Want to spend a few days in Switzerland
« on: June 04, 2008, 06:22:53 PM »
Any advice from my fellow EB'ers?

More info: I will have a week after my classes are finished in Florence on June 13 and I want to do something memorable before I leave (another memorable thing actually). I thought a trip to Switzerland and the Alps would be pretty fucking cool and wondered if any EB'ers (cloudy/jarosh) had any ideas of a city to visit or multiple cities to visit... though I am more of a "stay in one place and really see it" type of person.

My only other idea is to do a 3 city trip in Italy. Genoa, then Turino, then Milano and back to Florence.

BTW, I will have to be back in Flr for my departure flight on June 20

definitely go to Switzerland. It's a beautiful country. I stayed a couple of days in Bern about 10 years ago. I don't remember much though except for how beautiful it was.

But it's going to be fucking crazy in Switzerland since Euro 08 is going on.

How do you like Florence? I was there for about 4 days in 2005. It's probably my favorite city ever.

I have heard from relatives that it is very expensive there compared to other places in Europe. So depending on where you're from and what you're doing in Switzerland maybe ensure you're nicely cashed up.

Hope you enjoy it - pretty stunning place as far as I know.

yeah it's going to be busy here because of the euro cup. it's probably going to be a little tough to get a hotel room in the bigger cities, especially the ones that are hosting the games, but you can still give it a shot. you might consider staying at a hotel in one of the outer-lying cities or smaller towns that are only a few minutes from the city by train.

it really depends what you want to see, though. in a week's time you can easily do a "big city" tour and an alps tour from pretty much any region of switzerland (german, french, italian). the city i obviously know best is zürich, since i live around here, but there are a lot of other great places to see too (bern is absolutely beautiful, and i haven't been there yet, but geneva is supposedly breathtaking). my mother swears by luzern -- it has a reputation for being gorgeous, and it's also pretty central and not far from the mountains. if you look around online you'll easily find a place to stay that suits you.

and yeah, it is pretty expensive here for tourists. what is going to hurt the most, probably, is the hotel. drinks are also really expensive so if you're looking to hit the bars, you'd better check your wallet first. you can eat pretty cheap as long as you don't go to a lot of sit down restaurants -- fast food, pizza, and delis aren't very expensive. authentic swiss food can be had all over the place and isn't usually too expensive.

oh yeah, and expect traffic to be maddening during the euro (they have signs up all over the place at the main station saying this). avoid taxis when you can anyway, they are expensive. opt for the train/bus/tram, public transportation is really nice here and it's easy to find your way around.

maybe jarosh will have something to add if he sees this thread. i've only been here for a year :o but it's an awesome country :swiss

Thanks all for the recommendations. Price isn't too much of a factor, it's not like Florence is all that cheap (Swiss use Euro right?). I was getting dissuaded from going due to the Euro cup but then all the photos that Jarosh posted made me want to go again. As for getting around, I don't mind 1/2 hour walks and imagine that I can walk most places within a city, then again the elevation may kill me. Plus the Euro cup being there only makes it more awesome right? right??

Gonna have to check out Zermatt if I go and I was planning on staying in Bern as my hub city, if I can find a place that is relatively cheap or a place nearby along a train stop that is cheap.

I like it here a lot, but I was just in Sienna yesterday and I think that may be the place to stay and just visit Florence for a few days. I liked Sienna so much because the buildings didn't try to cover up the stone and brick they were built with like they do in Florence, it had a more medieval feel to it. However as for things to see and do Florence is tops plus a lot of the Florentines (begrudgingly) speak English which is nice since my Italian is terrible. My favorite thing about Florence is that one can walk anywhere within the city itself. Sure, south of the Arno is a little far but not too bad. I will totally miss it when I leave.

PS: I am unsure as to whether I will ever be able to eat pizza in America ever again.

At least you have some small mountains nearby. The highest peaks around here are the turbans on Sikhs.

Yeah, I think the only place I went to south of the river was Michaelangelo's Piazza.

If you have a free day, you can take a 2-3 hour train ride from Florence to La Spezia. Then take a 20 minute train to Riomaggiore. You can walk through the Cinque Terre and check out each village. It's unbelievable.

How's Euro fever in Switzerland among the natives? I just read an article it's pretty lackluster in Austria (no football history, shitty team, next to no flags outside, hardly anyone buys any merchandise, recent scandals, introvert Austrians etc)

It was crazy here in Belgium and The Netherlands in the lead up to Euro 2000.
