Burnout Paradise is shockingly awesome
« on: May 25, 2008, 12:41:57 AM »
I hated the demo, hated the lack of a retry option and the removal of crash mode.

Whilst I still hate the removal of crash mode, I really love this game. One thing I hated about the Road Rages in previous Burnouts is that they ended, now as long as I keep getting takedowns they keep going. Awesome :bow2 The only thing they could add to make it better is the awesome mutlipliers you got in Burnout 3 where 2/3/4/5x takedowns were a big deal. Now it's just "wow takedown frenzy..."

I've spent the most of my first 4 hours finding all the races and drive throughs. Somehow in that time I've got 270 odd barriers. The feeling of exploration is awesome, and the fact that there's always an event around (except in the stupid hillside area to the west) actually works.

Whatever mode that is where you bounce your car long the road in lieu of Crash mode is shit :piss2

Haven't tried it online though, but I imagine that's just as awesome. I feel a bit stupid now for writing this off and not playing it when it came out.

Where are you playing this on? 360 or PS3?

I've been meaning to pick up this game as well.  I was one the few people who actually enjoyed the demo.

Its fun for like... The first 3 or 4 hours. But ultimately the open world is more trouble than it's worth- You never get a sense of "mastering" a course and the "TURN HERE" signals are way too slow for 150 mph.

Playing on 360.

I do get that feeling that I'm not learning the city as I go, I had the same issue with GTA. I guess I'm still in that honeymoon period where most of the races are easy and you can get away with a few crashes. I know the harder Burning Laps in previous Burnouts shitted me off.

Some of the cars are cool, but after a few hours I just kind of felt like. What's the point? I miss Crash mode.

That's one thing that's annoying me - the cars handle different but I've only really used one car to do everything. I don't see myself going for the Elite licence, but for something that I expected to hate and have so far had a fun 4-5 hours I'm happy.

 :lol

Yeeeeeeah, that's 100% false. Maybe you never get a sense of mastering a route. So keep that blanket of yours to yourself.

You can't master a route that's always changing. For me, half the fun of a racing game is knowing a track backwards anf forwards and being able to exercise your skillz.

Actually you can kind master them. I didn't think so either until I started doing all of the road rules times. You actually learn the names of the main streets so the street signs are actually helpful during a race. I've been playing the game for almost 40 hours now and I'm not bored with it. I'm trying to get the Elite license now. Still haven't played online though. :(

I was just gonna say that. It's fun at first, but by the end of the week it'll be out of your machine and you'll never touch it again.

Pretty close to my experience - I'm about 40 races out from the Elite license now, great stuff.  I have spent a couple of nights online tho.  The seamlessness of the experience is pretty damn impressive, even to someone as jaded as me.  I tend to get kicked for dropping into games and taking 3-4 records in the first 5 minutes :P  People just can't handle me!

I hated the demo and thought this game was going to be ass.  Instead, it's turned out to be hella impressive.  I went back and tried to play a 'regular' BO recently, and it just couldn't hold my interest.  It's a shame.

Also, something CRAZY cool for those of us who got the PS3 one - Criterion is prepping an online site where you can upload your PS3 save (just pull it off the console using USB storage, and upload via computer).  Once it's uploaded, they show you a map with all your not-yet-found super jumps, events, drive-thrus, smashes, and billboards so you can track them down and 100% the game.  :bow

I remember reading the same thing on the official burnout website. I got the 360 version though.
