So what sucked about GTA?
« on: May 24, 2008, 04:20:40 PM »
Still not sure what people don't like about it.  Is it the driving controls?  Or is it the relationships you need to keep up?

Does it really stink?

-The driving was lol.
-Too short.
-The friend mechanic was bullshit. A thumbs down for what? For almost being there on time but missed it by  SECONDS because the in-game clock is shit?
-Nothing to do other then find pigeons after the games was done.
-Everyone online only wants to play near the air port or the first area in the game.
-Multiple endings is an awful idea for games like this. Only one ending will probably be followed.
-Every GTA until now had fantastic soundtracks, that captured the time period. This one is fucking awful and I couldn't sand listening to any station for too long.
-The GPS system was broken.
-No mute in online.
-There was nothing that made me want to start a rampage. The cops seemed to have perfect aim.
-The shooting didn't feel right. It wasn't a good idea to run and shoot. I found myself wishing GTA would suddenly have SR style shooting.

Although techincally NOT bulletpoints this is very informative.  Thanks.

fuck the haters, I still love it. However, since this is a complain thread I will do my best to comply

- bash A to run
- no checkpoints for the really long missions
- too many chase missions
- too many missions in general. once again, cut the fat. 94 missions? games like this are too long
- dating mechanic was shallow and the friend stuff gets old after a while.

but still. I played the other 3D gta's for a couple of hours and then lost interest, but I played this one til the end.

-Driving takes forever to get used and even then...
-Shooting mechanics still aren't that great
-No stats to build up like in San Andreas
-People keep calling you all the time, like Otis in Dead Rising
-No bicycles
-If you've played other GTAs it feels very samey
-No airplanes like in San Andreas
-No turf wars like in San Andreas
-Story is almost exactly the same as other GTAs, except this time you're Russian
-Little variety in mission: Go here, shoot these guys, chase this car, then repeat
-Very little in the way of side-missions, which Saints Row had a ton of

Other than graphics, it feels like a step back from SA. I do like it though, but there's no way its the greatest game ever made.

  • No Ammu-Nation
  • No "vehicle initiated" side missions, like R3 Missions, random phonebooth missions, or Patriot Playground
  • Warm Coffee is more like "lukewarm coffee" - every girl in SA was more of a freak than this
  • Mission restarts do not act as "replay" (a la Saints Row), but rather leave you in your armor-less, depleted ammo from failing the mission state
  • Realistic driving and realistic ragdoll physics and bloodsmears on car = guilt when nailing pedestrians instead of stupid laughs
  • Odd imbalance of sophomoric jokes from GTA III-era games and crime-drama movie like story; it's taking itself much more seriously than before
  • Man, seriously, what is up with those trees?

-The missions aren't as fun as they used to be.
- Not enough variety.
- Friends/Girlfriends = tedious, boring, time-wasting activities.
- Characters don't have as much personality as the previous gtas thus the storyline is not as involving. Make 'em cartoony and stereotypical and larger than life again, it was way better.
- Roman is not funny. I don't think I liked any of the characters.

Despite all this I'm still trying to 100% it. I haven't started the pigeon hunt yet, but you know it's going to be boring-ass tedious  :(

-Mission design is creatively bankrupt save a few (the "track down the cell phone mission" is great). San Andreas had way more innovative missions than this, but at least there's no real dumb shit like flight school and trucking.
-No checkpoints
-Cool stuff in the world that has no missions attached to it (the jail, for one)
-Invincible targets during chases
-STOP CALLING ME, JACKASSES
-Shit ending

I still had fun  :-X

This annoys me too. There's no sense of exploration, because if you find something interesting there's nothing there. No hidden packages, no cool weapons, no crazy vehicles, no killing sprees.

I'm enjoying it much more now I don't have the shitty story missions to do. Assassinations & Police Computer missions are pretty cool.

The worst thing is the relationship stuff.  It's just plain annoying when you're on one end of the map to have someone call you to "hang out" and you have to hoof it over to the other side of the map in time.  You don't HAVE to pursue relationships, but they can be beneficial to you.

As for the game, sure it's flawed and (as we all know) insanely overhyped, but it IS a good game and it is worth checking out.  For all the annoying stuff listed, people aren't mentioning the improved on-foot controls/fighting, plus not losing all your weapons when you die, etc.

But EVERY GTA III game had this as well. You lose some cash; at least now you keep your weapons. I liked Vice City Stories allowing you to pay a bribe to get your weapons back.

"Bankrupt"? Really? I am finding the missions to be a lot less predictable and open to player decision for execution. Just adding cover-shooting leaves every mission with the possibility of going tactical (shoot from cover) or SHOCK AND AWE (grenades, sniper rifle from LOS). But even with the cellphone mission (McReary's 2nd mission, right?), I also enjoyed that I'd get missions on /my/ cellphone, or through my webmail account, and that there were some two-part missions.

Call a cab. Skip the ride. You're there faster than you could've driven it. Get out, and immediately hail the same cab.
Note: This is helpful on DRUNK missions, bigtime.

Yeah, the combat is so, so much better than before that I was tearing through the assassination missions or any of the police missions where you had to take out a gang. I just wish there was a little more variety to some of the missions...(favorites include the one in GTA:LCS where you drive the campaign truck around and blast propaganda at everyone). Wish there would have been more helicopter missions, those are super fun. DLC needs parachutes!

I'd like to see GTASA get a graphical overhaul one of these days.  A real one - I'm not talking about the PC mods out there.  Update the graphics to GTA4 quality, improve the gun fighting, hand to hand, and driving controls and you'd have one of the best games out there.

I would like to see this also.  Maybe not in the same San Andreas area, but several different cities where you can do what you want.  Europe would work.  Have the UK, France, and Germany or something like that.

and 1 on 1 hand to hand isn't bad, but when fighting others it becomes shit.  Driving really needs to get fixed as it was pretty bad in GTA4.

Another thing that I didn't like about GTAIV was that there were only a handful of buildings in the entire city that you could actually go inside. That was one of the things that I really liked about Crackdown [aside from the obvious, of course] and something that I really hoped that Rockstar would pick up on. Didn't happen, though.

Haven't completed it yet. But, two things stick out:

- The city is so big that I feel like most of it is a huge waste.
- The fact that you can't play songs off your Zune was a pretty big letdown.

Going back to GTA:SA is pretty hilarious after playing GTA IV. The physics are virtually non-existant. Same goes for lighting. I suppose the old GTA's are alright for playing on PSP or a laptop, though.

I think if you go back and actually count in Crackdown, you'll find that you're able to see the interior of many, many more buildings in GTA IV.

On the other hand, GTA IV is getting mucho credit for implementing completely open sandbox world in free mode with multiple players TWO YEARS after Crackdown did it, so have at.

That you SEE maybe, but how many can you actually go inside and walk around in? Plus, it was amazingly fun to scale that huge tower from the inside and there were several other towers and complexes that you had to fight through as well.

I don't know, Crackdown's world just felt so much more alive, but I suppose there a several reasons for that.

Ah, as Daffy Duck said, "Puh-ronoun trouble."
OK, so I'm understanding it this way:

Saints Row, awesome game that it is, deserves credit for having buildings you can enter without loading screens.
Saints Row, under-appreciated underdog that it is, does not have free-roam multiplayer on its main, story-mission map.

The truth is that Ammunation, the Car Sales Lot, and at least one more plate-glass place, was like that in GTA III. Vice City also had a "drive-in" Ammunation but this was dropped in subsequent games, making Ammunation the same "load lite" mechanic which the mall, safehouses, clubs, etc. used.

- No gangcar round up
- Car round ups, but you dont fucking unlock any unique vehicles
- No emergency services roundup that you can then order a tank from a container ship
- No tanks
- Helipcopter sucks, I want rockets
- No business takeover strand
- Should have had business takeover ala godfather dons edition
- Cars sucked and didnt look unique
- Only "special" car that only spawns in one place has an awesome dumpvalve, but there are no other unique spawns like this
- Cant tell what buildings you can enter
- Safehouses sucked
- No BP/DP/FP cars
- NO GARAGES
- HIDDEN PACKAGES ARE FUCKING PIDGEONS. This would be ok if that after shooting 10 you unlock something like GTA3, but fucking no, this is not realistic, you have to shoot 200 and unlock a military helicopter!
- Humour and dialogue wasnt funny
- Niko is a terrible main character, bordering on worse than CJ
- Should have just remade GTA3 with that engine
- Speaking of engines GTA4 seems like one massive tech demo for Euphoria
- Police radius thing sucks. I run into an alley and no-one sees me, duck behind a large bin so no cops can see me, they should search the alley then LEAVE. But no, magical x-ray vision allows them to start popping shots at me
- No unique fucking gangs!!
- City sucks, looks the same, should have been smaller
- GTA4 is the most single dissapointing game and im appalled at Rockstar for bribing off every review outlet

The general lack of unlockables is what really does it for me. Complete the Most Wanted list and what do you get? An achievement if you're on 360, and absolutely nothing if you're on PS3. Give me some armor at my safehouse or some shit, dammit.

Nailed it.

That last mission really threw all of the games careful narrative, and all the 'realistic' shit they force on you in gameplay, into the toilet.
