The Star Wars Movies
« on: May 29, 2008, 07:17:10 PM »
I just got all six from a friend. I have never seen a SW movie in my life (I never really got the chance), but I figure it's about time to catch up since my friend just offered to lend them to me.

Which order should I watch them in? Originals (4-6) then prequels (1-3) or vice versa?

Thanks! :D

Just watch the original films - the prequels suck.

Mace Windu sucked.

Return of the Jedi is worth a viewing alone for the Vader/Palpatine/Luke interaction and one of the best John Williams scores ever.  Cohen's order is essentially right.

Jedi also has the big space battle which is nice, intercut with midget/furry porn mashup.  It should be watched for a sense of closure, but the movie as a whole is awful.

Awful is a strong word.  I'd use words like underwhelming and disappointing, but there are far too many memorable scenes to label it as an awful movie.

just watch 4-6

play jedi power battles for the dreamcast (ps1 version sucked) to get most of episode 1.

Episode I is the only watchable prequel.  The other two get progressively worse until Episode III devolves into an incoherent, bloated mess that looks like a videogame cutscene.

It's hard to choose between episode 2-3 as the worst of the prequels, though in retrospect it's funny that the one about a trade dispute was the best.

And Lucas even set the bar low to begin with. :-\

Totally agree with this sentiment.

I figured I should take the prequels for the sake of completion.  What's another 30 gigs?

I really think that even beyond the fanboy knee-jerk condemnation of the prequels, they just shouldn't be watched.

The originals are much more enjoyable when there's a certain mystique about the history and the older characters.

Watch 4-6. Haters get out, RotJ was had the greatest space battles, Lando, and Luke/Vader showdown with Palpatine cackling evilly in the background.

If you really, REALLY just absolutely have to see more, then maybe watch the Prequels. Otherwise, just stick to the originals.

Hell, watch 'em all in the order of release. Just brace yourself for some ham-fisted acting from front to back. You're definitely going to have it worse, because you don't have nostalgia goggles to watch these through.

And don't get me wrong, I like me some Star Wars.

4-6 then 1-3 definitely.  Seeing Darth Vader being a cool bad dude in 4-6 and then seeing how an innocent boy got to be a cool bad dude in 1-3 is pretty central to the movies.

I love Star Wars, but I agree with muckhole - keep your expectations low and you'll have a better chance at enjoying them.

I like the prequels better than the originals (Empire doesn't count), because they have more elaborate sci-fi production design and more complicated (even if botched) story (I'll take even an incoherent cartoonish attempt at political/character drama over straight good vs. evil, especially when I can psychoanalyze it for what it's really saying about Lucas' marriage or whatever).  and what is so horrible about looking like a videogame cutscene?  CG backlash is trendy distinguished mentally-challenged nonsense, smh

I don't get what is bad about being about a trade dispute either.  In fact, if they really went into the economics of the trade dispute and provided detailed figures about lost revenue, balance of trade and so on, I would've liked it 100000x better.

my order/ratings are

Star Wars: 6/10
Empire: 8/10
Jedi: 4/10
Phantom: 7/10
Clones: 6/10
Sith: haven't seen, but 7/10 anyway

HOLY CRAP I LOVE YOU!  I used to play that game over and over and over again!  :starwars  :hump  Let's make dreamcast babies.  If you played Mars Matrix I'll take it up the pooper from you. :hyper

OP, watch the originals then buy an xbox or if you have a 360 play KOTOR (the original, not KOTOR II, stay far away from KOTOR II).  That's all you'll ever need.  :-*
