level of freedom combined with structured mission design would really improve the experience.  The other games were far too linear and basically relied on trial and error.  I would love to see that disappear.

 Ubisoft denies Conviction redesign

Quote

Ubisoft has dismissed rumours that Splinter Cell Conviction is heading back to the drawing board as speculation.

The publisher was responding to a report in Xbox World 360 magazine that claimed the game was being redesigned because it wasn't groundbreaking enough, and had even been outdated by Ubisoft titles such as Assassin's Creed.

The rumours suggested that Conviction would go back into development and be given a fresh release date of Christmas 2009 - or even spring 2010.

Not so, said Ubsioft, telling Eurogamer the report is "pure speculation".

Splinter Cell Conviction was revealed last year at the Paris-based publisher event UbiDays. The 2008 show takes place next week.

The fifth instalment in the sneaky Sam Fisher series does away with all the gadgets and casts you in a fugitive role where you will have to use your surroundings to survive: blend with crowds, throw tables at ice creams at people, that sort of thing.

It hasn't been seen for a while, now, but pop over to our Splinter Cell Conviction gamepage for all of the information to date.

"throw tables at ice creams at people"
???

table-->ice cream-->people
???

of course they're going to deny it, but these rumors have been going on for a while that I think there were at least some huge changes made.

Getting rid of Xbox exclusivity would probably push it back to about 2011...

Yes.  Chaos Theory was awesome.  I never got to beat it since my Xbox kind of died after I came overseas, but I still have the disc and have been meaning to go back and play it on the 360.

I couldn't get into Double Agent.  I didn't like where things went after the first mission.   :-\
