Yeah, that was really surprising and disgusting even for FOX news. They need to apologize.

I'll be glad when this election is over. The REPs are getting their asses handed to them and all the pundits can do is pull this kind of shit. All it does is feed the Kos Kiddies of the world. At least McCain is actually trying to politically outmaneuver Obama:

http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/05/28/obama-says-he-is-considering-iraq-trip/

Prolly the first mistake by Obama in the general election. I doubt there will be many more.

I fail to see how him taking a trip is a mistake, pretty much all candidates do that kind of thing after they've secured the nomination.  Obama should have gone months ago, but a crazed old lady was holding onto his leg and screaming something about MI & FL.  Now if he took Johnny Short Arms' suggestion and went with him like a young kid traveling with papa, now that would be a mistake.

But yeah, you know it's bad when the best outcome for you guys would be somehow winning the White House and hanging onto enough of a minority in the Senate to continue to filibuster.

I fail to see how him taking a trip is a mistake...

The mistake was to call it a political stunt and then come back to say that he's planning a trip. Isn't he supposed to be the candidate willing to reach across the aisle?

Dude still has never met with Petreaus (although his Iraq advisor has). My buddy who worked for Petreaus in Iraq the last several months told me Obama supporters are gonna be pretty upset about what he actually does in Iraq if elected.

Gah...getting too political. This ends my session in this thread.

With or without reaching across the aisle like John McCain, going to Iraq is a political stunt.  God these candidates suck.

Actually since people swallow this shit it's more like, God people suck.  But people have to swallow a lot of shit, so I'll go easy on them and attack the pandering stuntmen instead.

I'll agree that calling an Iraq visit a "stunt" is stupid. I'd love to see both Obama and McCain visit Iraq at the same time. And I also love the idea about them campaigning throughout the country together

I think the truth about Iraq is that there is no easy way to pull out of that zone. Its gonna cost us in one way or another, no matter who is president.

Obama's Presidency is going to be characterized by doing the same thing Clinton or McCain would do but continually lecturing you about why you're wrong to call him out on it.

I already know he'd do the same things Clinton does when it comes to an AGENDA. You haven't stumbled upon the great secret of the democratic party. He will not however constantly fuck up in the land of crazy hyperbole. Clinton has shown how she handles pressure long term, and its not gracefully.

I dont know why you have this beef against obama but at the same time claim he's the same as everyone else. Just hate everyone else then?! Are you clinging to your bible and guns or something?

He has no intention of completely withdrawing. It will be redefined. Those who are already scheduled to come home will. We'll go from 17 divisions to 5 divisions by the end of 2010 (50k -75k troops) in time for the midterms.

When Obama does use hyperbole, I'm sure he'll have a brilliant speech where he lectures us "like adults" on hyperbolic statements and how his grandmother once used unbalanced words and it shocked him so much and that's why you shouldn't call him out on it.

The ironic thing about Obama's rhetoric is that he says he'll reach across the aisle and listen to the other side. Yet, there's a very good possibility he'll be giftwrapped a fillibuster-proof Senate. Therefore, negating any need to do so.

Agreed, and in addition most of the Obama faithful are the same polarized "netroots" community who have never said a positive thing about a Republican in their short lives, and have been loudly criticizing Dems for weakening their ideological positions in alleged deference to the concerns of the other aisle, think it's treasonous to appear on Fox News, and spend an inordinate amount of time crucifying weak conservatives like say David Brooks.  And whose campaign slogan tries to tar one of the most "aisle crossing" Republicans as "John McSame."  It's just bizarro world nowadays.

Yeah, it's pretty awesome.

And I do agree with you on the whole Iraq thing- I don't think we'll be completely out of there for quite a while, but I trust Obama to draw troops down quicker than McCain, to say nothing of the whole "starting another war" thing.

what reason do you have to believe it will be much worse?  That may be the general consensus, but I don't really buy it.

In Vietnam there was one unified nationalist movement.  I think it was pretty well understood that in the absence of the US South Vietnam would fall.  Hence the rumors about Kissinger wanting a "decent interval" between America withdrawing and the inevitable Vietcong takeover.

Iraq has a bunch of different groups jockeying for power in several shifting areas of conflict.  It will take longer for a Leviathan to emerge, if one does at all.

So it will probably be worse than Vietnam when the US leaves and some people will blame every casualty on the withdrawal.  But before saying we should "finish what we've started" we should ask if we can finish it.

The US hasn't been able to control events in Iraq so far and the wider record of great powers imposing their will on faraway foreign populations hasn't been so great since, say, 1950.

In so far as keeping the oil flowing out of the region, yes.
