Hillary cites RFK assassination in explaining why she's still in race

Hillary Clinton today cited the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy during the 1968 presidential campaign to explain why she was remaining in the race despite long odds.

"We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California," Clinton told the editorial board of a South Dakota newspaper. " I don't understand it," Clinton added, alluding to the calls for her to quit.

Clinton made the statement after pointing out that her husband didn't lock up the nomination until June of 1992, trying to point out that, by past history, it's not late in the campaign.

But Barack Obama received Secret Service protection one year ago this month, the earliest ever in presidential history, after reports of threats.

Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton said in a statement that “Senator Clinton's statement before the Argus Leader editorial board was unfortunate and has no place in this campaign."

Clinton's made the comment to the Argus Leader newspaper in Sioux Falls, S.D.

to be fair, her point is that the 68 primary process went into June. She's not saying that she's in the race just in case Obama gets killed. Her comments were in responses that the race has gone on too long, so she merely cited examples of primaries that continued into June.

Yeah, Goldwater lost to Nixon in '68.

And as a socialist, please don't try to associate filth like Hillary Clinton with my people.

Uh, NO.  She could have said "Well there have been lots of primaries that went long into the calendar like '68, '92" blah blah blah whatever.  She SPECIFICALLY CITED RFK's assassination.

It's not IMO that she said something inherently offensive, it's just the inherent cluelessness re: making references to assassination when commenting on someone who is likely to be the nation's first Black President.  This is a cluelessness that's apparently rampant in the halls of government nowadays...

Not even an accurate comparison.  She's bringing up years when the primaries started months later and California wasn't until June.

Plus I think she's fudging it with the '92 stuff.  Jerry Brown was effectively knocked out a lot earlier than that.

Exactly.  Plus it's almost 40 years to the DAY that RFK was shot.

Mandark- There was an AP article posted the other day where Bill was being referred to as the presumptive nominee in early April.  Plus Iowa wasn't until February in '92 and it basically didn't count because Harkin was running.  Also there was no 24 hour news cycle back then.  Of course imo the 24 hour news cycle is what's going to make all of this nonsense moot in a month or two, barring some insane elderly women soldiering on like Japanese airmen left on islands into the 50's.

I absolutely would not.  Remember that I voted for Nader with no problems in 2000 and 2004.  If the Democrat isn't to my liking they don't get my vote.

Do you plan on voting for Bob Barr in November, or will you cast your vote for McCain just to make sure the black guy doesn't get into the White House?

For me it begins and ends with Hillary's association with the DLC, the free trade lovin', big business favoring wing of the party.  Which makes her makeover into a "Champion of the Working Folk" just absolutely bullshit.

Also, she's a disgustingly negative harpy of a woman that shouldn't be near the oval office again for any reason, ever.

Most of the differences are differences of character, her platform is the essentially the same platform obama is running on, which was borrowed from edwards anyway. Ultimately being president isnt just about 'the issues', but how the person would adapt when their agenda doesnt cover something. Hillary, since going negative, has just been embarassing.

This is a pointless hypothetical, but what would a Hillary platform look like if her two main challengers had been Evan Bayh and Mark Warner instead of Obama and Edwards?

For all her talk the last couple months about being a fighter and a champion, she spent years actively building a centrist reputation.  Every Hillary The Senator profile story I can remember hit three points: she's cautious, she works with Republicans (especially on lifestyle issues), and she does a good job with constituent services.

Until she started getting hammered from the left, she was pretty content to be seen as the Democratic Al D'Amato.

Pretty much.  None of the main three were hugely liberal in the Senate, but Edwards was way out front on economic issues and Obama at least had a liberal record in the Illinois legislature.*  Hillary doesn't have anything like that.  She's always been associated with the centrist, neoliberal wing of the party.

I'd like to think that's just because she's had a blinkered view of what's achievable in American politics and in her heart of hearts she's a social democrat, but given a more reliably liberal option I'm not going to risk it.

*I think Obama doesn't talk too much about his record there because it would come across as too black: making police tape interrogations and record the race of people they pulled over, for instance.

Triumph:  Honestly, I think the Clintons are non-radical progressives who fought their political battles over a couple decades when the electorate was center-right and a Democratic candidate had to do certain things to overcome that handicap.  Talk tough on foreign policy, actively distance yourself from the unpopular parts of the Dem coalition (hippies and angry darkies), stay away from the culture wars and only attempt very incremental gains.

Things are shifting to the left now and they're slow to recognize it.  But at least they're not kicking and screaming like Joe Lieberman.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Of course maybe she's just spent so much time around the usual beltway power brokers that she just got comfortable with it and accepts corporatism as the natural state of things.  Maybe she really dislikes the activist wing of the Dems on the merits (like her recent quote about MoveOn disagreeing with her foreign policy).  I like the first version better, though.  I'm a romantic soul.
