Anyone else got Mass Effect for the PC?
« on: June 01, 2008, 10:18:11 PM »
PC gamers, give Mass Effect a try if you haven't played it on the 360 yet.

ME seems to be a much better port than the Kotor games.  It looks fantastic and runs quite smoothly at 1920x1200 +2x AA w/maximum settings.

The loading and texture pop-in problems have mostly been alleviated on the PC.

Is there one if you're playing a guy?  I'll take some if so.

I hope not but I can see how that could be a possibility after 1 hr of play.  I'm a big Bioware fan (mostly because of the Baldur's Gate games) but I'm not really feeling ME yet.

The presentation is fantastic but the combat is clunky and the RPG elements feel tacked on.

Also, the tutorials are terrible.  I hate reading game manuals but I might have to do it to really know how to play this game.

You can probably get away without tutorials.  There isn't that much to the game once you know the controls.

I've been playing it, too.  Much better than the console version.  The squadmate AI is still godawful.  Runs like a dream now.  Looks great.  Still looks like poopy with the grain filter off.

it's strange, running this at 60 FPS somehow ruins the game's tempo, it doesn't feel as majestic

film grain + 60fps sounds weird, I can imagine it not working well

Don't worry, it gets better once you're able to start exploring the galaxy.

Sadly, demi is right, this is another subpar Bioware game.  At best it's on par with KOTOR.  Still better than Jade, but less polished than even that.

it's true, KOTOR 1 and 2 have like 4 times as much worthwhile content than ME

I don't think I'll ever stop being amused by PC's running console games at twice the framerate and twice the resolution.

<3 Mass Effect, though.

Here's how it sucks:

1.  Combat is lame.  You are the only useful member of your party.  Deal with it.  As a matter of fact, if there were a way to completely turn off your AI controlled partners, the game would probably be even easier

2.  The powers are lame.  There's not a lot of variety, and they don't even visually look cool.  Just keep hitting the shoot button, kiddo.

3.  Loot is lame.  But you probably already recognized this.

4.  Worst Bioware UI yet.  In a career of making wonky interfaces, this one takes the cake.  Note that it is a slight improvement over the console version, though.

5.  Short.  What's there is good, but what's there isn't that much.

6.  What the fuck were they thinking with planet exploration?  If they were going to be that half-assed, they should have just scrapped it completely.

What's good:

1.  Presentation, story, and VA.  Bioware seemingly can't mess these things up.

2.  The game is a fairly compelling play, despite its numerous flaws.

I disagree about combat and powers, but the rest is true enough.

And as you say, in spite of a massive heap of flaws, the game is strangely compelling. INCREDIBLY compelling, in my case.

TVC, why didn't you warn me earlier?

I would have gotten the game through "digital distribution" like Mundane.   :-\

I actually found a party combination that works fairly well. Have a tech and a biotic and set them to where they use their powers all the time. This usually creates enough of a diversion to pick off enemies, some of which will be paralyzed or flying through the air, with whatever weapon you like best.

It's a good game.  I thought everyone just knew that it was another watered-down Bioware game for the console re-res.  That's all they are allowed to make any more.

disagree about the powers - I'll never get tired of hitting Lift then Throw and watching some guy bounce around the room.

i agree about the use of powers - my AI team mates never seemed to use them properly

I really liked the atmosphere of this game and at first I was loving it a lot but after exploring the same looking planet over and over and over and over and over and... it really starts showing how shallow this game is (especially if you compare it to BioWare's other works). It bored me to the point where I stopped playing it but I do eventually want to finish it because there's still some aspects that I liked about it. Hopefully they'll improve on its faults with the inevitable sequel.

I have it, but I haven't played past halfway through the first planet. My weekend got gobbled up by the new Europa Universalis 3 expansion, which is incredible (if you are into spreadsheet gaming!). I hope to play more MEPC once I finish up my current EU3 game.

Im with demi here, there are better GAMES out there. Combats broken, half the classes are broken, world exploration is crap, dialogue tree options dont match what is actually said...

Its a decent enough 'space opera bald blue lady sim'.

This is in my post-GTA IV queue, given to me by a pal who was not enthralled with it. I'm excited to try an FPS/RPG hybrid, and the story missions sound fun. What's so bad about the side missions?

ME is one of those games that is either loved or hated; it really depends on how much you click with the engine. I couldnt stand the KOTOR games yet for some reasons I loved the crap out of ME and finished it a few times.

I rank it up there with Deus EX.
