Forgive me if this observation is old news in the US, but this is really starting to remind me of Bush-Gore Indecision 2000. No-one can really 'win' at this point.

I don't think so.  I think the threats of Hillary supporters jumping ship to McCain or withholding their vote are a) overblown and b) irrelevant when the general election hits.  Yeah, she has around half of the popular vote in the primaries, but that's not taking the following into accounts:

1. Registered republicans that will vote for Obama (like me!)
2. Independents
3. Lazy kids that don't vote in primaries because they don't know what they are
4. America isn't that dumb
5. If we're that dumb, we deserve four more years of GOP leadership

It does.  You're a bit older than the target demographic, but a lot of young folks that just got that awesome ability to vote won't vote in primaries.  Especially in certain states.

I moved from a deep red state to a deep blue state, so I can continue not voting in style.

You know we should vote, regardless.  We need to knock up that popular vote count in case we get another hanging chad or whatever.  What if our two votes are the two votes that cost Obama the popular vote?!

No I dont think you quite understand who makes up most of Obama's current group of supporters, its those formerly lazy kids. Hillary has a crapload of them to. There's a reason for the high turn out. Its not a bunch of 30 something dems sprouting from the ground.

I recognize the higher than normal voter turnout amongst the youth for a primary, but it's still not the majority of youth voters or anything.  The base is definitely energized, but your average twenty-something probably did not vote in the primary.

There are roughly 75 million registered Democrats and a little over a third actually voted in the primary.  C'mon, don't be this argumentative.

1. Registered republicans that will vote for Obama (like me!)

I don't mean to single you out. But, as a registered Republican, could you rationalize your support for Obama given the fact that the Democrats will control both the House and Senate and have a very good shot at winning fillibuster-proof margins?

Obama would be a lot more appealing if Congress had some balance. But, there's no chance for me supporting him as it stands now.

i usually agree with Chris Matthews but why the fuck is he treating Hillary's "commanding 18mil supporters" like pledged delegates? "omg obama has to ask hillary for those voters or else he might not get them so he better give hillary wat she wants!"

He'll have no problem getting most of those voters - they don't belong to Hillary jeez

Furthermore, MAF, more than 22 million Democratic primary voters were over the age of 45 this year.  That accounts for the majority of the primary votes.  The youth is definitely surging, but a lot are still not voting.

siamesedreamer... Uh, it's pretty easy - I don't like McCain and the Republican leadership in Congress.  It was just a matter of whether or not I wanted to vote for a Democratic candidate.  I applaud Obama's willingness to actually pick platforms based on rationale and less on poll numbers.

Flame, I generally support the core values of the Republican party (not all of them), but I do not support a party cought up in a religious fervor, supporting the Iraq war and a Presidential nominee that lacks any kind of context with the modern world.

What do you support? The part of the party that you didnt mention is the smaller government lower taxes part. Is that what you support? If so then you might as well be voting for Nader in terms of Obama representing that.

- Lower taxes
- Small government
- No hand outs
- Social freedoms (stop banning smoking and other dumb shit)
- Guns!
- Closed borders

etc.
etc.

I really didn't know I had to spell that stuff out when I said CORE VALUES.

It really doesn't matter whether or not Obama is not in line with those values, because the Republican party's current set of values are not in line with my own.  More importantly, let's scorch Middle Eastern companies to line our pockets in the name of Jesus is not what I want to be doing for the next four years.

I never really had a problem with Flame, really.  I still don't.

And seriously, if a third-party candidate had a likely shot at winning in the general election, that I would sincerely look at that candidate.  But this is a two horse race and will likely be a lot closer than folks realize, especially when that Jesus-loving religious right wakes up tomorrow to see that BLACK MAN is actually running for President.  I don't want to waste a single vote and see McCain go into office, only to have flashbacks and nuke Iran in an episode.

No, it's not.

And social reforms are easier to correct or change than trying to figure out what to do with thousands of our troops stuck in a devastated country that was obliterated by yours truly, as we funnel money into the military-industrial complex for the sole benefit of mostly rich Republicans.

It's not a matter of punishing the party - it's a matter of saving the fucking country.
