All the "build an HD HTPC!" articles I find are from like 2006, which probably means they are using HD to mean 720p. lol!

It's a bit old, but the cover story is on htpcs and is very detailed in regards to the hardware and software.  You can obviously use more current specs for the hardware portion, but it will give a good idea.
