I think my step mom bought me one for my birfday, which is coming up in a couple of weeks.  I know there are some decent games for it, but I have no clue what they are as I have been pretty much ignoring videogames for the past year or two.  I like rpgs and action shit, no lame pokeymans or japafaggery stylus shit plz.

So.  Yer DS games.  List them.

Hotel Dusk sucks ass. WHat the hell are you trying to do to him, dude? Torture him?

Good ds games:

Etrian Odyssey - dungeon crawlin', map makin', hardcore rpg fun
Phoenix Wright - decent adventure game series, it's an interesting court "sim" take on the adventure genre. scramble for clues to save your clients from impending doom.
Kirby Canvas Curse (if you can find it) - excellent platformer, one of the most unique on the system. You platform with the styles, and it's anything BUT gimmicky. You use the stylus to draw lines to keep Kirby from harms way. Best platformer in ages.
Elite Beat Agents - Rhythm game that's a blast to play
Shiren the Wanderer - I haven't played this, but a lot of folks say it's amazing. It's another ds dungeon crawler. Hard as balls apparently. Sounds like my type of thing.

Those should start you out well.

I'll admit Phoenix Wright isn't that great of an adventure game, but it's fun nevertheless.

I've heard really good stuff about Etrian Odyssey, but isn't it hard as balls to find and the sequel's about to come out?

Himu: It's nothing of the sort.  It's rampant homojapuality wrapped up in choose your own adventure book.  Terrible, terrible game.  Still better than Hotel Dusk.

EO is one the best games to come out in the past few years period.

It's really that good?  Well shit, I guess I'll go ahead and order it off of Amazon then, it's like $35-40 which is worth it if it's that good.

The sequel's about to come out yes, but the thing with EO is that it's not story based in the first place and the sequel looks like the same ol' thing, so I'm not even sure if it matters if you get the first one instead of the sequel.

I don't like pirating games or movies.  TV and music I don't have much in the way of scruples, tho.

Well, then just buy Etrian Odyssey 1 and 2. Those will last you for a long time.

And get Yoshi's Island DS.

And Final Fantasy IV

If you like RPG's and action, I highly recommend TWEWY.

If you just want pure action, get Ninja Gaiden DS. edit - no stylus shit? :\

Etrian Odyssey isn't for everyone. Way too time consuming in my opinion with too much grinding required and it's very easy to screw up your party. I sold it.

It's like Japtard Wizardry, except with a big dungeon that goes deeper and deeper

If you "fuck up" your party, you can dump them and make a new one or rest them and lose 10 levels while gaining all your skill points back to re-do your guys abilites

You also have to farm items, to sell at the shop, and when you have enough, new equipment is made for you to buy

It's like the addiction of WoW, minus the fee and loss of social life

That's the thing though. 10 levels is like 15 hours of gameplay.

Not really

Assume you have to rest *1* party member among your 5. You can just dive into a deep floor and grind there (notice I use the word Grind, which Triumph has popped a chub to just now), you'll easily rack those 10 levels back up.

The problem with loot is that it's all the same, don't expect rare weapons and armor to drop, all the stuff you get is for selling at the shops which make that new equipment

Unless that is the definition of loot, don't hurt me

Nitro appears to have liked Phoenix Wright, which is awful, especially if you have experience with even the most marginal pc adventure games.

Which reminds me. The PW trilogy is one of the best gaming experiences I've had, and as much as I love these 3 games, even I have to admit that it's not for everyone. They're text/courtroom ADV games.

It's not really RARE either, most of the unordinary items can only be earned by defeating an enemy a certain way

example-

Defeating Mandrakes nets you Vines

Killing Mandrakes (has to be final blow) with a Fire attack nets you Charcoal

But, it's still loot which clutters your bag and turns into money which turns into possible new equipment or items, so the addiction is still there, when you find yourself with a party of 5 Survivalists making constant back and forth trips to a chopping square to make some quick money, like some fucking Starcraft Zerg

Yeah, I regret not taking the time to understand EO or give it a fair shake. Now I am rushing through in hopes to play EO2 on release.

Get:

Etrian Odyssey 1 and 2, no exceptions.
Phoenix wright series is decent.
The World Ends With You is an Action/RPG from square, its good.
Megaman ZX is a decent Megaman Game with some new ideas, the second one is pure trash in comparison. Most people are burnt out on megaman I understand.
Get Front Mission DS if you like soul crushingly hard strat games.
Castlevania: Dawn Of Souls and Portrait Of Ruin are both good.
Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword is a bit easy but fun.
Advance Wars Days of ruin is everything good about AW in one game. It has online.
Contra 4 is contra.

Avoid:
Zelda Phantom Hourglass sucks.
Hotel Dusk, having beat the game its pretty much boring the whole way through.

Mega Man ZX is meh. Horrible backtracking and crap. There were some fun boss fights and levels but they're few and far between.

I felt it had a few things going for it

the parallels between the beginning level and megaman x1

megaman zero references, etc

the sequel forgot all these things and was a quick cash in

Front Mission DS is pretty good - SNES style aesthetic, tons of mech customization options (and it's not just "buy the best shit", you actually have to min-max your mechs to get the highest quality equipment while fitting in your weight limit), nice (although repetitive) music, reasonably long but not excessively so.
