Planescape: Torment thread of bangin hussies
« on: June 01, 2008, 04:59:08 AM »
Wanted to started a thread with the game itself as a main topic :D

Been playing it, love it. I was kinda not feeling the macabre style that was going on at the beginning but then I left the mortuary. Now I feel its opened up somewhat.

I still can't really get into the D&D ruleset, having never played it in my life. Certain terminology is like what the fuck? I guess I'm going to have to study up or something. Other than that, the game is very fun (aside from fights going something like "MISS" "MISS" "MISS" "CRITICAL MISS" "6 Damage" "MISS"...)

Gonna keep playing later... on a side note I kinda lost interest in LOTR: Online :/

Oh and obligatory :bow PC Gaming :bow

I tried to reinstall the 2 CD version tonight; failed. I'll try again tomorrow. I'm tempted to GameTap just for this and BG2.

How are you playing it? and are you using the resolution mod?

Not really in tune with your likes an dislikes Synth but I think you'll appreciate the emphasis on dialogue and investigating instead of fighting (which I believe is what TVC stated in the other thread). It really is fantastic.

Definitely try to play it any way possible, I ended up torrenting it myself (and have the High Res mod installed but its dangerous because it will lock up the game when you try to access certain things like the World Map).

what I mean is ... when I tried to reinstall it from the 2CD torrent I grabbed, the installer threw a bunch of errors. anything you could tell me about the install you got (mine was 2 CD ISOs) and the install procedure you used would be helpful.

my actual discs are on a spindle in a box in a closet somewhere, at this point...

I also downloaded a 2 CD ISO of Planescape off a Torrent site (Demonoid). I just used Daemon Tools on the first CD and it installed perfectly (I mount the 2nd CD when I want to play the game). I'm currently on XP SP2 btw

WARNING IMPORTANT

Read this Blue. It's a comprehensive and deep AD&D rules FAQ "for every CRPG based on the 2nd Edition AD&D ruleset" such as:

Quote
Baldur's Gate                          Gateway to the Savage Frontier
Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn        Hillsfar
   Champions of Krynn                     Icewind Dale
Curse of the Azure Bonds               Menzoberranzen
Dark Queen of Krynn                    Planescape: Torment
Death Knights of Krynn                 Pool of Radiance
Descent to Undermountain               Pools of Darkness
Dungeon Hack                           Secret of the Silver Blades
Eye of the Beholder                    Treasures of the Savage Frontier
Eye of the Beholder 2                  Warriors of the Eternal Sun (Genesis)
   Eye of the Beholder 3

NOTE: that is a AD&D rules FAQ. So it explains THACO, spells, to hit modifiers, classes, attributes etc. without spoiling anything from those games.

Thanks Borys! I'll definitely have to read through that.

I was just about to install the 2 CD ISO torrent as well. I was going to actually burn the CDs. I'm on Vista though, not XP.

Daemon Tools should work for Vista. You may run into as far as the game goes, when it comes to compatability though. On the flipside, burning them to CDs isn't a bad idea... thats probably what I'll do later on.

Is Daemon Tools pretty much the same app as PowerISO? I was able to install, and the game started and everything, but when I tried to install the mod, it didn't work.

It is but

1) Its free

2) Its footprint is much smaller than PowerISO

When you install it, all you'll ever really see of it is some little icon on your toolbar which you can launch and mount ISOs. It also comes with some emulation for security measures used on modern PC games (this is if your going to go all out pirating shit).

I've never had issues with it at all. Its a great app and is one of the first things I install when I first setup my PC.

I was able to install, and the game started and everything, but when I tried to install the mod, it didn't work.

You need to install the Mod files in the root of the Planescape folder. The path should look like...

C:\Program Files\Black Isle\Planescape - Torment

You want to install it there. Then you'll get the CMD prompt and have it install at whatever res you want (x being the longer axis). It installed fine for me.

Well, PowerISO is free too. Right now, it seems like mIRC...

"Do you want to register?"

No.

"Ok, keep using this program."

Oh ok, for some reason I thought it was a retail product...probably ISOMagic I'm thinking of.

Oh and yeah, I stated it in the other thread but the default resolution is so tight that its hard to really get a feel for the gameworld (or atleast the town). There are some niggling issues, like the Inventory screen defaulting to the original res (just with giant black spaces around it) and the toolbar at the bottom of the screen being kind of small.

I actually decided to check this out the other day due to all the recommendations. I haven't made it out of the mortuary yet but so far I'm liking the atmosphere. And you guys were right, the writing is pretty good. So rarely do I ever laugh out loud from a game. Good stuff so far.

daemon tools worked a treat, thanks!

2CD version already has the necessary 1.1 patch

anyone playing should use Platter's 1.37:

I'm just using the High Res Mod myself

Also, if your experiencing extreme slowdown when spells are cast, turn down the your cards Hardware Acceleration 3 notches (so theres no more Direct Draw D3D Acceleration).

You get to this screen by Right Clicking Desktop > Propterties > Settings Tab > Advanced > Toubleshoot Tab > You should see the Hardware Acceleration slider in this area

The game is locking up on me at a particular point. Not sure if its just me but I can't for the life of me figure out why its doing it.

IIRC, some of this is fixed by the community patch, might try installing that.

I've been avoiding this since I'm a couple of hours in but I think I might have to do that. First I'm going to do a full clean uninstall though.

This game does not exist in the real world. That or its going to be a pain to find this game in some store.

So now I'm thinking about subscribing to Gametap. Do you guys know if I can inject my savefile into a gametap downloaded game? If not, I really don't want to restart so I buy the game Online (off some clearence site or Ebay)
