I thought Blue Dragon was a by-the-numbers JRPG snorefest.  Same as the hundred games in it's genre before it.  I quit playing after about 6 hours with a strong urge to go and complete DQ8, which is the superior  Toriyama game.  I guess it could be fun if you haven't been following the genre.

FFXII shook things up a lot, introduced a lot of new concepts to the genre (although mostly copped from other genres) and had a setting that's really unparalleled.  That's why it trounced.

ffxii didn't really introduce any new concepts to the genre. we've had ai controlled characters since early phantasy star and early dq

USE A GUIDE FOR THE ITEMS AND MONSTERS or you are gonna flip also make a SPARE SAVE for the minigames

This game has probably the most time consuming and frustrating achievements

yep Ive got a print out guide for the missable items and what tricky monsters pop up and when. So I should be sweet as, Im using multiple saves so I should be all good... Im not looking forward to the minigame achievements :( But after trying to get Treasure Trove I feel like I can manage anything, at least you know where these achievements are and exactly how to get them

I guess I should asked this here:

Can someone tell me why I would like the game if I didn't like the demo? How long is it? Is there a lot of grinding?

This is a very shitty game IMO. The gameplay is so slow, and why does the camera always switch behind the enemy when you give the final blow?

I tried to like it, bu no. It sucks.

Lost Odyssey is awesome though.

It's good sized length, and no there is not a lot of grinding, you can casually breeze through, which is a negative, the game is pretty easy - if you want an actual challenge, get the Hard Mode patch asap

I've almost finished the game and I've quite enjoyed it.  It's very old school, but I think that's part of the charm.  Some of the towns are just so vibrant and I love the Toriyama art.

Game was awesome, albeit a bit easy, but I didn't know about the hard mode d/l before I started my game. Only real problem I had with the game was the screen tearing in some of the battles, and the first few hours were kinda slow. But once you get through the mural cave the game just keeps getting better and better. Not sure if I'd give the nod to this or Lost Odyssey, to tell you the truth... Mainly because I had a lot of problems with disc-read-errors in LO on the final disk. And because I liked the music in BD a lot more.

Eeew FFXII. FFXII was the most soulless RPG I've ever played. It wasn't that it was a horrible game, it was just that it seemed like nothing happened for 80 hours, and the gameplay was almost completely automatic, I hardly ever had to change my gambits around or manually input commands, apart from when I battled a few of the secret summons.

up to disc 3 now (and got every achievement on the way, and every missable item and monster  ;))

game keeps on getting better and better! Story is quite simple but I love all the throwbacks to older rpgs... and the characters are really likable. Still not as good as Lost Odyssey but still really really good

ummmm, huhuh. Really fucking time consuming and really easy to miss. Basically you need a guide to make sure you dont miss any items and monsters for the item/monster record achievements. And you need to make sure you use multiple saves, as there are mingames that pop up that only turn up once and you need to get perfect scores for those achivements. And most of the other ones involve getting everything to level 99, which involves lots of grinding. I hear a lot of people finish the game and end up with less than 50 points or so on it...

But with a guide it isnt too bad, I just read up on where everything is etc. and rotate your save slots and you'll be fine

Meh, I probably won't bother then. If they were specific  but quick I'd go for it.

You'd think they'd just come out with free DLC that encapsulated all the minigames into an option on the title screen, or something.

I played the intro for like 5 minutes and instant boner.

I got a permanent HP bonus for checking out the well, is shit like that really common? Should I use a guide so I don't ahev to keep jamming on A or just play normally?

to be honest I wouldnt bother with that shit, just play it. If you find something, cool but the stat boosts are always quite minimal. Im making sure I check out every corner of the dungeons for all the treasure and I always seem to be overleveled. Its an easy game

I was never able to get into this game. The beginning was too slow and I always seemed to be tired whenever I tried to play it. I'll try it again when I'm done with Lost Odyssey (currently on disc 3).

It's achievements seem like bullshit though.

I have yet to pick up an rpg for the 360 but that honor will most likely go to Lost Odyssey this summer, just seems more appealing. I've played the BD demo and couldn't get over the terrible soundtrack. I heard that the demo's not representative of the final game but still. I also liked the look DQ VIII had more, a game I put 90 hours in, probably my favorite rpg

A lot of people say the BD demo is crap compared to the full game, but I'm not sure the full game addresses my problems:

- unfortunately the protagonist's voice instantly put me off;
- the level design seemed really boring - like paths drawn out on a dead flat table.

I'm not particularly enthralled by the character design but that's not a deal breaker.  I thought the battle system was inventive.  Overall I wanted to like it but was turned off very quickly.

Blue Dragon is probably one of my favorite RPGs.  It scratched my nostalgia itch while at the same time giving me a new game to play.  It was like playing an old Final Fantasy game for the first time, a pleasure we will never know again.  And it was also a bit DQ-y, particularly towards the end what with the side quests and all.

I finally had a chance to play some more, game rules.

Is there any way to gain new skill slots besides the Generalist class? Does that class level up quickly? It'd be lame if you were forced to grind a separate class just to get full use out of your primary class.

I'm sure glad I did Hard mode. I've been killing lots of extra enemies (not quite grinding) yet this first boss kills all my guys in one hit and restores more health by defending than I can do to him in a single turn.

Oh cool, and when he does mow down it wipes out my entire party. I guess I'll play FF9, I'm not redoing 2.5 hours of gameplay on piss easy mode.

Because I was told that normal was a joke and I don't feel compelled to build characters and experiment with classes if I can dominate the game anyway. Supposedly hard was just a normal difficulty, though demi hasn't even tried it. There's an Impossible difficulty above it, too.

The normal battles are still shit easy, but I went ahead and fought them extra just in case. Then you come to a boss that kills you in one hit unless you grind more. It's not like I have a myriad of abilities and items to experiment with, and he can wipe out my party using one move.

I shouldn't have expected balance from a 1200kb download I guess.

I have 2:45 on the clock, I could probably rush back to this point in a little over an hour if I wasn't doing extra battles and poking around at rocks, maybe I'll start over in a week.

Which part of 'grinding is boring to me' don't you get?

I breezed through LO. Outside of the first two bosses LO is a joke, and those bosses don't require grinding. You haven't even tried BD hard mode.
