Justice League: The New Frontier was pretty good

That's the best animated superhero flick since Mask of the Phantasm.  And it does the best job of showing various members of the DC Universe unite against a foe larger any than one hero - which was my grievance with the animated television show (no threat really felt epic enough to warrant all the Justice League members).  It was pretty rad, plus it had blood and violence.  You even see Hal Jordan shoot someone in the face!  In the face!  I'd like to see DC attempt more standalone direct-to-DVD features that were as faithful to the source material (Superman: Red Son, anyone?).

Batman, as always, had the best line, though:

[to Martian Manhunter] "And one other thing, I'm not sure what you are or where you come from. But my instincts tell me you're to be trusted. Make no mistake, I have a $70,000 sliver of a radioactive meteor to stop the one from Metropolis. All I need for you is a penny for a book of matches."

I actually bought it on bluray.  I liked it that much.

I was pissed that they got new voice cast, but I think they did pretty good.

I have the Absolute edition. It could serve as a tombstone, so it's hard to recommend unless you have space and strong forearm grip, but man, is it gorgeous.

My problem with this movie:

No black superheroes.

Also, David Boreanaz isn't that great.

John Henry the superhero or John Henry aka the guy who beat some machine at basically being a slave?

i didn't like this adaptation, but then New Frontier is probably my favorite DCU book ever.

John Henry, in the book, is a black man who becomes a masked vigilante to take on white supremest in the south.  his birth, crusade and death serve as a thematic arc to counter the "aw shucks" nature of the portrayal of much of the silver age.  in the movie, this important story and character is relegated to two lines spoken by a white newscaster in a castrated rendition of a good speech which lays out issues with humanity and villainy beyond hyper intelligent talking gorillas.

but hey, whatever.  i did like the portrayal of wonder woman though.  it was kind of good to see that, even if once more, they did away with a bit of the darkness in her actions and tone.

she's a warrior ambassador, not a housewife.
