Just got word that I didn't get a level design position :(

5 years of level design work in my spare time, and I've applied to level design positions three times now (guess third time isn't the charm after all?).  Still no love    I guess I'll keep plugging away.  The stress of not having free time for like half of the year every year is really starting to burn me out, though.  I'm 31 this year, the industry isn't known for hiring people in my age bracket for starting positions...  This looked like a really good fit for my experience, even the folks conducting the interview said so.  They were really candid about me having a good shot but warned me up front that they weren't 100% sure they would hire for the position.  Still smarts a bit.  I appreciate their candor though.

After careful consideration, the team has decided not hire an additional level designer at this time.  They were impressed with your interview, and would like to assure you that this decision is based solely on the team’s needs, and not a failing on your part.

They encourage you to reapply should another level design position open in the future.

I guess I'll take this weekend to finish re-installing my dev machine so I can start going at it again.  I have a TF2 map that's probably about half done, needs another 3-400 hours of work.  Hope those of you who know me in RL weren't planning on hanging out this summer.  :'(

At least you got a response, man. I've applied for a job at a few graphic design studios here, and I'm certainly qualified for the jobs, but I don't even receive negative responses. It's really fucking ignorant and bad form on their part. I'd start doubting myself, but I know where my resume and portfolio stands when compared to their professional output so that's not an issue, but that only makes it more aggravating. I don't know if there's something wrong with my resumé, if I'm applying for the wrong positions, or what it is.

I'm gainfully employed atm, so it's not imperative.  Might take up your offer for help if I'm ever doing a proper 'job hunt', though.

That blows. I love when they make you go through all the steps of the process just to bail on you at the last second. Happened to my gf twice in the last month.

I've got a couple of Warcraft III maps that I've published and a WIP TF2 CTF map.  Those are what I used as submissions, anyway.  Yeah, I was applying somewhere prestigious.  I'd rather not say where.

   I actually really enjoy level design, I'm looking forward to making it my career at some point.
