Graphics took an obvious hit since the early videos but the game still looks like it's going to be great. My only wish is for a Mercanaries co-op. That would be sweet.

Like how they use/manipulate the 'camera' to add that extra power to your action (you can see it clearly in the various gifs). Going to be intense.

As I recall, one of the first interviews with the producer referenced Black Hawk Down and a constant hunt situation.

Ah, yeah... I played the DX10 demo of that, ran surprisingly well. Ok, so that's good news, I really want to experience this game in all its possible gory glory. It's always nice to see genuine masterpieces in the making.

Definitely looks cool, but everything shown so far is what we've already done in RE4: shoot down an oncoming truck, tangle with rabid dogs, snipe explosive barrels, fight a berserk chainsaw guy, etc. I just hope there are a ton of surprises since I don't see anything novel in the gameplay. I heard rumors that it would use a dodge mechanic similar to God Hand's, and while that sounds intriguing, I haven't seen anything to back it up.

Oh, and either Capcom is completely oblivious to the whole racial controversy (highly unlikely) or they're embracing it: "There's no humanity here" followed by "Welcome to Africa." Hot black female heroine works well though.

I thought RE4 actually did a surprisingly good job with the escort deal, at least in some missions. The one where you have to keep the monks away so that Ashley can tend to getting the bridge working, that was actually a pretty cool scene.

i only killed ashley once, after which i had to put down the game for a couple days: she was being carried away by the monks so i tried to shoot him in the leg...but i hit ashley in the face instead :'(

The escort aspect of RE4 was goddam brilliant. I hate escort missions as much as anyone, but it never felt like a horrible unfair chore in RE4. It was awesome.

This has got to be one of the hardest parts of the game for me. But damn I love it.

Same sentiments here as archie, PD, et al.: escort missions typically suck, but I thought it worked out great in RE4. They're careful not to throw too much shit at you whenever Ashley's tagging along; if they do, there's usually a dumpster nearby. The worst part is when you're in the room with the huge ball and chain you operate to bust open a wall. I remember running out of ammo in that room on multiple playthroughs.

After the zombies breach the ceiling above him and the tide becomes too heavy to turn back, Chris makes a break for it and hotfoots it outside, and starts touring the town to make his escape. "This environment is right at the start of the game," Takeuchi explains as Kawata plays, and is "about four times the size of the village at the start of Resident Evil 4". It's a mess of half-built walls and wonky picket-fences, tyre piles, skeletal buildings loosely cobbled out of planks and steel poles, filled out with market stalls, burnt out cars and the charred husks of buses. Everything is rust and decay, and even the clothes flapping on washing lines are muddy rags.

The draw distance is huge, though, and while the area appears enclosed (at least for the purposes of our demo, perhaps), Chris has lots of paths to choose. Kawata directs him up some ramps onto gangways, and Takeuchi points out that there will be more vertical gameplay. Chris can leap across gaps and hop back down to the ground with contextual action-button usage, ala Resident Evil 4, and the environment is partially destructible.

Door handles can be shot out of the decaying wood, stalls and walls are swept away by grenade explosions, and Chris can fire at oil drums lying around, which envelop anything nearby in flames. In the trailer, we're shown Chris sniping a barrel on a bridge in the distance to take out a group of enemies, and upending a truck that's charging towards him by doing something explosive to flip it onto its side.

His enemies aren't all raggedy zombies, though; the meanest one we're shown is a hooded executioner figure with a giant battleaxe, who follows the player relentlessly, swinging his massive weapon with impunity, sweeping away the environment and even his undead colleagues in his hunt for Chris. When Kawata flees indoors, the hooded monster smashes through a nearby wall, ruining his defence.

I see the other forum can't get past the control scheme. I'll admit that I was skeptical of it prior to playing RE4, but once I got into the control system it felt awesome. I don't know why people are so eager to make every damned game fit into the same mold, and to change something that actually works.

I agree. Of course, I have no problem with tank controls at all anyway. The only concession I can see is Capcom allowing you to execute some sort of attack (no standard attack) while running full sprint.

RE4 and RE5 are only barely in the "survival horror" category largely thanks to their still-slow pacing. Non-tank controls would turn it into a run-of-the-mill run-and-gun 3rd person shooter.

If anyone wants that, then they are unlikely to be a survival horror/RE fan and should instead play the multitude of other games that offer that type of gameplay.
