The "Join PC Gaming to Prevent Borys Am Suicide" Fund
« on: May 21, 2008, 03:02:20 AM »
Hey guys, I thought I'd made a thread here in the gaming forum where people can post PC specs and try to get help getting new parts to trick out their rig and keep in touch with the PC gaming front. I'll try to provide help, and I hope Borys will back this thread and this idea. The main reason I made this thread is because I'm going to go back on my word about buying a Mac this summer for upgrading my computer yet again, hopefully to the point of finally satiating me. Right now, this is my rig:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 (2.4GHzx4)
GPU: Radeon X1950PRO 256MB
RAM: 4GBs (4x1GB)

The main things I'm interested in upgrading is the GPU and I need a new case. I got a Cooler Master one now, and it's complete shit (I do not recommend this bullshit tool-less design, my mobo is sitting on a piece of foam cardboard and held up by the I/O frame), so I need a new case in the budget range. Not a fancy aesthetic person. I've done some browsing on newegg, but I haven't been convinced entirely by anything.

Feel free to post your own requests for help on anything regarding PC gaming, such as recommendations for PC games and such. I want this to be a PC games megathread, basically.

First, hold off for a month or two for your GPU upgrade - the next generation Nvidia and ATI cards are coming out end of May / early June.

Second, you still need to give a price range for your case. There are some killer cases out there (yes, they require tools) but you have to provide a ballpark figure.

And... what's wrong with tool-free cases, based on your experience?

(nice thread, though)

You're pretty much the PC king in this community. You're gonna be involved either way.

Well, I'm not planning on doing the GPU upgrade till summer, like late July or early August.

As far as the case, $150 and lower is good, I think. Not much more than that. I'm not bugged by using tools, not anymore at least.

The problem I had with Cooler Master tool-free is the fucking mobo standoffs wouldn't screw into the inside of the case, so my mobo is pretty much floating in the middle of my case now, because of that. If I ended up kicking it hard enough, the mobo could tap the interior and the static would short it out like bam. Maybe I just got a damaged case or something, but I'm not going Cooler Master again. I had an Antec before, and that thing was baller.

I also wanted to ask EB how Dark Messiah is. I'm really interested in it, the demo was awesome, how's the whole game?

I wouldn't mind some links to some deals on Hard Drives. It's the only major part I need, and a case (and fans, and power supply)

Then I'm all set to do some torrenting, baby

It was AWESOME but then it seems I am the only one who liked it.

IF you liked the demo (I LOVED IT) then the whole game will BLOW YOU THE FUCK AWAY. It's everything there was in demo only 10 times more intense.

The dungeons design is BRILLIANT, the graphics are BRILLIANT so are the PHYSICS but you know that already based on the demo.

:bow

I'm buying it.

Actually, I've been trying to play Dark Messiah lately.  The character models and environment are pretty dated now but overall the game still looks pretty good.

It's a pretty tough game.  Even in the early stages, I have to use proper strategy to win.  There simply aren't enough health potions lying around.

I'd like to play the PC version because the X360's achievements are garbage. I could use some help. Cause you guys are PC overlords. Dudes. Overlord dudes. Of the PC.

Never had a problem with the difficulty. You just have to:

a) plan things right
b) execute them PERFECTLY

If you fail then it's reload time.

Oh and NPCs and monster's graphics >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Oblivion's graphics.

Dark Messiah of M&M = fantasy Mirror's Edge :hyper

What's the best upgrading path?

I think it still looks great, dunno what's wrong with Smooth D:

The textures are so goddamn clean, and the HDR is so crisp you can taste it.

So for a video card, will the 9800GTX do? I don't wanna get a GX2 (lol $600), but those 9800s look pretty solid. I've been hearing mixed impressions, however.

What would you personally recommend? I mean even if the 9800 still isn't that much better than the 8800, doesn't the fact that's it's new hold any positive weight?

I know you're not asking me, but anyhow:

Wait one month. The new cards from the two major players are coming out.

That leaves you with two possibilities:
  • Pick up a card that will beat the best available today, or
  • Pick up a current card for a cheaper price

Edit: said pretty much the same thing a couple of posts up.  :dur

I thought you were referring to the 9800s. What are they gonna make, G10000s?
