Yeah, I'm gonna get the MGS4 pack, as MGS4 is the game I most want for the thing (and later, Little Big Planet and the FFXIII games).

First up, what games are good? Well, I like RPGs, Japanese-made games (except rhythm games), Nintendo games, and 2-D games... Usually, FPSes don't interest me that much and neither do American made games or military games. I also have a 360, so that leaves multiplat games out of the equation. Uncharted looked pretty decent but I hear it plays more like a really repetitive Gears of War than an adventure/platformer.

Some other questions:
-Is Wipeout out for the DLC?
-Are there any cool games I might like on the PS store?
-Can you download Japanese PS store games on a US system, since I hear Little Ralph and Gunners Heaven are available on the Japanese PS store.
-Is it region free for PS1 and PS2 games? I own a JP PS2 but it would be nice to disconnect this and have a PS3 as an all-in-one PS solution.
-How is the PS1 and PS2 emulation?
-Does its Blu-Ray have 720p upscaling now? I remember hearing that this was a problem with old versions of the PS3 firmware. I own a 720p TV and having a Blu-Ray drive would be nice.
-Does it have DVD upscaling?

Yes.  You will need a japanese psn account and you'll need to use a point card, that you can get on NCSX.

What region is your PS3? Is the Tiesto blu-ray disc region free?
If you have a PAL region PS3 you should have no problem playing PAL BDs.

As far as games on PSN are concerned, I initially went hog wild and bought a lot of stuff but I rarely re-visit any of them anymore outside of the occasional game of Everyday Shooter (which, imo is definitely worth it).  I was bored with SSHD within the first 5 minutes, letdown total.  Pixel Junk Monsters initially seemed great until I realized just how trial and error the game is (there's really only one way to complete a level) - you're better off with Tower Defense...and that's free.  Echochrome will put you to sleep, literally.  Thankfully there's a demo of it though.  Everything else on there is your typical XBLA fodder.  There just isn't enough content on PSN that's worth a damn.  Hell, there's just not enough content period.  It's a freakin' wasteland when compared to the 360.

The one area where I expected greatness - the PSOne games - has been a colossal disappointment.  I can't believe they're having this much trouble getting games out on their service.  Totally unexceptable, especially since MS has just started their Xbox Originals a little while back and they're already matching Sony in the number available, let alone beating them silly when it comes to quality (Ninja Gaiden Black, Dreamfall, Psychonauts, Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, Crimson Skies, etc.  vs   Wipeout, 2Xtreme, JetMoto, Cool Boarders, MediEvil, Warhawk, Twisted Metal 2, etc.).

PS2 emulation is great though.  I own a 80gig machine and have yet to run across any problems which is a godsend 'cause anymore I'm finding myself playing more PS2 games on my PS3 than anything else.

Well, I already have a NES, SNES, N64, GC, Wii, GBA SP, DSL, SMS, Genesis, Saturn, Dreamcast, Game Gear, Turbo Duo, PS1, PS2 (both US and JP), PSP, Xbox, 360, and PC... so PS3 is the next one to get. Well, that and SEGA-CD

Plus, I'm hoping the RPG situation improves somewhat, White Knight Story looks great, and of course there's FFXIII and who knows what else forthcoming, looks like RPG fans need to own all 3 systems and the 2 portables this gen.

ah the question of the triple. I came very close to buying one a while ago. Im so fucking glad I didnt. Basically the only games that interest me are MGS4 and Valkyrie of the Battlefield. All the big HD jrpgs are coming out on 360 and every other jrpg is coming out on Wii and DS. Little Big Planet looks like shit. Resistance 2 and Motorstorm 2 look fucking awful.

I might rent a triple so I can play MGS4. My video shop quoted the rental at $25 a day though :x the woman that sits next to me at work has one so I could try and borrow that or something.

The only thing I can tell you about buying and playing back movies is this: the PS3 is region locked.

Buyer beware! I thought (foolishly so) that region-free gaming meant all media was region free. So, when I bought my PS3 as a DVD player replacement (the upscaling is very good) I could only play Region 1 Blu-rays and Region 3 DVDs.

Just make sure whatever you get matches your PS3's region, or that the media is region free, and you'll be one happy camper.

Folklore is at least worth a look for someone with your tastes.  It's definitely one of the more interesting exclusive games on the PS3...but it's not really a RPG, at least not in the traditional sense.  It actually has a lot in common with Kameo minus the platforming bullshit.

yeah I was mainly excited about Valkyrie becuase its from the Skies of Arcadia Team, has cool looking stylised graphics and looks like it has a WWII like setting like in Ring of Red. Could be a sweet game.

But again, the game isnt even out yet. PS3

you should just stick to trying to get achievements in 360 jrpgs for more longevity

I was really planning on buying the MGS bundle when it came out, as I've been waiting for BC + rumble in the box.  But I just can't justify blowing my GWB pity check on it    I figured by now there would be a few system selling apps, but I'm not seeing it yet (and no MGS is not a system seller for me either).  Most of the decent games aren't even budget priced yet either.
I think the Valkyrie of the Battlefield game is the most interesting to me coming up.  But it's probably more my girl's kinda thing than mine.  But Skies of Arcadia
