last week, i was driving to work and was already about 20 minutes late before pulling in.  i wiped my hand on my dusty dashboard, covered my fingers, and make a small mark under my eye. (my car is filthy).  When i walked in my boss asked what happened, and i told him i had to get a jump.  he told me i had something under my eye, and i acted confused.  i brushed it of and asked him if i got it off.  i felt like ferris bueller

Be fucking honest about it, it happens to everyone.  Or tell them that your alarm clock broke. 

The last time this happened to me, I didn't hide anything: I told them I needed to buy a new clock, because I had gotten so used to the one I was using that I slept right through the alarm!     Now I use two different alarms (Cell phone and alarm clock) and no longer have this problem.

You never know if it's real, but then again, I don't really care.

Calling in sick isnt a good idea I think, because:

1. You usually have to do that on time too, before work starts
2. Youre letting your co-workers work more because you didnt show up. They wont like that. Better come in late, then not at all.

Depends on what industry you're in.  In an office environment, since everyone is pretty much responsible for their own thing, no one gives a shit.

If I'm late, no one usually gives a fuck since most people call me to tell me they'll be late.  But if there's something going on or I have to tell my Manager for whatever reason, I use my daughter.    failsafe.
