So I finally played Okami
« on: May 28, 2008, 11:59:01 PM »
So I was visiting home over the weekend and my older brother asked me if there were any more good games on Wii. I said I had heard that No More Heroes and Okami were good although Okami was apparently better on PS2; I left the PS2 back at my apartment so he decided to pick it up for Wii anyway. I was bleeding testosterone after I finished Contra IV on normal mode in a glorious eight-hour marathon, so I figured I'd play something more relaxing and put Okami in rather than the hyperviolent No More Heroes.

Earlier that day I watched as my brother sat through about forty minutes of introduction (MGS4 am cry) and decided to skip all that. My first impression was that this game looks fucking incredible; I know the Wii version is supposed to have some inferior paper filter effect or something like that, but that first area totally wowed me and although the remote's D-pad made for an awkwardly positioned camera I made full use of it. My second impression -- and one that continued to grow for the next three hours -- is that this Issun is fucking annoying, worse even than Navi in Ocarina of Time: "Hey Amaterasu, look at the SPHERE this bear is standing on; you've figured it out already, but doesn't it look exactly like the SPHERE in that PAINTING? I bet if you moved this into the ROOM with the SAPLING, something amazing will happen!" The game continues to insult my intelligence: five seconds and one hallway later, Issun again interrupts play and the camera pans BACK to the painting as if everything weren't obvious enough already. I used to babysit my little sister all the time and Blues Clues does the exact same thing as the host, Steve, says, "Hmm...I wonder what would happen if we put THIS over THERE!"; that's all well and good but I'm not five years old anymore.

Oh, and my third impression is just as bad but my contention is squarely with the system. I guess the waggle didn't turn me off too much since the combat was simple enough anyway, but then I started training with that old guy in his dojo and had to learn some technique where I waggle for four consecutive strikes. It took me about a half hour to finally pull that shit off; I couldn't find out why it wasn't working at first and eventually I just resigned myself to laying on the floor and randomly waggling until it finally worked (with no apparent difference in input).

Overall though I'm impressed with nothing but Okami's appearance; some of you told me that this is better than Wind Waker, but so far I think I like it less than even Twilight Princess. Does Okami get much better (I just learned to draw cherry bombs, btw) or did my own issues with the gameplay not bother the rest of you?

issun does kinda back off eventually, but that's like a third of the way through this 60-hour game.  if you want to keep playing, you're just going to have to get used the fact that most of this game is spent reading text.  and combat is really easy, but you don't have to power up your character if you want to try to get some challenge out of it.  don't know about the contols cause i played the ps2 version.

Crap game, only tards fool themselves. I mean it just goes on and on. You "finish" the game, and then it's like "oop not done yet, just kidding", and then it -finally- ends like some wtf Beatles song or something. Twilight Princess was crap too. BOTH SUCK

What can I say? I loved every minute of the game, but if you don't then there's not really that much I could say to persuade you to like it. It's a shame you're not feeling it, honestly. It was one of my favorite games of 2007.

I only played the PS2 version and the first 2/3 of the game are fantastic. The last 1/3 of the game really drags on though and it seems like they just keep adding more and more villains instead of fleshing out an actual story. Great game though and fantastic visual style.

I have a copy sitting on my shelf, unopened since launch. Was thinking about picking this up next after Suikoden 2. I'll be going from one of Himuro's favorite games ever to the game that originally got him banned on GAF. :lol

Shit game. The stupid bug solves all the puzzles for you, and every fight can be won by pressing random buttons.

Only notable for its visuals.

I LOVED the game. It is better than Zelda TWW and Zelda TP.

Too bad there won't be a sequel to this amazing game.

It also bombed on the Wii, I think. What a shame.

Did not live up to hype at all.  About the same level of shittiness overall as Zelda TP, Okami had shittier gameplay but at least it has some style and creativity.  Neither game touches Wind Waker.

Okami does have a cool cell shading effect, and beautiful art (which doesn't fully carry over to the detail level allowed by the PS2), but the pop in is a bitch and the canvas texture looks like ass.  I wanted to wash the dirt off of my TV screen the whole time I played it.  Issun, unskippable cutscenes, and it never felt like it would end.  I'm still amazed I bothered to beat it. :duh

Mayhaps your pool soul is banned over at GAF?

Who me? Hahah, nah. Lyte Edge drew me back in.

This is exactly what I was going to say, although I'd add that everything I've heard about the Wii waggle tard controls make my cringe.  I was in agreement with pretty much everyone else who played through the PS2 version at release in thinking that a Wii version would be a perfect fit, but like those people, I figured they would keep the same control scheme as the PS2 version, just making the celestial brush use the waggle.  Sadly, it appears they did not. :japancry

So it has the exact opposite problem that TP did? That's pretty funny.

I really liked Okami and it only helped strengthen my liking of Clover (RIP).  I still think God Hand is their finest work.

Of course. Great to see a fellow God Hand nut on these boards. Were you ever able to beat 8-4 on a KMS run on Hard? That's the one place I can't get past (when like 8 guys including Tiger Joe all converge on you).

that game wasn't clover, was it?

It was developed by Capcom, and ported to the ps2 by Clover. iirc.

Ugh, get some fucking taste please.  Clover was an awesome studio, and it doesn't matter if they shut down, since they are continuing as Platinum Games.   8)

get some fucking taste? the ones with taste love god hand. what else did clover make? A bunch of viewtiful joe sequels no one cared about? okami?

platinum games looks more interesting than anything they put out as clover. I can only hope mad world and bayonetta are better or just as good as god hand.

Of course. Great to see a fellow God Hand nut on these boards. Were you ever able to beat 8-4 on a KMS run on Hard? That's the one place I can't get past (when like 8 guys including Tiger Joe all converge on you).

I did everything possible in the NA release of God Hand.  I went totally nuts on it and consider it one of my favorite games ever and one of the few games that are perfect.  I still haven't completed everything on my import, but I don't have a way to play import PS2 games anymore.

How the heck did you get past that part on a hard KMS run? I've seen one YouTube video of someone do it, but he totally spammed the drunken twist move (while dodge canceling the massive lag between consecutive moves, of course). Even then, it's ridiculously difficult to get past 8-4, but it's really the only exploit that's actually game-breaking (which is a damned shame, because I also feel the game is otherwise perfect).

I don't remember exactly what I did to beat it (I haven't played it since early 2007 after I had been playing it for the months following its release), and while I don't mean to brag because I'm not the best video game player out there, but I was really good at God Hand.  Everything about it clicked for me and it all felt right.  In comparison to DMC4 or the NG2 demo I recently played, I kept wondering why they made choices they did or why some aspects couldn't be fixed, but God Hand was perfect.

but yeah, you do need to be really cheap at times to get past some parts.

My 360 died and is in the tender clutches of MS Japan right now, so I put this in. I'm really impressed with the graphics but:

(snip)
Earlier that day I watched as my brother sat through about forty minutes of introduction (MGS4 am cry) (snip)

...Oh, man. You aren't kidding. I was struggling to get through to a save point so I wouldn't have to watch it all again. I was seriously afraid that if I had to go through all that not only unskippable, but un-speed-up-able text a 2nd time, I'd probably never boot the game again. It's interminable.
